Good luck to the newly formed Guernsey FC who will be playing against mainland teams in the Combined Counties League this season thanks to an ambitious chairman and some good sponsorship.
I hear that they narrowly lost their first game at Footes Lane 6-5 against AFC Wimbledon (Tommo's favorites) at the weekend and their next match is next Saturday against Bristol City with the League starting a couple of weeks after that.
Let's hope that they get plenty of support at their matches and are as successful as AFC Wimbledon, who started at the same level themselves in 1992 and have just gained promotion to Division 2 of the football league this season. 8-)

I have been following the progress of the 'Green Lions' with no small amount of prompting from Stormin'. ;D
There's much in their favour, Matt Le Tissier as their President, and Glyn Dyer 'son of Diddy' in their team, and I wish them well.
It was originally the intention for them to play all matches, away and home, on the mainland, but now I believe that mainland teams will visit, helped by an offer of subsidised travel from Guernsey FC.

Yes GFC will now be playing their home games in Guernsey due a rather good sponsorship deal.
Although we lost on saturday it was really good experience with 1060 people in attendance. from what i can gather that will be a lot larger attendance than any other teams in the league.

What to expect ? Well, for starters, the average home attendance of Combined Counties 1st Division teams will be nothing like 1060, it will be more like 60. So Guernsey FC will be the 'Man U' of the division. The grounds will be primitive, three sides uncovered, and one 'cattle-shed' stand is the norm at that level. Guernsey really need to get into the Ryman League a.s.a.p. All those teams are there for the taking, so you need to storm through and the only way to do it is with a prolific striker who will bang in 60 goals and set your sights high, with a target of 100 points in your first season. AFC Wimbledon, who started at the same level themselves in 1992 btw it was 2002, Dave. ;)

Well we hope that we have a good strike force.
Ross Allen plays for the Guernsey Rangers (The Venue for the Guernsey Breakaways Bar Billiard team) and score 40+ goals last season. His dad was a for pro in America and the leading scorer for 3 years. Who In 1979, the nineteen year old Allen came to California on vacation. While in California, he attended an open tryout with the California Surf of the North American Soccer League and gained a contract offer. Over three years, he played three NASL outdoor and two NASL indoor seasons with the Surf. In 1981, he moved to the New Jersey Rockets of the Major Indoor Soccer League. After one season, he moved to the Cleveland Force where he played for six seasons. In 1988, the Force lost to the San Diego Sockers in the MISL championship. In Jun 1988, the Force released Allen.[1] By this time he had played 254 league games, scored 275 goals and added 180 assists with Cleveland.
We also have a Guern called Ryan Zico Black who has played in a number of semi proffesional team. as well as Northern Ireland u21's.
I can see the home crowds staying above the 800 throughout the season. and with a number of Guerns moving to the mainland i can also see the away gates increasing from 60.
Bring on the Ryman league

With your travelling support you should receive the red carpet treatment at these lowly venues, but shouldn't encounter any tasty opposition until you get into the Conference South.
Meanwhile it's good old honest grass roots football without the cycnicism encountered at the top level. Enjoy the beer tents and the hamburger stalls, and don't be too hard on the match officials, they can be particularly poor - but then they're only amateurs, after all.
You will probably find a team with high aspirations who will try to rival you (our bane for the first three years was Walton and Hersham) and then the put-downs from rival supporters can be quite entertaining.
Plenty to look forward to, and you may even get a streaker on the pitch, like happened to us at Banstead. I had to cover Margo's eyes ! ;D

What about Ryan Zico Black´s old man then Oge ? A bit before your time perhaps ? Dessie was a good player in his day. Didn't he have a connection with Georgie Best ?

I'm not sure what level dessie played at. Ryan is named after a pretty good brazilian though. Did you know that Gsy beat Bristol this week 6-0.

Keep it up fellas!
This is what our website had to say about the Guernsey visit (quoting Wimbledon manager Terry Brown): "I spoke to Marcus today and he was delighted not only to win in Guernsey but also with the very generous hospitality, which was first class. The whole weekend was a great experience for the team, not least playing in front of a good crowd of over 1,000 on what was, according to Marcus, an exhilarating game on a perfect pitch. By all accounts Guernsey will do very well in the Combined Counties League this season."

We are unsure at the moment.
Just a couple of names for you to watch out for Charlton (after Bobby) Gauvain - he is 11 and has recently come back from trials with Bournemouth. Bristol City are also looking at him. This week Fulham have also requested to see him for a trial.
Alex Scott.- he is only 8 has already been to Bournemouth and other clubs likely to be interested.
for a Link with George best. My mother-in-law went around with his sister. Her 2 nieces also played George Best twin sister in the 2009 documentary on the BBC.

