For those that don't know, this match is always played six a side, with only one leg per game. A coin toss AFTER the draw has been made, giving the winning Captain the choice of his team having the breaks in either the odd or even games 1,3,5 or 2,4,6, and the player against the break has to win it back, i.e. chase the break, not break back.
If the match ends in a draw, then team aggregate decides the winner.
Played at the Bouley Bay Inn, Jersey, Saturday 29th April 2006.
Game 1 The match started off well for the visitors, with Guernsey Captain Trevor Gallienne winning the toss and electing his team to have the breaks in games 1,3 & 5, this put himself on first with the break, against Jersey Captain Steve Ahier.
Trevor put in a fine opening break of just over 8,000, Steve played a few shots but knocked over a peg leaving one ball on the table, Trevor easily dispatch that and regained the break, running the rest of the clock out and taking the first game for Guernsey 13,340 - 0.
Game 2 Next on was Bob King for Jersey, playing Paul Dyer, and Bob seemed to start well but soon broke down scoring less than 1,000, both players struggled to win the break but it was the Guernsey man that prevailed, making a solid 6,000 effort before leaving a ball between the 100 and the 10 pocket.
After a few seconds of deliberation Paul played off the left hand cushion with side, and to the cheers of the Guernsey supporters, hit the ball well, saving his score and winning an important game against the break.
Things looked to be slipping away for the home team, now 2-0 down and almost 18,000 down on aggregate, and with another Guernsey break game to come the visitors were contemplating their first away win in this fixture.
Game 3 Next saw Guernsey's Tom Oliver pitted against Nick Barnett, and Tom started well, playing at a measured pace, he managed an opening effort of 2,800 in just over 6 minutes, but just when he looked to be settling in Tom missed a 50/30 shot, saving his score but leaving one ball just behind the 50 pocket, the other near the 30.
Nick managed to dispatch both in two shots and proceeded to play most of the clock for 9,090, touching up with just over a minute remaining, finally getting the home team off the mark and reducing the aggregate deficit to just under 12,000.
Game 4 The momentum now seemed to shift to the home team, and Island Champion Mick Eouzan comfortably won the next with the break, albeit in two visits, 14,140 - 220 against Terry Kenny. That put the match perfectly poised at two all, and an aggregate of 24,700 - 22,540 in the home team's favour.
Game 5 In the penultimate game, Darren Ogier for Guernsey took on Jersey's under 40's champion James Jeanne. This was a scrappy affair at first, with both players seemingly suffering some nerves, and it looked to be going the way of the visiting player when Darren, although only going off with a few hundred, managed to keep James from winning the break and later regaining it himself, building up a 2,500 lead.
However James finally managed to gain the break and, with around 5 minutes left, played out the rest of the table for 4,500 to put the home team in front for the first time in the match and increased the aggregate lead to 4,500.
Game 6 Any glimmer of hope the away team had for an aggregate victory was promptly snuffed out with Jersey's Tim Ringsdore giving Matt Ogier no chance at all, almost playing the table out for fine 11,430 break, the highest of the night, and with it victory for the Jersey side, the final score 4-2 with an aggregate difference of 41,040 plays 25,700.
Despite the final statistics, this was one of the closest matches in Jersey for some years, with the home team having to overcome a sizable early Guernsey lead, and the first time since 1997 that Guernsey has managed more than a single point in Jersey.
Steve Ahier (0) lost *Trevor Gallienne (13,340) Bob King * (1,470) lost Paul Dyer (6,070) Nick Barnett (9,090) beat *Tom Oliver (2,910) Mick Eouzan * (14,140) beat Terry Kenny (220) James Jeanne (4,910) beat *Darren Ogier (2,540) Tim Ringsdore * (11,430) beat Matthew Ogier (620) Jersey 4 beat Guernsey 2
Channel Island Individual Championship The final match of the night was the CI Individual Championship, with Guernsey Champion Trevor Gallienne taking on Jersey Champ Mick Eouzan. This is played as a double game with a break each.
Mick won the toss and put Trevor in, who uncharacteristically broke down within the first 1,000, Mick won back the break and seemed to be cruising until an errant shot saw him off the table but saving his 4,600 lead, Trevor broke back immediately and ended up taking the leg 5,200 - 4,630, game on!
Mick however, rose to the occasion and kicked off with a steady, 8,880, touching up when he decided he had done enough to win, Trevor regained the break and played out the rest for 6,410, but Mick had judged it well, taking the title on aggregate 13,510 - 11,160.
Channel Island Team Championship This game, a traditional prelude to the weekend's main event, involves the Guernsey Team Champions Vs. their Jersey counterparts and is played 5 a side, with the away team having all the breaks.
This was played at the Africa House on Friday night and saw the home team playing the Guernsey Champions, Layabouts (play out of the Plough Inn, St Peter Port).
Paul Dyer got the Layabouts off to a good start, opening with just under 10,000 and taking the first leg, but that was the visitors only success, with Africa House quickly taking control, and wins from Steve Ahier, Nick Barnett, Island Champion Mick Eouzan and current World Champion Graeme Le Monnier giving the hosts a 4-1 victory, although many of the games were close.
The JBBL would like to thank both the Africa House and Bouley Bay Inn, for providing great venues, high quality tables and free buffets after the matches.

