Redhill League players featured heavily in the closing stages of both the World Singles and World Pairs Championships held in Jersey at the weekend.
The line-up for the 5th Round of Singles (last 16 left in) was 7 players from Sussex; 5 Jerseymen; 1 Guernseyman (who retained the title); 1 player from Hampshire - and 2 from Surrey who were Jason Wadsworth - and Geoff Jukes, who lost to the eventual winner Trevor Gallienne.
In the World Pairs Championship there were two Surrey faces in the Semi-finals, both with a playing partner from Oxford: Geoff Jukes and Dennis Atkins overcame Craig Carlson and Vinny Mitchell from Kent in the Quarter-final, but then succombed to Kevin Tunstall and Kevin Hall in the Semis. Meanwhile Gary Powell and playing partner Phil Collins beat strongly tipped Jersey Pair Steve Ahier and Graeme Le Monnier in the Quarters and father and son Alan and Michael Phillips, also from Jersey, in the Semis. This put them through to the final where the two Kevins eventually triumphed after a tense struggle. Kevin Hall himself (though entered from Sussex) is well known in Redhill circles as he plays for South Park CC B, and now finds himself a World Champion at the tender age of 23.
