World Championships Report 2012
The 32nd World Championships proved to be as spectacular show of Bar Billiards as ever and those that attended were treated to many high scoring and close games.
148 players started the event on Saturday in 37 Groups of 4, with only the winner of each group guaranteed a place in the last 64; the remaining 27 to be made up of the ‘best runners-up’.
The majority of the world’s best players managed to navigate their groups thus setting up an enthralling last 64, to name just a few, Jim Millward; Kevin Tunstall; Bob King; Trevor Gallienne; Nigel Ryall; Paul Sainsbury & Phil Collins.
The round of ‘Last 32’ having 16 UK & 16 CI based players still in it produced especially high scores, with Trevor Gallienne (30,900); Graham Bisson (17,710); Ian Lelliott (17,740); Paul Sainsbury (22,760); Kevin Tunstall (18,110); Keith Vibert (16,640) & Bernie McCluskey (23,040) all progressing; with the unfortunate James Jeanne exiting with a massive 12,140.
The Last 16 filtered out the surprise names leaving the Quarter Final line up as one of the strongest the tournament has seen for a number of years. Graham Bisson v Nigel Senior; Paul Sainsbury v Jim Millward; Dennis Helleur v Kevin Tunstall; Bernie McCluskey v Bob King. With 2 or the 3 remaining Jersey players exiting it was left up to Bob King to fly the flag for the Channel Islands, drawing the ever ominous Kevin Tunstall in the Semi-Final.
The final however was to be between Kevin Tunstall & Paul Sainsbury, the latter knocking out some ‘small’ names along the way; Nigel Senior (Semi Final), Jim Millward (Quarter Final) & Phil Collins (Last 16). Kevin won the ‘roll’ 5 to 4 and placed Paul in, who knocked in 15,440. A score recently associated with the winner of the event, however, Kevin, being Kevin, would not give up and in the second game replied with 17,620 before touching up and regaining the title for the 2nd time in succession and 5th time overall.
In the Plate final we had the evergreen Brian Richards facing another Sainsbury, this time Peter. Brian an unexpected finalist held his nerve and took the final 6,020 to 4,430.
The Junior final was between Amber Hopwood and Jazz Mariner, Amber taking it 2,390 to 1,960
Preceding all of this on the Friday was the Doubles tournament, once again a full complement of 64 pairs. With the Quarter and Semi Finals being played on the Saturday and the Final before lunch on Sunday the event became well and truly integrated into the weekend. The 2012 final was played between Leon Beer/Phil Collins & Gareth Lloyd/Richard Wooton, the latter taking the match 7,970 to 1,650 and their first major trophy in the Channel Islands.
A full posting of the scores is available on the Jersey website (www.jerseybarbilliardleague.co.uk)
Finally, the 2013 tournament will again be held at the Merton Hotel on the weekend of 8th, 9th & 10th November. The entry forms becoming available from early June.
