Entry form is on the AEBBA site. www.aebba.org.uk/Entry%20Forms/Bournemouth2013.pdfThis has all broken rather quickly late this afernoon and I've rushed it out rather quickly prior to peddling eight miles to my match! Apologies for any 'misteaks'. The closing dates will be rigorously applied and entries displayed in a members only board to preserve anonimity. Sav

I got 'Captain Slapped' - just before we left for our match, Dave had handed me two entry forms - one for the new off the spot open and one for Oxford to take along monday night for our team to enter their names onto should they wish.(Dave had put his name on already). I put them down on the kitchen worktop so i could put my coat on,(then unrealized by me - Dave then placed them next to the scorebook, and also put his post there to post on the way. I put the score boo in my pocket and picked up the 'batch' and we left, at the post box i got out of the car and jogged to post box and popped in the post.(a van was being a nuisance and in the way so we had to go along the road a bit). On arriving at the Laughing Fish, Dave asked me for the entry forms - to which I searched my pockets and replied I don't have them - you had them. He then told me he had put them with the post and score book........... at which point I realized where they had ended up. :-[ :-X :-/ so, dear mr post box emptier - if you find two pieces of paper with entry form at the top and BBWarrior's details on them, please deliver them to us........ ::) or, Dear Mr Pete Ewins, should you get a notification of non-delivery and have to pay to retrieve your post - ie a piece of paper not in an envelope which is the entry form for the oxford open 2013 - please let us know and I will re-imburse you. :-* also.... Dear Mr Pete Sainsbury....should you get a notification of non-delivery and have to pay to retrieve your post - ie a piece of paper not in an envelope which is the entry form for the new off the spot open 2013 - please let us know and I will re-imburse you. :-* sorry honey, looks like I might be sacked let alone slapped..... :-/ :'( ;)

As you will probably all guess, Colleen did get a bit (okay, a lot!) of stick for this on Monday night.... Yes indeed.... I got 'Captain Slapped' - just before we left for our match, Dave had handed me two entry forms - one for the new off the spot open and one for Oxford to take along monday night for our team to enter their names onto should they wish.(Dave had put his name on already). He then told me he had put them with the post and score book........... at which point I realized where they had ended up. :-[ :-X :-/ so, dear mr post box emptier - if you find two pieces of paper with entry form at the top and BBWarrior's details on them, please deliver them to us........ ::) .... the postman has not returned them to us, so I expect that they are either making their way (very slowly) to the organisers (sorry guys if you have to pay for postage) or they will end up as "lost somewhere in the postal abyss".... ::) Having spent much time laughing about what Colleen had done, I carefully printed out some new entry forms last night and took them along to our match to see who else wanted to enter either the Oxon Open or the New Off-the-Spot competition.... only to then forget all about them during the course of the match and leave them behind at the pub at the end of the evening!! :o ::) :-[ Sometimes I wonder how we ever manage to make it to an Open.... luckily BigTJ is going to sort out the entry forms for the Bournemouth Competition for us so the organisers for that can be reassured that it will be done properly!! 8-) ;D ;D ;D

Hi All,
Sadly.... especially in the light of the excellent efforts of the new organisers.... it would appear that there will be a drop of more than 20% in the number of entries this year based on the current number of entries and the closing date being tomorrow. :'(
There has been a list posted elsewhere showing the people that entered last year but are not playing this year, I am sure that they all have very good reasons for not be able to attend.... I would guess that most of them would probably say either financial reasons or other, more important, commitments such as work or family. ;)
Personally, if I were one of the organisers, I would probably want to try to find out why those people aren't returning this year, as it may give a better indication of what needs to be changed to make this competition successful in the future.... ? ::)
During the past 6 years, the numbers for this competition have been in a steady decline...
2008 - 83 pairs 2009 - 67 pairs 2010 - 64 pairs 2011 - 53 pairs 2012 - 54 pairs 2013 - 45 now 47 pairs (with one day left before closing date)
Looking at those figures.... and trying to be realistic (rather than negative) about the future.... have we reached the stage where this competition can no longer justify being based over a whole weekend, which obviously costs all of the players a lot more than being played as a "One Day" Competition? Sadly, I think not. ::)
We regularly have 80 (or more) people turn up for some of the Open Competitions and these are played on one day, so clearly it would be possible to play a similar number of doubles matches in the same time frame.
Yes, we would lose out on the "social aspect" that is special at Bournemouth and I know that a number of players enter the competition as much for that reason as for actually playing.... but how long will that be able to continue anyway if the numbers decline.
I know that the organisers have already said that they will be looking at options for next year and I am sure that they will give a lot of thought to this, but perhaps the time has come to either switch the competition to a One Day event or run an additional competition (perhaps the National Off the Spot?) alongside the Pairs to see if that would bring more entries in and help to make the weekend more successful?
I would be interested to hear the views of other players about this..... ;)

The point you make about 80 players regularly playing in the other opens, what you have to realise is that 45 pairs entries is 90 players.... I agree that maybe the off-the-spot competition could be played on this weekend also. I know that it is not ideal, but something has to change.

