I am sad to report that John Beck, who was a well known Guernsey Bar Billiards league player for many years, died on Sunday, aged 65. His longstanding team Rohais, playing alongside Bob Chapple, Terry Kenny and others, were a force to be reckoned with for a long time, competing with great rivals Baulkliners. John was also a regular Island player and a tough opponent to beat. After a spell of illness, he settled in Spain for a while, only to return to Guernsey again later. He made a brief comeback a few seasons back, playing for the Layabouts and showing some of the skills he used to display on a regular basis. He capped that season off with an amazing run in The Guernsey Open at The Wayside Cheer, finishing runner up to Kevin Tunstall. Playing with a short practice cue he just picked up from the side of one of the tables, players from England were amazed to see the progress of someone they had not heard of and was not then in the current ranking systems. One of the old time Guernsey "greats" of yesteryear, he was always happy when he was winning, especially against a Jersey opponent ;D

Sad news indeed, I only met John once at the 2010 Guernsey Open and was stunned when he used an old practice cue from the side of the table at the Wayside Cheer and promptly went to the match table and beat Steven Sheard in the first round and then carried on to the final before losing to SirKT.... :o Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time. I am reliably informed by Bob Le Moignan (Mr Statistics) that John Beck was Guernsey Singles Champion on four occasions. He went on to win the Channel Islands singles Championship on three occasions.
