Not a quiz, just a bit of trivia.
Came across this the other day, an account of the 1994 SCBBA One-Day Interleague, won for the first (and only ?) time by West-Sussex.
I bet not a lot of people knew that ! ;)
The write-up was from the pen of Steve Mariner.
In Group One, West-Sussex went into their third match with maximum points, but they were up against the mighty Brighton, who despite missing a regular player or two had started well by
beating Billingshurst 7-0, then seeing off Eastbourne (with Ease) 5-2.
The match was hard-fought, and with West-Sussex down 3 legs to 2, it was down to the experienced Dave Hampton and the fearless Ian Goulding to pull it off for the team; Dave doing the right thing and racking up 6800 - but more important, using up nearly 14 minutes to leave no chance of a comeback by Steve Mariner, his opponent.
In Ian's game he had to stand and watch as Terry Molloy put up a 6700 before missing and letting Ian on the table. With time to catch terry, Ian set about chasing the score. Missing the odd split or two on the way he just overtook as the bar dropped, and to everyone's surprise Ian missed an easy pot. Terry was back on the table with the balls in the tray and three hundred points to make up. he managed a couple of hundreds but missed out to let Ian back to the table to kill the game, much to the relief of his team mates.
In Group two, the experienced Horsham team had to win their third match against Mid sussex to make sure of a final place. Being 2-3 down they had the right two men left to do the business for them: veteran Sussex players John Slee and Peter Gibbs, both highly respected across Sussex. Their win not only put their team mates at ease, but also the Admin Desk, as if Mid Sussex had beaten Horsham, much adding of scores would have needed to be done (- Horsham coming through their group unbeaten.)
THE FINAL
The Draw was done and the tables decided, the first four legs were played and only Mark Brewster managed a win for West-Sussex. This didn't seem to rattle the three remaining West-Sussex players, Ian Goulding, Stuart Shurman and Dave Hampton. Dave surely had the hardest task of all - having to beat Peter Gibbs.
With chances for both sides, it was the West-Sussex lads who settled the best, all three coming through to take the cup for the West-Sussex League for the first-ever time.
With West-Sussex challenging Brighton for the Home and Away Inter-League title this season and with Ian Goulding and Mark Brewster on the verge of Sussex team selection, I wonder if the power in Bar Billiards is moving West ? We'll see.
