I am driving. Thanks Chris Do not go inland. stay on the coast road - not far ! Turn right out of the Peninsula Hotel. Hotel borders coast road, but entrance is on a road called Les Grandes Rocques, before you get to La Saline and Cobo Bay. I think there is an Off Licence on corner (LHS) and the Hotel entrance is just around the corner. If you have got as far as Rockmount and Cobo Bay Hotel, you have gone past the turning. Any problems just ask the locals, they are very friendly on The West Coast !

Congratulations to the deserved winner Kevin Tunstall who has won the 2010 Guernsey Open, beating Guernsey veteran John Beck in the final. Nigel Senior took the plate, defeating Guernsey's Darren Ogier who was very unlucky to loose his break in the second when it looked liked he was going to surpass Nigel's points from first game.

Well done Kev and Nigel...
Excellent re the break Hayley...
A very friendly and welcoming tournament thank you organisers.
I do though feel that there were far too many byes, I had one myself which really does not help in terms of playing and performance....( although I played CARP dyslexics can work that out)
A few people just did not turn up or left.. that is a shame especially in the main game.
Regards Chris
Good to see you Norman... so many thanks Bob for the lift you were a life saver!!! ;) :-*
I have pulled out of plates but in the first round only.

Two late entries have been slotted in as follows: Terry Kenny vs. Clive Thompson Gary Naftel vs. Lorraine Hall Not a good idea to inform us on here of Bye being filled when we are already on our way to the island ! My apologies to Terry Kenny for our 'late kick-off', but I was around on Saturday afternoon/evening and this could have been avoided if I had been forewarned, or, better - if the draw had been on display. Carp over, and a far more positive report from me on the event is to follow. 8-)

Highest Ladies break Hayley Tunstall 1,840? ..... well done to Geoff Powell, who thrashed me in the last 16. To add to Keith's summary After some early upsets, the Plate competition was necessarily strong too........ in the quarter finals..... Steven Sheard lost to Graham Bisson Graeme LeMonnier lost to Darren Ogier Nigel Senior w/o Lewis Stratford (poor Lewis had a great run, but had to catch his flight back at 8pm) Bob King beat Michelle Baden (Michelle had scored a superb break of 6k in the previous round to eliminate Chris Tupper) in the Semis.......... Graham Bisson 2490, Darren Ogier 3750 Nigel Senior 9550, Bob King 3120The Final........ Nigel ran up a superb rapid quick-fire 17,410 in the first leg; Darren Ogier played equally superbly and was on a 10,980 break when he went slightly out of position and pegged, immediately conceding.Well done to K.T. , a worthy winner of the Main, and to the 'surprise packages' Geoff Powell of Oxon - and John Beck of Guernsey, maintaining the Island's tradition in providing the runner-up. For anyone who has never heard of John Beck before, the islanders have provided me with this research on him. 1) A former bar billiards star of the past, he emigrated to Spain and has only recently returned; 2) Plays for the 'Layabouts' and teammates had predicted he would be a 'force to be reckoned with' - despite him having never played in an 'Open' before ! 3) Has been very ill and undergone a number of operations from which he was not expected to pull through - and was once even read the 'last rites'. So this makes his achievement all the more incredible and humbling. Well done to him ! Thank you to the organisers for staging a superb event, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Margo and I had managed to get in at the Peninsula, our first stay there, accommodation and meals absolutely superb ! Roll on a year from now !

Good summaries from both Milko and Tommo...... although a small correction to Tommo in that Darren had actually reached 9,980 (not 10,980) when he unfortunately took the peg...... still a great reply to Nigel's daunting target in Darren's first final. 8-) With regards to the "legend that is now John Beck"...... 8-) ..... what makes his perfomance even more amazing is that he was using the old spare cue from the practice table as I understand that he doesn't even own a cue himself...... :o :o :o A very quiet and unassuming man who always had a smile on his face throughout the whole weekend, I believe that he was "persuaded" to play again by Norman Wilkinson when he found out that he had returned to the island...... perhaps now, with some of his winnings, he might treat himself to a cue before the start of next season...... heaven help us all if he does though! ;D Congratulations to all of the winners and many thanks to everybody in Guernsey who made us feel so welcome...... as they always have. 8-) 8-) We look forward to next year...... but would hope that it is held at a different venue to this. :-X

