Great information as ever, Old Blue. Those two were top of my list to visit (the Royal Oak on the way back from football) and I also have the Star, Goldalming to visit when I next get my car serviced in Milford.
So I needn't detour to Leatherhead now, and the Cricketers Ockley might make for a nice weekend visit the next time that wifey and I are at a loose end. 8-)

Hi Tommo.
Think I saved you a pretty fruitless trip on the Royal Oak, it was an awful place, didn't even stay for a drink it was so bad, which is unusual for me, to say the least. The Cricketers in Ockley is a lovely little pub though. The BB table is rather worn but still very functional.
I notice my previous reports of the demise of the tables in the Cricketers in Thames Ditton (here) and the Green Man in Bedfont (on the London thread) have been actioned on the relevant lists but still appear on the map - not sure if this has been missed or just not updated yet - apologies for mentioning if the latter, just wanted to flag up in case the former.
Best regards
OB
Deleted Cricketers TD and The Green Man in Bedfont from map - thanks OB!

Thanks Old Blue, Hopefully Barbelman will spot your comment and bring the map up to date. ;) The Cricketers Ockley - yes, lovely pub, used to be Oliver Reed's local. Check out this blog: shebloggedbynight.com/2012/the-state-of-the-blog-august-2012-edition/I like the comment by Stacia thus, "Landlord Mr Brian Duffell imposed the ban at The Cricketers in Ockley Surrey on Christmas Eve after 41 year old star climbed up the chimney and came down to give a barmaid a sooty hug." ;D

...and the Cricketers Ockley might make for a nice weekend visit the next time that wifey and I are at a loose end. 8-) Margo and I made the effort on the way to the match tonight - and were pleased that we did, what a friendly reception ! I was able to inspect the chimney piece that the legendary Ollie Reed climbed, and apparently there is an alcove up there which he hid in for some time before emerging covered in soot and scaring the wits out of the barmaid. Oh the table - yes they have one, a light wood Supreme about 4 years old. It doesn't get played as much as when first installed, but it's privately owned and in a good position where it could be played comfortably. Anyone looking for a new venue to try should seek this one out - well worth a visit. 8-)

Glad you enjoyed the Cricketers in Ockley, Tommo, I thought you would.
We did some more exploration today:
- the Royal Oak in Guildford no longer has a BB table. It's already crossed through on the list, following Squire Richard's summer visit, but still appears on the map, perhaps because it was unclear whether it had just gone for the summer. Suggest now delete from map
- the Star in Godalming also no longer has a table. A shame because it was an excellent pub in other respects
- The Prince of Wales in Hammer Vale does still have a table, quite a nice one, and an old West End 'billiards saloon' sign beside it - pictures attached. It was a very welcoming pub, not as much character as the Ockley Cricks but I'd say still well worth dropping into for a game.

Thanks OldBlue for your continued dedication to the cause. Have updated the list in accordance with your findings and we'll get the Star and the Royal Oak deleted from the AEBBA map.
It's great to know that the Prince of Wales has its table still - though I shouldn't imagine it gets played much - Hammer Vale being such an out of the way place. (Best way I can describe it is as the place where three counties - Hants, Surrey and W. Sussex - converge, although there is easy access off the A3 Guildford-Portsmouth trunk road).
The table looks a top-notch Jelkes and must be privately owned.

Another possible Thames Ditton venue (picked up from Beer In The Evening) that OldBlue may care to check out for us:
GREYHOUND, WESTON GREEN, THAMES DITTON, SURREY KT7 0JP (non-league)

Afraid not Tommo, I know the Greyhound in TD very well, and it doesn't have a BB table - at least not unless they've installed it in the last few days!

Alas, the Kings Head in Holmbury St. Mary no longer had its table when I was there on Sunday. I hadn't been expecting that one to go.

Alas, the Kings Head in Holmbury St. Mary no longer had its table when I was there on Sunday. I hadn't been expecting that one to go. Thanks OldBlue, Obviously didn't get played enough, and always sad to lose a potential venue. Over the years the Dorking area has only had brief flirtations with the game, with league play at Beare Green (the Dukes Head) and Capel (the Crown). Also one of Redhill's top players Alec Hastings formed a team comprising youngsters at Dorking Football Club, but that only lasted a couple of seasons and Alec now lives in Spain. Anyway, another one off my own list to visit, so you've saved the wife and I a wasted journey. 8-) tommo

I checked out the following today: - the Sun, Chobham - the Beehive, Egham - the Hobgoblin, Staines
I liked all of them in different ways, but unfortunately none of them had bar billiards tables any more - they need to be deleted from the list and map. On the bright side, that's all the pubs on the Surrey list checked out now.