Sounds like a really exciting and competitive night and it is certainly a brilliantly detailed match report from our man in Jersey. Hope it is OK to copy most of it for the next BBQ?
Well done Jersey for softening them up for us.

Is that definite BC, not the Cordeliers this year?
Bob Chapple I presume?
Is there a hotel near there that's any good?
Thanks

Latest news from Guernsey. UFO spotted by commercial airline pilot.
Could it have been the Jersey team waving their white flags before they fly over this weekend ?

looks like it was the Guernsey team waving the white flags....... ;D JERSEY 4 Guernsey 2 Well done boys........... Morning Harry - hope that the present from poundworld for 'er indoors made it home safely ! OK Jersey won in 4-2 but it was a highly competitive encounter with Trevor Gallienne's impressive performance when he played the table out against The Iceman (his time will come). Bob Chapple just failed to overhaul Graham Bisson in the final game against the break, however over two games Guernsey's player of the year beat the same player to justly claim the Channel Islands individual winners title. Guernsey league and team knockout winners The Giants proved that their success this season was no fluke, as they went on to win the Channel Islands team trophy held on the previous evening. Full and official report to follow no doubt from Nick. Back at the hotel after the match, with the barman's refusal to serve Nick with any more drinks after 12.45am that makes it 3-1 to Guernsey doesn't it ?!!

Good luck to the Guernsey team to play Jersey in the six-a-side Inter Insular match; Trevor Gallienne, Bob Chapple, Tom Oliver, Pete Lowe, Paul Dyer and Ian Champion will play against Jersey's finest on Saturday.
This evening the 2008 Guernsey league winners and the 2007 C.I. team winners The Giants captained by Bob Le Moignan, will play the Jersey league winners in Jersey.

As requested by Pete, a report from the Jersey v Guernsey match 2008.
This year being played in Jersey at the Shakespeare Hotel (possible venue for the International) the match was a bit more one sided then a couple of years ago when they last visited.
As per usual, 6 games were played, 3 breaks each, with the toss winning Captain choosing the breaks. This year Trevor Gallienne won the toss and as expected by 99% of the crowd present chose breaks 2, 4 & 6 (he could have the break then).
Game 1
Nick Barnett v Peter Lowe
Nick had the break and proceeded to pile on the pressure, not just Peter but the whole Guernsey team as he calmly and without any scares knocked in 9,640. Peter came to the table and potted a couple of balls at the back of the table but soon made a mistake due to not being used to the grip of the baize in Jersey compared to his native land. Nick returned and finished the table off for a final score of 10,150 against 380. Advantage Jersey!
Game 2
Graham Bisson v Tom Oliver
Tom with the first Guernsey break of the night made a very slow and methodical solid score approaching the 4,000 mark. Graham came to the table under a slight bit of pressure, due to the time remaining and the speed he plays with a couple of balls looking quite 'dodgy' at the back. He potted them both and left himself enough time to come from behind and take the game 5,330 to 4,020. Jersey lead 2-0.
Game 3
James Jeanne v Paul Dyer
James, now a regular in the Jersey team had the break (which he was thankful of as last time he played Trevor against it and didn't get a shot). A composed and very solid break with the majority around the 50's started with 8,370. Paul came to the table and potted a couple of shots but then white pegged it. James returned to the table and played the remaining time out for 3,810. Final score 12,180 v 0. Jersey 3-0 and looking in total control.
Game 4
Nigel Ryall v Trevor Gallienne
Trevor started the game off in his usual steady and masterful precision potting, however, nearing 8,200 a ball whipped out and just missed the white peg - break ended. Nigel came to the table with a minuscule chance of winning the game due to the speed of Trevor but only managed to score 270. Trevor came back on and remained there until the end scoring a total of 12,030. Guernsey back in it? 3-1
Game 5
Mick Eouzan v Ian Champion
Mick broke off for Jersey for their final break of the night and made an unspectacular but very steady break of 8,250. This turned out to be far to much for Ian as he did manage to get the break back but could only get to 3,820. Mick got back on the table and finished with a total score of 9,270. All over for Guernsey, Jersey lead 4-1.
Game 6
Dennis Helleur v Bob Chapple
The final game of the match was the lowest scoring of the night, with the pressure of Bob only managed to break off with 300 after hanging them, Dennis came to the table, maybe to early as he couldn't capitalize and the balls ended up going scrappy. The majority of the game was played at the back of the table but Dennis ended up running out the winner with the scores finishing 2,880 v 380.
Jersey 5 - Guernsey 1
Dennis Helleur, being the Jersey Captain for the first time had great pleasure in picking up the trophy again for Jersey, this win making it three wins on the trot for them.
After the Island match had finished we held the traditional Mens Jersey Champion versus the Mens Guernsey Champion. This is always a two legged affair with both players having a break off. This year the match was between Graham Bisson and Trevor Gallienne. Trevor trying to win some pride back for Guernsey after their beating earlier in the evening.
Trevor won the toss again (thats the last time I use that coin) and put Graham in for the first break and proceeded to knock in just over 5,000. Trevor, not expecting to come to the table didn't do a lot and left two balls at the back after only scoring a couple of hundred. Graham, back on the table didn't make the same mistake again and finished off the table for a total score of 7,040 playing 230.
The second game Trevor broke off chasing a low score, had plenty of time to get to his target. All was going swimming well for him when he got to and passed Grahams' first leg total, however, roughly 500 past it he had a 'DE JA VU' moment and nearly took out the white peg again. With the scores so close neither player could capitalize until Trevor managed to get the break back with less then 3 minutes to go. This still wasn't the end however as another mistake let Graham in again. This time, the bar dropped and he still needed 550 to win the game. Sinking one in the 100 he had 3 white balls left with two of them up by the 20 and 30 pocket on the left hand side. Going for a brave shot he tried to get one back into the 200 pocket but didn't quite have the speed correct and it never reached. Second leg final scores - Trevor 8,240, Graham 880.
A fantastic match but Trevor kept his nerves (just) and took the Trophy back to Guernsey after Bob Le Moignan had won it last year.

