Bit of fun at the Gladiators last night. We did not start till 8.40 and it was well over 19 mins on the clock, so I was a bit tired and a bit bored by the time I played at 10.15.
Dave Rose and Mick Murphy had had a good game. Mick was 5k down after the 1st leg but came back with 5,600. But then Dave made 4k and it was all over.
Simon Ellam, making a comeback to league play after 12 years, never really settled and his opponent (somebody from the Masons? Wells?) played really well to beat him fairly comfortably.
Martin Coulthard gave me a few chances at the start of the 1st but it took a few minutes to get the break back. I then made just over 16k as everyone else seemed to switch off from the proceedings. They were obviously as bored as I had been earlier. Martin had been making it fairly obvious that he would not play the 2nd leg. But he missed the 200 last ball and I was goaded into trying the same shot.
I thought "why not?" as I still had the break in the 2nd leg and I had travelled 60 miles for a game after all.
The 1st attempt was far too slow and they thought I was chickening out. Not at all, I went for it big time at the 2nd opportunity and just nicked the black. It fell in slow motion, but it gained everyone's attention somewhat. He still wanted to concede, which surely would have been the first time ever anybody had conceded through fear when actually ahead, even though the scores were about 400 to NIL.
He was talked into playing as Alan Lowe said I should go for the highest break. I made it quite clear that it did not interest me in the slightest.
Martin made it clear that, if I started with over 5k, he would go home. He was too busy talking to know what I had scored but I touched on at 4800. He played his next shot very slowly and then I returned for another 10k plus. He put his coat on at 4k or I would have let him have another go, he shook my hand at 8k, just as I was taking a shot, but he did not leave till the end of the game. He actually returned to shake my hand another twice, and again as I was getting into my car.
But at least it kept all the observers on the edge of their seats.
