All,
Just an update on the entries:
Juniors: 1 Singles: 80 Pairs: 43 (only 21 places left)
Also, I'm yet to hear on the empty envelope (above), can you all ask around as I wouldn't want a player turning up from the UK and find they aren't in the draw.
Cheers all - 45 days to go.

Thumbs up changes to a thumbs down, they have just called me back saying that they've mis-quoted me and need an extra £55.00 its still cheap but its the principle of the matter, they've offered alternative accomodation for that price, Mayfair Hotel or they will cancel without charging me a cancellation fee (good of them), she is calling me back in the morning with any other hotels.
Is anyone else staying at the Mayfair? and if so what is it like? how far to stagger? and what's the car parking like?

Hi Bernie, The Mayfair is around the corner from where I live (3 Star). Reasonable hotel, nothing over fancy but it is a nice place to get your head down. Closer to town if you did want to venture that way and about a 5-8 minute walk (at my speed) to the Merton. Car-parking reasonable as has its on carpark. The website is: www.modernhotels.com/Mayfair-Hotel/If you are definitely coming then can you confirm your doubles partner (if any) and wiz the entry forms through to me. Cheers Sean

I shall definately be coming Sean, just holding out with this deal, they quoted me by email, then when I phoned to book she quoted me the same and took my money, 10 minutes later she phoned me to say that they had made a mistake.... now in my case if I make a mistake and misquote a customer I honour my quote, all I'm asking is that they meet me partway. Not sure what my legal rights are!! they've taken my money and given me a confirmed booking reference..... Re pairs... I'm thinking of changing my name to AN Other, good chance of getting a decent doubles partner then

Aside from one year (1999) when the weekend sailings were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and my money was refunded in full, I have encountered similar to you Bernie just the once in my 14 "Jerseys": .....all booked up and ready to go, pleased with my deal - and then a phonecall to say they had forgotten the single room supplement and could they have another thirty quid (= a lot of money back in the 1990s).
Like you I was disgusted as there was a principle involved, and cancelled and asked for my money back but they kept my deposit of £10.
No problems so far in the 21st century booking with CondorFerries direct or their agency Travelsmith - always get a super deal.
Hope you get sorted.

Without wanting to interfere, and I am sure discussions are already taking place, would/will the organisers consider reviewing the format of groups of four, due to the reduced number of entries into the singles ? I personally like the format, however it could be deemed as a bit of a 'seeding' system by some, to ensure the big scorers get through to the later rounds. Some lesser players may get a good win against a higher ranked player in their group, but have a low score. This could go against them if they end up equal on points in the group with that 'name' player, but with a lower overall total score over 3 games, they could loose the chance to progress.
If they would have beaten that higher ranked player in any normal format, they would have gone through into the following round.

Apologies Stormin but far to late to change the format this year. Progress is firstly made on points (2 for a win, 1 for a draw) so beating a 'better' opponent will automatically give them the advantage as they would have two points more and a better chance of progression. If that player is then unable to get results against the remaining two players then would they really deserve to go through? Discussion will of course potentially get heated as everyone has their opinion and you will never satisfy everyone - it would be a really boring world if you could!
Groups are decided via the following order: Points/Average/Highest Score/Head to Head/Toss if a Coin
Entrants are also on schedule to also meet last years numbers, currently, with one week remaining I'm approximately 20 singles down but am still waiting on at least another 10 to arrive, this would make only 2/3 groups less than 2012.
Unfortunately, the tournament to be 'hit' appears to be the Doubles as it looks like the first year that we won't fill all the spaces (after such a bright start as well).
Singles: 129 Pair: 53 Juniors: 1
Cheers Sean

Thanks for the reply Sean. Even though I knew most of this, it will give any debutantes to the tournament a feel of the qualifying credentials on how to progress out of the group stages. During the first year's tournament when the new format was implemented, I was one of the unfortunate ones who finished second in my group of four, but failed to get to the next stage. Obviously again this year, depending on the number of groups of four that have entered, any of the least points scoring second placed players in all of the groups could possibly fail to progress into the subsequent knockout round.

Just to clarify, the second places are not decided on total score but average score - this is in place to avoid any potential group of 3's which may result due to people not signing in on time. It doesn't then disadvantage the 3 remaining players chances of progressing as they also automatically get 3 points each for the person pulling out.
Of course, a full explanation of qualifying will be given prior to the start of each group of 12 games.