Yes, but only the same number of matches as there would be for 45 singles players..... until the semi-finals when they become 4 legs in doubles. ;) EDIT - I note that there are now 47 entries for the Pairs, but that would still only involve a schedule for a first round of 64 so easily played on 8 tables in a day. ;D

Another point is that, looking at the entries for the Bomo pairs, if the competition became "just another Open' and less of a social weekend then you would lose quite a lot of the pairs that DO enter regularly. Swings and roundabouts....

With the shortage of numbers and it being run over a whole weekend, I think it would be great if we could run a singles competition as well like Jersey.
Just a thought ??? ;D

I agree that making Bournmouth a "Jersey and Gurnsey" like weekend would attract more people to attend. Then again that would leave less time for the social aspect and that was always a big focus for some people.
Maybe a happy medium can be stuck?

I will miss Bournemouth pairs this year due to my silliness. It is a shame but to be honest after the nasty text messagesi have been receiving which could only be from a committee member it has left such a bad taste in my mouth I am seriously thinking about entering anything. I have always supported this event and encouraged lots of players. I have already had 10 people say they weren't going this year because of my ban which to be honest I told them to crack on and go. Even though I am extremely upset about things that have been said it would be a real shame to see the comp end as it is always a fab weekend. Well done Chris and Chris for taking over x I asked if I could attend and not play as that would have brought more players and supporters but unfortunately never received a reply so assumed not. Anyways have fun and good luck to all as always.

if you go to prison for a year ,you are out in six months.for silliness you have to do a whole year.im sure Michele is sorry for what she has done and learnt a lesson not to do it again.and if a committee member has been sending horrible text, then letting her play this year might teach him/her a lesson.

I have canvassed opinions from the other AEBBA committee members after receiving the approach from Michelle whilst waiting for a broke plane in Jersey (deep joy).
I have replies from all bar one and we are happy to respond positively to Michelle's request to stay at the Queens, but without playing. I have given her until tomorrow to decide as bookings should now be closed.
If she decides to go then, pending receiving payment by the normal deadline, a room will be booked for her.
If any of the 'ten' people who will go if Michelle goes wish to attend, then they have until tomorrow lunchtime to let me know as well.
Sav as AEBBA Treasurer.

Just a thought.... and assuming that the Bournemouth Pairs will continue to be played over a whole weekend (to retain the social side of the event) rather than as a "One Day" Competition.... perhaps the organisers would consider taking a leaf out of Jersey's book and turn the early Rounds into a Round Robin Competetion in Groups of 4 pairs on the Saturday. :D
We could then have a live draw on Saturday evening with the the top 16 (or 32, depending on level of entries) Pairs going into the Main Competition and the remainder going into the Plate, with those matches played on a knock-out basis on the Sunday.... that would give everybody more games and could add a bit more excitement to the whole weekend. 8-)
I would welcome the thoughts of others on this suggestion.... positive or negative. ;D

The top players will always rise to the top in a Round Robin event, just look at last years Jersey Singles as every top ranked player got through to the Knock Out stages............ :-[ ;) Best left alone for the time being in my opinion. I'll make a couple of points to this discussion as a few good things have been raised.
Bournemouth has always (or at least used too) relied on the "social" aspect of the weekend. Even when the numbers were high, there was plenty of time for messing around, drinking and dancing etc. That lead to a lot of people going in "groups"
I remember Michelle herself used to organize a mini bus to drive people down there, and handle all the room bookings etc. That made me go the first couple of times, and indeed a few other people who would not have gone otherwise. I remember my partner for the first year I went had never even played a league game before. But we both went because it would be "a fun weekend".
If "groups" of people stop going, then that may be one of the reasons for the decline in numbers. Maybe the weekend has been over-relent of the social aspect? I'm not saying that's what the problem is, but it's defiantly something worth considering.
My second point is this. There are 3 "weekend events" in Bar Billiards which require hotels etc. Jersey, Guernsey and Bournemouth. Both Jersey and Guernsey run a singles and doubles comp (at least I believe they do) yet Bournemouth does not. I believe we need to supply more play time for a full weekend, whether it be in the form of a second tournament or as Warrior suggested a group stage before going onto a knockout. That would certainly make me more likely to attend.
Just a couple of thoughts to throw out there.

I can think of a few people who could be paired together and would make for a very interesting (non) sociable event............. ??? :P ....and there's me thinking that you liked partnering Alan O ;D ;) milko :-/