Best player I ever saw in 30 years of being an active football supporter. I remember one game we were leading Southampton 3-0 at half time and he scored a second-half hat trick. Looked like a god amongst men on the pitch.

I am afraid i am also away and will not be able to comment. I think there is also a report in the Sun.
Yes Matt is a God. The strange thing though is that his brother was better.
See what odds you can get on Ross being the league leading scorer

I could agree with you except we were playing in the top flight back then! :) You must be referring to pre-Premiership days as it was formed in 1992. But you're right that Oxford Utd were in the old 1st Division, I've found a note in my diary here: 2nd Jan 1988: Oxford Utd 2, Wimbledon 5 (5 wins on the trot moves us up to 5th place!) 8-)

Well done to Guernsey ! It's gonna be a breeze, a walk in the park.
My lads have had a baptism of fire, losing 2-3 to Crawley last Friday in the Carling Cup, and 2-3 also to Bristol Rovers today. Both cracking games, but what a contrast in my own travelling arrangements.........
1) Crawley v AFC: 30 minute journey from my house to the stadium by (free) bus and same coming back.
2) AFC Wimbledon v Bristol Rovers: outwards journey took THREE hours as a large section of the M25 was closed due to an accident last night which blocked both directions. Diverted to Croydon, spent a whole hour in a jam at Kenley. (Apparently M23 way was snarled up at Coulsdon, and A217 had an enormous tail back down Reigate Hill, both trying to accommodate what would have been the M25 traffic.) Upon arrival tried to park as per normal only to find a traffic warden posting bills on all the cars, and taking photos, so took a chance on parking at Homebase, to justify which I nipped in and bought Margo some flowers which I left in prominent view before hoofing it to the ground just in time to catch the closing minutes of the first half. Return journey was not so bad but the motorway was still shut, apparently reopening tonight so hopefully won't affect people trying to get to the Bucks Open tomorrow. So you could say that I was just relieved to get there and see some football amidst the rowdy section of the crowd behind the home goal, although it was like being at the bottom of a rugby scrum when we went wild as we levelled the match at 2-all. And then we we dealt the killer blow when a dodgy penalty was awarded: I was sure it was their player, not ours, who handled the ball....... >:(
Still good on Diddy Dyer Junior. First goal of many, hopefully. ;)

I watched the highlights of game on Channel TV Sports Report after returning from a day trip to Jersey. Glyn Dyer's goal was similar to one Lionel Messi scored last season, when he had to backtrack, swivel and shoot all in one movement as the ball was behind him. Knaphill's heads seemed to drop after that goal went in and Ross Allen scored a hat trick. I managed to phone Diddy at half time and he was absent also from the game, as he was working. However he was delighted that Glyn got that historic first goal. No doubt he celebrated with a few tinnies later ::) The matches come thick and fast now with first away game next Tuesday.

Seven points after first 3 matches. First home win was followed by a 2-2 away draw v Hartley Wintney. Today - Guernsey 3-Walingham 0 - A brace from Glyn Dyer who is playing well at the moment ;D Not bad - 3 goals so far from a midfielder. Long way to go yet and some tough matches ahead with lots of travelling to away games, which they are not used to on that scale.

26/11/11 Combined Counties League Division One;
Guernsey FC 4 Hartley Wintney 0
Runaway League leaders Guernsey FC continued their remarkable home form against the previously unbeaten Hartley Wintney, who had a very good FA Cup qualifying run. Glyn Dyer still out injured, so they will be even better when he is back on form again.

Guernsey on course for promotion and flying high at the top of the league. Glyn Dyer back in the team after a long lay off due to injury, scored the opener in the most recent match. Despite being the shortest player on the pitch ::) he scored the opened with a header, and nearly had a second with a spectacular shot, followed by a fine save by their keeper. see the goal & brief highlights on www.channelonline.tv/channelonline_sportnews/displayarticle.asp?id=498375click the full screen tab for a better size view

Olympic Torch has just arrived and done a tour of St Peter Port streets which were lined with thousands of well wishers. Two of the the worthy torch bearers were Ross Allen of Guernsey FC who scored a hat trick against Exeter City in a pre season friendly earlier this week. Also retired surgeon Roger Allsopp (71) who recently became the oldest man to swim the English Channel.
On it's way to Jerseyland next - Lets hope it does not rain over there as usual ::)
