The pairs tournament will again be in Bournemouth next March. You have just missed this year's event by 4 weeks. Eight tables are shipped in for the weekend.

Welcome to the forum Siv.
I am sure someone from the area on here, can point you in the direction of a local pub/club that you can get a game at, are you looking for regular billiards or is this for a holiday?

Hi Siv
I am not sure if there are any places in Bournemouth with a bar billiards table.
Re Mermaid Tourney entries are closed but advise you to come down if you can, the very best players in the country will be there and you would certainly learn a thing or two! You can send MID (Mary Daniels) a message if you like on this forum for details of the Mermaid and ask about a reserve list.
Failing that there are lots of other tournaments through the year, the Sussex Open in June being the next one or if you are really keen the World Champs in Jersey in November.
Hope to see you at a tournament soon!

It has bemused me why there seem to be no tables in the Dorset and/or New Forest area. I think you have to go far a way north, to Pewsey, for the nearest. Unless you fancy a trip across the waves to the Isle of Wight, where there is a table in the Duke of York, West Cowes (or there was when I last visited two years ago).

Well I live and learn ! And it's good news for siv. Someone has kindly provided a link where you can key in the words bar billiards as a search and find mention not only of one's own table but also others you never realised existed : www.beerintheevening.comA quick trawl through reveals the following which should be just the job for you : 1. The New Inn, Upwey (near Weymouth). 2. The Railway Hotel, Blandford Forum. 3. The Woolpack, Sopley (near Christchurch). Hope this helps. :)

excellent work there tommo....
BUT....
none of the pubs mentioned currently have tables
with excited fingers I clicked the link to the site... researched phone number ad had a succession of phone calls that all led to the same answer... no more table!!!
Can it really be that there are no tables left between Southampton and Weymouth?
Really a single one in Bournemouth is all we need....
good work so far guys...
considering contacting teh local press :)

I can hardly believe this one. It's in a picturesque little village nestling in the hills above Weymouth. www.echoeat.co.uk/index.cfm?id=457We've had several excursions to Sutton Poyntz whilst on holiday, investigating locations mentioned in Thomas Hardy novels. This one is referenced as the location for the mill in The Trumpet Major. I've walked past the pub several times but it never once occured to me that there might be bar billiards inside. :o :o :o postscript.................above link no longer working, site appears to have been removed. Pub mentioned was the Springhead at Sutton Poyntz. Very unlikely that there is still a bar billiards table there. -tommo 07/10/2010.

Welcome Nick, The only mention I can find of bar billiards anywhere near to Bournemouth is of the Branksome Railway Hotel (- although each February a huge tournament is staged at the Queens Hotel Bournemouth the tables are removed afterwards): www.beerguide.co.uk/old/towns/parkstone.htmIt's in the Branksome area of Poole - next town along the Dorset coast. The article suggests a bar billiards room of its own - but there's no clue of when the article was posted, and of course things can change with time. ......as with this one: I've deleted the Angel in Poole as I had a very disgruntled Geoff Powell and Pete Soanes verbally attack me in Bournemouth after they made a special trip to Poole to play there ;D ;D The table was removed last year and in fact Geoff sent me a picture of where it used to be!! cheers Tony

Hi there No BB table in the New Inn in Upwey, Dorset when I was down there last week. It's also an appalling dive. I also couldn't find one in the Nothe Tavern in Weymouth when I went there. I guess they got rid of it when they went very foodie. OB Thanks for that, Dorset is one of my favourite places to visit and yet I've never managed to fit in an investigation on those particular two. I'm sure I've been to the Railway in Blandford too - before there was ever a claim that it had bar billiards. Bet there's not one there either !

Top post ! Often pass that way (minor route connecting Ringwood with Shaftesbury) on the way to visiting relatives in Yeovil.
Now we have a good excuse for a stop off.

Whilst de-touring through four other counties (Hants, Wilts, Dorset, Somerset) on the way back from the IOW on Tuesday, we dropped in on the Grove Arms (Nr Shaftesbury)............ ......and had a lunchtime bite to eat (have lodged a report on TripAdviser): www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1137952-d1135384-Reviews-The_Grove_Arms-Ludwell_Wiltshire_England.htmlNo bar billiards, just a pool table where it once was. New owners Gary and Daff were having a prowl around in readiness to take over the next day, and were very chatty - as was Chef Nigel who is acquainted with bar billiards from a previous employ in Berkshire - so who knows for the future ? We had also intended to visit the Antelope on the map, but it does not open till late afternoon / early evening and we had to collect our doggie from his holiday hotel (Mick Johnson)
