Mick Loake 1,790 3,400* Lorin Clough 1,950* 2,040
Having won the toss Mick put me in to play the first break. Rather cunningly, I did not allow Mick to learn very much about the table as I came off shortly after 1k!! The next nine or ten minutes were very scrappy with neither player looking at all settled. With five minutes to go, however, Mick got the break back and looked to be doing well as he cruised past 3k. Unfortunately for Mick he lipped out of the right hand 50 hole on the break and the ball was left directly behind the 50 hole by about 4 inches. A very tricky shot. Mick's attempt was a little unlucky as he tried to tackle this problem off the cushion but missed the ball.......break lost. This left a couple of minutes for me to get a further 1k to finish approximately 1,700 up.
Mick should have felt confident going into the second leg with his break, particularly as he looked settled on the break. I was certainly more than a little concerned!! After only 800, however, Mick left a ball 8 inches short of the 100 hole and in a direct line behind the black peg. Despite a good shot and a successful hit, Mick's cue ball just tipped the white peg over and left me with the break.
For the next few minutes it was again very scrappy with neither player scoring more than 300 in any visit until I got the break back. I knew that the game was far too close for my liking and so set to work to try to grind out a break. With some luck as well as some solid play I managed to cruise past 3, 4 and even 5k. By the time I got to 5,960 break I left a tricky ball near the left hand whit peg. With hindsight and a clear mind this was an obvious shot to split the balls either side of the white peg..........but I had neither. I tried to go straight up the table but clipped the white peg and the score was lost.
This gave Mick the break back and enough time to win the match, only needing as he did about 3,000. He started well enough and got past 1k with ease. Unfortunately, he whipped the white ball when on the break yet again and was left the exact same shot as that which cost his 3k break in the first leg. This time Mick decided to play off the bottom of the table.....a brave shot. Whilst he hit the ball, he could not pot anything and the break was over.
The remaining two minutes were scrappy and the game and match was over.
Overall, an enjoyable (although scrappy) game on a challenging table. Had both players kept all of the scores that were lost by missed balls or white pegs then the scores would have better reflected some good play.
Still, onward!!

Simon beat Keith 9960-3750, this game was played at the headlands as there was a skittles game at rushden even though Damo had spoken to them whilst we were there! Game started similar to yours Lorin, dad started with 3k hit the split thick and pushed a ball behind the 50. Then pinned it all next shot!

Game finished Ian 6180/3570 Chas 250/1460
Chas started with a 1k break and then four times the break! Ian then got a steady 5k and sealed the first l after the both played down the bottom. In the second leg Ian started with 500 and chas then got the break back and got up to 4800 and four times te break again! Ian then went on and put a steady 2k on the board to make it through the next round. Chas had his chance though!

Hi, I was happily scoping my next oponent when I noticed something! Is the opening break determined by a coin toss or the draw? I thought it was the draw however elsie V HVP was coin toss!

The draw decides the break, who ever is drawn first gets the first break.
