Early days yet I know..... but does anybody know when the entry forms will be available?
I believe that a special rate has been agreed with the Merton (£64 per night for 2 sharing a double room on B&B) and there have been some good flight prices with Flybe lately..... so we are now all booked and ready to roll! 8-)
Now, all we need to do is get our entry forms sent..... to make sure that we can actually play when we get there!! ::)
PS. A cautionary word for anybody who wants to arrive early..... or stay on after the Tournament...... the Merton are charging their standard rate (£103 per night for 2 sharing on B&B) on other nights apart from the Friday, Saturday and Sunday...... ::) :'(

We have just been in touch with the Merton and they told us that the special rate that Dave mentioned of £64 per night for 2 sharing a double room B&B included Thursday as well.
The price for a single room is £52 per night B&B, which I think is rather steep as that makes it £20 per night extra. This will make a lot of people think twice about going this year, as it makes it a very expensive weekend.

While it is always nice to stay at the venue where the tournament is being played, there are a few hotels around the vicinity of the Merton, that offer rooms and meals on a B & B basis. Try going onto the jersey tourism web-site, and looking up the various hotels and guest houses that are there, and have availability for the week-end of the tournament.
I looked at 1 hotel in particular, and was quoted on-line for 5 nights on a B & B basis of £ 200. If anybody is interested in looking you will find the hotel I am refering to.
It is directly opposite Howard Davis Park.

Hi, i have just joined the site and live in Jersey. What you need to remember is that the Merton Hotel offer the leasure facility as well (indoor/outdoor pool complex, jacuzzis, wave machine, water slide, saunas etc.) so when youre not playing or supporting you always have that to do to unwind. That would explain why the prices are higher than usual. i have had some great reviews from friends and colleagues so it would be more than worth the money.
Having said that, there are plenty of places nearby, and town is not at all far away (5 minute walk) so you can get to the venue quickly from anywhere in town.

Hi and welcome to our forum.
Merton may look to have marvellous leisure facilities but is too expensive for me as a single traveller out there for a boozy long weekend. If I go I'll be looking for a B&B I guess, after so many years of superb deals at the De Normandie, that will not be easy to come close to.

Thanks As I said, there are plenty of resonably priced hotels & b&b's nearby, even last years venue have cheaper prices without a deal (the Ommaroo hotel two minutes walk) the Normandie is probably three minutes away. to be honest, the merton is a great location in the fact it is close to other places to stay.
The last thing we want is for the English contingient (and guernsey i suppose..) to be put of competing because of the costs to stay. This has been one of the major causes for the numbers to dwindle ove the past couple of years.
Has anyone asked the Merton whether they can remove the Leasure facility access from the cost of the room seeing as you probably wont be going?

Its not just the hotel the flights seem to have risen steeply as well. Ive never paid more than £65 each for our flights but looked most days over the last couple of months and the cheapest i can find is £88 each. Flybe look cheap but when you start going through it soon adds up. Only checking in 1 bag between us then theres £12 each way for seats! (I would stand up but dont think they would allow that).
I usually take my cue with me but that could add another £40 on making our flights end up over £100 each. Cue will def be staying at home.
Anyone found any cheaper flights!
This could amount to £400 before even starting on the spending (drinking) money. Unfortunately it is turning into an expensive weekend but all said and done we will be there.

Having already booked flights, I was disappointed that the "special rate" was only available at the Merton on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights as we like to come out on the Wednesday to spend a couple of days looking round the island. :'( I would have thought that they would be able to offer the same rate every night for the duration of our stay as I would be surprised if the hotel will be anywhere near full at that time of year. It would probably encourage more people to come out early (and therefore spend more money at both the hotel and locally in Jersey) if the hotel was more flexible about this.... perhaps one of the organisers of the Tournament could speak to the hotel about this? ???