Thanks Old Blue.
So we finish up with just six for Surrey - plus of course all the League ones centred around Redhill.
I'm hoping to do the Red Barn again (for the purpose of a meal) and maybe the Bell at Walton-on-the-Hill again (on the way back from football).
You can't beat the latter one for a quaint location, but once you find it you need a sturdy vehicle as the road surface is not made up !

Our quest for a pooch took us to Godstone Animal Rescue today (nothing suitable, unfortunately) but what we did find on the way home was a pub with a bar billiards table ! This being..... JOLLY FARMER, WHITEWOOD LANE, HORNE, HORLEY, SURREY RH9 8JR Lovely place - a traditional country pub about 300 years old with oak beams and lots of alcoves and a huge beer garden. A bit off the beaten track, though, as per report of our last visit on Beer In The Evening (reference tommo5) : www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/32/32531/Jolly_Farmer/HorleyMuch nearer to Blindley Heath than to Horley (its postal district)! The table has only been there for around 7 months according to the (friendly) landlord and is of the modern variety, a Supreme, as supplied for rental by the pub chain. However it plays superbly with a nice easy break and Margo and I had a 5k aggregate game on it. It does get played, mainly on Friday and Saturday nights, and long may it continue to do so.

Visited the Prince of Wales, Hammer Vale yesterday and only one of tommo's comments above turns out to be true: yes, it's in an out of the way place, but no the table isn't a jelkes and no it turns out it's a hybrid, rented through Sanders Pool Company. But what a great pub ! Wish it could be picked up and spirited back down into the Horsham area ! I spent the whole of yesterday afternoon there, enjoying the warmth of the log fire whilst in between several games devouring a scrumptious Bacon and Brie Baguette. The bar manager was really friendly too. The table........fluted edges to the legs suggesting that the frame is French, but the top is a good match and was surprisingly level apart from being a tad downhill. No trouble with the break or split, but ball sticking in the r.h.30 channel and the left-sided cushion was very flat. The rental people had been there to empty it recently, but perhaps not surprisingly had overlooked the loosened woodscrews holding the rack! However, a reasonable D in place, and loads of space, everything necessary to support bar billiards apart from being the only table in a 30 mile radius ! The table apparently does get a reasonable usage, mainly from local woodcutters (main trade in such a vicinity) and apparently a father and son are regular visitors for a game, but obviously there for the pleasure of the casual visitor only, nothing serious.

Curt Well, that seems to go with the territory, Curt: Non-League usually means no dedicated player with the required knowledge and willingness to look after it. Aside from that, how come there's no pubs in your League ? All your venues in Medway seem to be clubs !

The Bedford Tavern, Croydon, has replaced the bar billiards with darts, but have found evidence of two more in or around London: The Clarence, 53 Whitehall, Westminster, SW1A 2HP Golden Lion, Town End, Caterham-on-the-hill, Surrey CR3 5UG Golden Lion table would appear to have gone, according to this quote from Facebook:

Also, there is a table in the social club attached to the Aviva building (formerly friends provident) in Dorking near Denbies. It is however in very poor condition and totally unplayable in its current state. Thought it would be worth mentioning anyway in case it's of interest to anyone or as a possible league venue if a decent table was put in.

Probably the worst table I've ever played on. Curt Looked in on this one today as I was out Godalming way (car had a recall on the driver's airbag). Yes there's a table in a prominent postion in the bar. Bar staff very chatty and I was able to confirm the following: 1. Privately owned by the proprietor; 2. It's the same one that came down from the Pelton Arms, Greenwich; 3. It's the only b-b table for miles; 4. It gets regular use. On the down side: 1. It's a Narrow SAMS (has a Hubble Sports label, but that would be the operator's marque); 2. All pockets are sunken; 3. No leather D nor spots; 4. A massive rip in the cloth, more or less from the front of where the D should be, up to the object ball mark. This effectively divides the table in two, shots on the left have to be made from left of the rip, and all shots on the right from the right. Would be interested to know from Curt if this would match his expectations !

Hi Curt,
Thought you might be able to recognise it from it's defects !
Yes, definitely a narrow table, the 50 pockets are way down the table, a thick break for 50 and 30 being the natural shot.
Really hard work to score anything at all, the huge tear in the cloth not helping.
Has a "Hubble" plaque. From what you say it's possible that the landlord sold the Pelton table when he upped sticks, but wanted bar billiards for his new hostelry so bought a cheapo one on eBay.
It's the only one within a considerable radius of Goldalming/Guildford, and as long as people are prepared to come and play on it in whatever its condition he'll be getting his money's worth.
Rgds tommo

An update on the Hope, Carshalton (the only feasible narrow table within easy reach)..... Pub is on short hours and table will be covered up whilst the building is being expanded (swallowing up half the carpark). Work is expected to last for three months.
