Congrats Phil on a tremendous weekend for yourself and Leon. You were a class above the rest without a doubt.
What a fantastic venue The Merton hotel is definitely the best place I have ever stayed in in Jersey. Really classy, so much room , and we never got to see the leisure complex either. It has 2 restaurants, the food was excellent. Breakfast, well it had everything, you couldn`t possibly go hungry here. There was a burger bar (Jersey Joes) and even a sports bar upstairs where they had the football on all afternoon. This place has everything. When we arrived on Thursday and took a look around, as soon as we saw the table layout. it reminded me of the good old days back at the Inn on the Park. I hope the hotel are as happy with us because we can`t wait to come back next year already

This was Phil's fabulous rendition of Against All Odds with great support from R-up Paul Sainsbury. Both players played out of their skin. Outstanding achievement 'Big dog' on winning both the singles and doubles! You were a class above the rest all weekend.....
Chris (FTG ;D), please remake your link (post again)

Judging from the posts of others I wish I'd been there to see Phil Collins become the 2009 Single and Pairs World Champion (with Leon of course ) but not so sure about the Karaoke
Congratulations Phil and I'm not surprised after seeing how you played, over there, against KT a year or two ago.

To echo some of the comments above.... many congratulations to the new world champion Phil Collins who played brilliantly over the whole weekend to win both the singles and the doubles with Leon Beer.
Paul Sainsbury was the unlucky, but very worthy, runner-up in the singles with Steven & Keith Sheard the runners-up in the doubles final, in which the standard of play and high scoring were fantastic to watch.....
Bernie McCluskey won the Plate Competition.... after being runner-up last year in the same competition....!
Many thanks to Graham, Sean, Dave Jones and all of the Admin Desk team who did a brilliant job throughout the weekend and made everything run so smoothly.... also to Nigel Ryall who gave us all some fantastic tables to play on.
The Merton was certainly an excellent venue, great facilities, plenty of room, good food and very helpful..... the only criticism that I could level against the hotel was the lack of staff that they had on within the room of the Tournament on the Saturday afternoon..... with over 200 people there (all drinking! ), they seemed to only have 1 person on the bar, meaning that Colleen spent nearly 2 hours collecting glasses as it reached the stage where there was nowhere to put down a full or empty glass..... yet when the time came for the evening meal break, with everybody leaving the room, suddenly there seemed to be staff everywhere!!
The only other thing that spoilt the weekend for me, was the behaviour of one of the other players on the Saturday evening who, when severely under the influence of too much alcohol, decided to put his hands in a totally inappropriate place on a lady that he hardly knew....... and who certainly did NOT want his attentions.
The slapped face that he received was the least that he deserved..... an apology the next day (or even today!) would have been a step in the right direction to make up for it, sadly that was not forthcoming.
But...... apart from that...... it was a brilliant weekend, finished off in style by Phil & Paul (who both got the biggest cheer of the weekend) in the Karaoke with Guernsey's Champs running it a close second for his version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"..... which I am sure will be long remembered!

I agree with everything that SirKT has said: the Merton is a lovely hotel with comfortable, modern rooms that are well soundproofed. The bar billiards area was absolutely perfect, with plenty of room between tables and a good solid floor. The Merton was easily worth the extra £8/night for a double room, it knocked spots off the Ommaroo.
Once again, Graeme and his team did a fantastic job in organising a tournament that ran like clockwork. The tables were a pleasure to play on.
Congratulations to Phil for both victories, also to Leon for the doubles, Paul as the singles runner up and to Bernie McCluskey for the plate win.
I hope the financial situation has eased enough next year to allow some of those missing this year to return again.
Trevor has tracked down the Channel TV clip on the tournament, I'm not sure how long the link will work for:

Congratulations to all the finalists, but especially the Spearpoint 2009 World Champion Phil Collins who played the best Bar Billiards all weekend, closely followed by Paul Sainsbury.
Thanks to all of those who came over for the weekend, the Merton Hotel turned out to be a worthy venue for the fantastic Bar Billiards played over the weekend.
Many thanks for all the comments (mainly positive ) received over the weekend, pleasekeep them coming, good or bad so that when we meet up with Hotel management later this month we can let them know your thoughts.

Well done Phil, you played fantastic all W/End and are a worthy champion of both the doubles with Leon and the singles and I doubt we will ever see both won by the same player ever again….Brilliant!!
Unlucky Paul, I watched two of your outstanding matches against Paul Newton & Dennis Helleur, one of which was your first ever play out in Jersey and thought you had a great chance of winning your first ever World Championship, especially after opening with over 8,000 in the final on one of the slowest ever tables that I’ve seen for this tournament, but Phil showed what a fantastic player he is by opening with enough in the 2nd game to take the title…Superb!!
Well done to Bernie on winning the Plate.
Well done also to Graeme, Sean and the rest of the organizers on running another excellent World Championships.
We thought the Hotel was fantastic but Lin was a bit disappointed about the Leisure Complex as she was unable to swim in the indoor pool, as it was too shallow and more for children than adults. It was also a shame that I had to walk so far (upstairs) to get the beer that I wanted from another bar.
I’m glad that I wasn’t on that flight that Chris T was on about on another thread as I don’t like flying that much myself.
We also had a problem, as Stevens, Marks & my cues that were all together in Marks £75 case were lost at the baggage reclaim. While we were at the desk 20 min’s later we were told they had been found out on the tarmac!! The cue case then came through all flat and smashed up, so had obviously been run over by something big!! You can imagine the shock on my face and the swear words that I said at the time but bar a few scratches I think they are ok, although Mark has them all at the moment.

Great weekend - i agree that Phil should also win the karaoke competition and i also suggest that he does not own up to me in the smoking area half hour before the final that he has promised to sing if he wins - big mistake Phil - but the boy did good x well done to Leon and Paul Sainsbury too x x

On a bad note i have just spoken to Nigel Ryall who informs me that during our someone went into the main room and stole a number of his possessions and Ken's cue - disgusting behaviour. You just dont expect this when everyone knows everyone and we had such a fantastic weekend. you know who you are and should be absolutely ashamed of yourself.

Echoing all that's been said above, a great and memorable weekend, one of which the organisers should be proud.
The move to a new venue seems to be generally regarded as a success, the Merton being difficult to find at first by those with a car, but 30 minutes had been reduced to 2 by the last day ! ;D
I have put a separate report of the Pairs Semis and Finals from a spectator's point of view which confirms the standard of play, for Fasttrack Phil then to go on and win the Singles Title as well just confirms what a great player he is. What an achievement for Richard Wooton too - World Singles Semifinalist after such a serious injury to his hands.
The standard of food on the island was great (we can certainly recommend the tennerfest at the Seymour Inn); the karaoke was enjoyable, and our sea crossing took exactly 4 hours both ways - what more could we want ?
