No speed bonus, but 1pt for answering the first 8, usually a sign of genuine knowledge of the subject. 1,2,3,4 correct for 1pt each; 5,6,7 top answers for 2pts each 8 Would be a top answer but for the fact that the question asked for a 'victim' - so the answer would of course be Deagol. :D 1.5pts Leader: Dunplaying 12.5pts

15. Legolas....? Glorfindel....? (Funny, I was sure that in the Chapter "Many Meetings" that it was Elrond who controlled the river and made it flood though...... ::) ???) Deceptive question as Glorfindel (the Elf Lord who lent his horse to Frodo) was present and along with Gandalf Aragorn and others of the fellowship helped when the flood arrived by scaring the Ringwraiths horses into throwing the remaining Ringwraiths into the water to be swept away but the real saviour was Elrond as he commanded the river to flood however it is not made clear (1961 edition) whether he was present or that the river was permanently enchanted by him (which I think is the answer I read elsewhere) or whether he commanded it at that time from a distance. So Glorfindel helped Frodo reach the Ford and then helped to 'temporarily' get rid of the Ringwraiths but it was the flood created by Elrond that really saved him. Pity I didn't see this quiz before 8-) edit error

24. The West is usually used but think there is a more precise answer which maybe Elvenhome or Valinor and an 'Old language' word I cannot remember.

Glorfindel the Elf-king was the name I was looking for. Warrior and Sparky have both given credible accounts of the events at the Ford of Bruinnen and each get 1.5pts - doubled. At the beginning of the War of the Ring, Frodo Baggins was carried on Glorfindel's horse towards the Ford of Bruinen, with the Ringwraiths in hot pursuit. It was at the ford Frodo, poisoned by a deadly wound, made his stand, and defied the Witch-king of Angmar. This lured the Ringwraiths into the Bruinen, and Elrond and Gandalf the Grey released a great flood, which took the form of horses made out of water due to Gandalf's magic. This flood killed the horses of the Ringwraiths. The part that always caught my imagination was the 'horses made out of water' and as Sparky mentioned the horses of the Ringwraiths, that earns a further 0.5pt - doubled. 24. The West is usually used but think there is a more precise answer which maybe Elvenhome or Valinor and an 'Old language' word I cannot remember. You're right that there is a more precise answer which will earn the points. ;) Leaderboard: 1 BB Warrior 36pts 2 Chunky Monkey 14pts 3 Dunplaying 12.5pts 4 Sparky 4pts 5 DaveJones 3pts

Unfortunately the story has been rewritten over time so can only give the account according to my 1961 edition and fully understand that another book/film could give another version 8-) (Gandalf explaining what happened at the Ford to Frodo when he awoke in the House of Elrond)....... 'The riders were too swift to overtake, and too many to oppose. On foot even Glorfindel and Aragorn together could not withstand all the Nine at once. When the Ringwraiths swept by, your friends ran up behind. Close to the Ford there is a small hollow beside the road masked by a few stunted trees. There they hastily kindled fire; for Glorfindel knew that a flood would come down, if the Riders tried to cross, and then he would have to deal with any that were left on his side of the river. The moment the flood appeared, he rushed out, followed by Aragorn and the others with flaming brands. Caught between fire and water, and seeing an Elf-lord revealed in his wrath, they were dismayed, and their horses were stricken with madness. Three were carried away by the first assault of the flood; (tempted into the water by Frodo's stand gs) the others were now hurled into the water by their horses and overwhelmed' (then after paragraph explaining that only the horses were actually destroyed) 'Who made the flood?' asked Frodo. 'Elrond commanded it,' answered Gandalf. 'The river of this valley is under great power, and it will rise in anger when he has great need to bar the Ford. As soon as the captain of the Ringwraiths rode into the water the flood was released. If I may say so, I added a few touches of my own; you may not have noticed, but some of the waves took the form of great white horses with shining white riders; and there were many rolling and grinding boulders. So although Elrond was actually responsible for saving Frodo, it was Glorfindel who was 'there' to give some assistance .........I repeat a deceptive question to answer even after swotting up :-* Thanks Tommo great quiz subject :D but can easily get really really tough (too tough) :'( would have to re-read all my Tolkien books again :-/

Interesting how Gandalf takes part of the credit for the event. "History" written by the winners. ;D
It's certainly a fertile subject, as is also the case with Harry Potter, that other great example of modern-day mythology.
Quiz remains open for Q24 in case anyone else comes into this late. ;)

24. Tol Eressea - (the Lonely Island with it's harbour city of Avallone and only allowed access to some by way of the Straight Road (Way). Well, I have as the answer here the seaport "Grey Havens" (aka Mithlond). tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Grey_HavensBut research on the earliest book version reveals "With the end of the First Age, many of the exiled Eldar of Middle-earth (and Teleri that had never left it) went to Aman, and lived in the island of Tol Eressëa" so I will allow the max. 2pts (doubled) for a full description. Final result: 1 BB Warrior 36pts 2 Chunky Monkey 14pts 3 Dunplaying 12.5pts 4 Sparky 8pts 5 DaveJones 3pts

Quote Following the defeat of Sauron and the crowning of King Aragorn Elessar, Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel left Middle-earth for Valinor from the Grey Havens. They were accompanied by Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, who were given the honor of taking the Straight Road because they had both been a Ring-bearer. Years later, Fairbairn family tradition held that Sam Gamgee also sailed West from the Grey Havens because he too had been a Ring-bearer, even if just briefly End quote.
Your excellent link actually gives the answer in that The Grey Havens (The Havens) was the harbour from which they departed Middle Earth for Valinor (the destination and part of my first answer), although I seemed to remember (not checked) that Valinor was no longer accessible itself and couldn't remember the Elvish name of the Island of 'Tol Eressea' (aka Elfhome/Elvenhome) which was the closest place to Valinor and only allowed to Elves and very few honoured 'guests'. At the end of my 1961 edition it simply says "And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed on into the West (also part of my first answer)," so the other memories and answers come from other books. 8-)
Thanks again Tommo as that is one difficult topic for a quizmeister (or quizster) with all the contradictory and confusing information available, and makes me realise too how little I remember now from years ago and how much more there is to know than I ever read in the first place :-/

Thanks again Tommo as that is one difficult topic for a quizmeister (or quizster) with all the contradictory and confusing information available, and makes me realise too how little I remember now from years ago and how much more there is to know than I ever read in the first place :-/ Point taken, and an example of the difficulties can be found in Thomas Hardy's The Wellbeloved where he became obliged to write an alternative and contrasting ending when the first one he chose didn't go down well with the public ! ;D