Trouble is that you fly from Plymouth ;D

why dont you have a look at condor ferries? get a boat over... i know flights are ridiculous, flybe and ba are the more expensive of the airlines to jersey...
ferry prices are £30 each way as a foot passenger from portsmouth to St. Helier, not sure what baggage allowance is but you can pretty much take anything with you (which means you cue!)....
i can have a word with the committee about the hotel rates to see if these would be flexible, as you say it would increase the amount of people wanting to stay, and for a longer period of time

This year will see my 13th visit to Jersey and I've always sailed except for just the one occasion (when Sparky arranged everything for me).
We are travelling from Weymouth on the Hi-speed catamaran (takes three and a half hours) and we get to take the car over for free as part of our package deal.
We have booked direct with CondorBreaks.com on the internet. You can also do it by the phone 0845 230 1430.
Our deal: 2 x adults Half Board @ £209 ea minus £30 ea for one night free...... = £358, plus Holiday Insurance (essential under the terms of booking).
Looking at the Merton when it's offered as part of the ferry package deal, they offer special deals only for stays Monday to Thursday.
So we are booked in at the Ambassadeur, St Clement. This is just a mile further round the coastal road from the De Normandie. We stayed there last year and the food was very good - one of the best hotels we've stayed at. One drawback - careful when you walk out of the forecourt - it's right on the main road so you have to have your wits about you. Don't stumble out there drunk !

As Milko said earlier special price includes the thursday aswell. We have 6 of us flying from Gatwick on thursday at 10.55 and coming back Monday at 10.00 i think, might be 11. Hotel and flights all in comes to just under £200 per person. Thats only about £20 extra than last year with added luxury of the leisure facilities which i may use if sober enough.
Jean - Do not click accept seats or chose seats and they will be allocated free of charge at check in. Just click continue at the bottom, this should save £24 between the 2 of you ;). See you next week.

I was down at the Mornington Hotel yesterday doing some work, and spoke to the manager about the WC in Novemeber, he seemed keen and said they would do a twin room for £45, or a single for £30, that was with a Continental breakfast.
They've got a nice bar, and are right by Howard Davis Park, about 500 yards from the Merton, so it might be a cheaper alternative for those that are looking for somewhere else.
Their phone number is 01534 - 724452

You're right to ask, Chris, especially as we are told that entry to the World Championship Doubles is limited, and on a 'first come first served' basis.
However, I believe that some entry forms have already been received over here through the post, as Redhill were sorting out names on Tuesday night.

That is very strange..... there aren't any entry forms on either the AEBBA or Jersey Websites. ::) ??? :'( If there are any in circulation, please could somebody either send one to me or make some copies & bring them up to Berks oin Sunday? 8-)

Hi Dave I have some entry forms you can have on Tuesday, if you don't get any before hand. Sparky Thanks Sparky, that would be very helpful. 8-) However, it raises the question that if they have been sent out to some players...... why are they not available to EVERYBODY? ??? >:(

I have not been asked to put a form on the AEBBA site.
Re the Jersey site Nick B. (Webmaster) is probably not playing this season and will not be at the World Championships, may be the reason for the lack of an electronic version. My hard copies arrived a few days ago.
Just send the entry fee (£10 singles, £12 per pair), cheques payable to Jersey Bar Billiards League, and contact details to Graham Le Monnier, Flat 3, Carteret Court, Bagatelle Road, St Saviour, Jersey, JE2 7TP. That's all I've done for years.
Remember pairs is limited entry FCFS.

In case anyone feels safer with the original forms I have scanned tham and put them on the AEBBA site along with the covering letter. They are not very good quality as the originals are faint photocopies. I have upped the contrast a little.

Hi to you all,
Apologies for not posting sooner, but as some of you are aware the forms were posted out last week to those that I have addresses for from years back, which is why that list is limited. If others want forms sent on then please provide an address.
Alternatively, pm me or send an email to glemon@jerseymail.co.uk and I will email you back with the forms attached (hopefully as comp playing up).
So no excuses now, get filling in the forms and see you all in November.
Regards,
Graeme

Many thanks Graeme & Sav for getting the entry forms on to the AEBBA Website..... 8-)
Could I suggest that somebody puts a list of entries received here on the Forum? ???
It seems to have worked well for the other Opens this year and with the current postal problems would act as a safeguard to make sure that nobody who has entered is disappointed because their entry isn't received.... :-/
