Discussion on another thread has prompted this one. Name any spectacular performances by Ladies in Open Competitions that you can recall. I'll start it off.
2006 World Championships - Last 16 finish: Sue Atkins. 2006 Kent Classic - Quarter-finalist : Jean Over.

One more, and this is about the limit of my knowledge on the subject.
British Open Pairs 2005 : Queens Hotel Plate:- Runner up(with A.Brackenridge): Jean Over
I'm sure there are others, certainly Viv Shepherd (Wright) achieved on a National level. Perhaps Mr Farrelly would care to delve into his archives ?

Viv Sheperd (Wright) not only won the AEBBA ladies goodness knows how many times but also won the AEBBA pairs. Jan Taylor has also been runner up in the AEBBA pairs under her maiden name of Powell (198?)

1995 Dr Martens(Nthnts)Open – Plate Winner : Gail Woods Referring back to this one a minute, I'm fairly sure the runner-up was a lady. The AEBBA website has it down as S.Leach (Sue maybe ?). I recall it as I was there with my mate Micky Wright who was all smiles as he had reached the Plate Semi-Final along with THREE ladies. And he was gutted when he had his ass whipped and Gail won it. ;D 8-)

Jan Taylor was a semi finalist in the Kent Classic one year I believe - I think that is the best effort in an individual tournament.
And (I know it is not an open) but Viv Wright and Pauline Withey have both been part of winning teams in the National Pub Team Championship.

This very worthy thread (even if I say so myself ;D ) is being bumped, courtesy of the following e-Mail I have received from Simon Tinto :
Hello Clive.
I noticed you've started a thread on the BB website about Ladies who've done well in Opens. You might like to add the following.
The great Vivien Wright, who won 10 All England Ladies Singles titles, became the first Lady to reach the BIOC quarter-finals sometime in the mid-1980s.
In 1991 Sue Banting (now Mariner) also reached the quarter-finals where she lost to yours truly. In 1994, having won the Redhill Open Singles title (the first Lady to do so) she represented Surrey in the All England Singles and only missed the final itself by a single point.
Simon.
(It should be added that when All England Singles is mentioned, this was a lady taking part in what primarily was a men's competition, an unprecedented event.)

I could add a number of examples of memorable performances by ladies at an open (particularly Jersey!!) - but none of them have anything to do with Billiards. Does that help at all?!!!!

'Twas 2002, Heather - see second post down on this thread.
Susie was telling me how she and Steve had a miniature working bar billiards table which they donated to be made into the Plate Trophy. She was then dismayed to be the first recipient of the very item which she had been dusting for the last ten years ! :o ;D