And finally, good luck to all those travelling for the Guernsey Open on Sunday.
A few good points Nick. The Pennisula is a very good Hotel and there are pleanty of boats which are cheaper than planes, running to Guernsey this weekend. There is a pub near the Hotel called The Houmet Tavern which has a good Guernsey locals public bar. You should feel at home there. Also reasonable bar lunches with Jersey Royals as an option to chips. See ya there ?

Hello everybody
Firstly I would like to congratulate the rest of the Jersey team on a fine performance, playing extremely well to stifle the visiting Sarnians and not let them get in to the match, and also to Trevor for winning his "God knows how many?"
and whilst I can't speak for other players that chose not to travel to England this time, I can convey to you the reasons why I chose not to go, they are as follows:- I hope this clarifies my reasons for not travelling this time
WORLD EXCLUSIVE; Following a tip off from sources in Jersey I can reveal the true reason behind Nick's refusal to travel to the UK for the International and to Guernsey for the Open. Following drastic changes in hairstyle his passport photograph is no longer acceptable and he is not prepared to replace the current one until it expires. On one occasion when he tried to leave the Island his passport was not accepted as valid at the airport check in.......

And in reply to Norman and Bob, I would love to be able to come to the Guernsey Open, but unfortunately it is just at the wrong time for me, as work commitments make it difficult, I was still looking this morning to see if I could wangle it, but the pathetic ferry services we have are proving an obstacle.
HD don't run at all at the weekend, and if I went with Condor, then I would have to stay two nights, and unbelievably, the ferry ticket costs £51.50?
Is there still a reserves list?
And if you turned up on the day, would you be able to register and play?
What time is it starting?

If only you knew the truth. I used to like you and only try to have a giggle with people I like. Won't try to have a giggle with you again. Do apologise.... No, I have never done ANYTHING constructive for bar billiards, have I? As I said, if only you knew the truth. I think you should've been at the AGM when Eric announced that he had booked this hotel for the event, and then you would've realised what I thought to the decision to stage it there again. Let's just say: I was constructive, but as I wasn't going to be there, more should've been done to find somewhere else by the ones that were going to be there. So I WAS agreeing with you to THAT extent. The thing is that we have been told in the past that you want to stay within a few miles of an airport that you can get to, for fear of "falling off the end of the earth". So to now suggest that you would have travelled to Oxford sounds strange. I think Eric tried to find a suitable, and suitably cheap, hotel in Brighton without success. My friends call me Pete, by the way. Love Peter.

THIS THREAD NEEDS UNRAVELLING.
Some positive posts are in danger of being glossed over because they're being discussed under the wrong header: future visits of Jersey to play their Internationals, and problems to be overcome regarding their accomodation and possible alternative localities are being discussed under the header 'Jersey v Guernsey challenge'.
SENIOR MODS - PLEASE GET IT SORTED !
Furthermore - isn't it about time Guernsey were given their own board - especially now they are running an annual Open ?
And discussions on 'Jersey' take place on rival boards - the 'International Bar Billiards' one and the 'Tournaments' one. Often separate threads are started on the same topic and we don't know which one to follow up on.
A NEATER ARRANGEMENT PLEASE.
Thanks, tommo
Better late than never, a huge chunk of this thread has now been hived off and given its own topic thus: "England v Jersey Feb 2008" - tommo (now the owner of moderator's hat :D)

We are open to discussion on this and will respond to questions in a suitable thread, not here. One brief answer that has been raised before, we have never refused any league a request for a board, provided that league sees a need and that league asks for it. Sav.

I'm sorry if this comes across as me being critical Sav, but it is borne out of frustration. Because once a discussion-laden thread goes out of kilter it becomes out of control very quickly. For instance, I might have things to add to this thread but am not going to (apart from this) at pains of being told I'm going off topic.
Moderators such as yourself and Q have helped with this sort of thing in the past, it's not impossible although that's the message we seem to be getting.
And you have a good theme going with boards of increasing importance - non-members, then members, then for leagues, then for counties...........but the really important bit at the top (Internationals and World Championship) remains a mishmash.