The 'Gospel according to St Dave' differing ever so slightly from that of 'St Clive' but each bearing the other out. Can add that the islanders have decided that John can keep every penny of his prize money, as they are clubbing together to buy the said cue off the practise table so that John can have it for keeps. ;D ;D ;D

All this talk of the "Legend" John Beck is not making Steven's loss to him in the 1st Round any easier to take, ie; illness, no cue, 1st Open ;) but John stunned Steven in the 1st leg by making a fine 7,000brk against the break. Regarding the hotels, I thought the venue (Wayside Cheer) itself was excellent, although I can see where some people are coming from when they say that there was too much light coming through the windows when playing the tables facing that way. The balcony part though was good as you could see most of the tables being played without moving. We stayed at the Hogue de Pommier hotel which was nice enough, except the miserable waiter that wouldn't let Curt have his kippers and full breakfast and also made us four sit on two different tables on the monday morning, even though there were at least 20 tables with no one on!! :-/ I do hope though that the hotel for the venue is not going to take a block booking (Ramblers) so early (4 months before) and leave us with hardly any rooms left for the Bar Billiard fraternity. I feel like I've joined there association the amount of distance and times that I walked to and fro between each hotel. ::) It was also dark with no street lights and as I don't like the dark ::) it's a good job I had someone holding my hand. (thanks Curt ;D) I think if I'd been on my own I would have got lost and finished up at the airport, Oh no!! our hotel must have been close to that anyway!! ;D ;D ;D ;) Thanks to all the organisers of this Open for making this a great W/E spent in friendly company, so hopefully will be back next year, back at the Peninsula would be nice. Keith :)

A very fair assessment Keith, with both some of the positives and negatives that were mentioned over the weekend by many of the players about the suitability of the venue for the competition. 8-)
Having stayed at the actual hotel itself though...... I will only say that we would have preferred the walk to the Hogue du Pommier! :o :-X
A return to the Peninsula would guarantee our entry next year..... 8-)

Phew :o , what a weekend.
Stuck on the tarmac at Gatwick on friday whilst Guernsey Airport sorted their radar & radio out (leaving us precious little time to go down the town) :-X
Winning both Singles & Doubles matches (with Dave) on Saturday, Champs did give me a hell of a game though, opening with 11k in the first game.
Then winning this very well sponsored Open on sunday, at my third attempt :P A great effort by John in the final, he did say to me before the start that we had met in Jersey in the early 80`s at the BIOC, but i couldn`t quite remember.
Thanks again to Hamilton trustees who sponsored the event (very generous), also to the organisers, who are still learning to run a big tournament like this. Luke Oliver for his hard work on the computer all day and the staff at the Wayside cheer hotel who worked damn hard all weekend.
I certainly wouldn`t have a problem going back to play there next year. Although we were in the chalet type rooms outside the main building, they were clean & comfortable, no excessive noise. The food was excellent (3 breakfasts & 2 evening meals) and plenty of choice of draught beers & lagers as well. They must however, secure most of the rooms for the visiting players. The ramblers can go somewhere else ;D
On the Billiards side, the room was big enough and the viewing was great. From the raised floor surrounding two thirds of the room, you could see virtually every match, without distracting the players. I know there were a couple of moans by players about not knowing where they would be playing next, but Lukes programme was good. Nobody played on a table that they had previously visited, including the plate, until the Final.
So if it`s there again next year, with the sponsorship, you can count us in ;)

Phew :o , what a weekend. Stuck on the tarmac at Gatwick on friday whilst Guernsey Airport sorted their radar & radio out (leaving us precious little time to go down the town) :-X To be fair to our hard working boys and girls at The Airport, this particular problem was caused by Jersey Air Traffic Control ::) who suffered a temporary failure of their radio communications. This had a knock-on affect in Guernsey. 8-)

We finished second in the league once again, and were the only team to provide all five regular players to qualify for this years Guernsey Masters. However having no one from our team selected to play for Guernsey against Jersey this season, and only one player selected to play against England has left a bit of a strange atmosphere at the end of an otherwise very successful season, with Paul Dyer reaching the singles semis and Terry and Norman reaching the pairs final.
