Our league starts a week today on 8/10/13 Breakaways playing from the Rangers Club have morphed into two teams with the original sounding names of Breakaways A & Breakaways B. Not sure which team is supposed to be the strongest, only time will tell......

8/10/13 Layabouts 4 - Breakaways A 1 Encouraging to see a couple of new faces to Bar Billiards and well done to Champs for getting a team together at short notice. Two debutantes and Shaun Lihou, who has played a few times before, made up the Rangers team with regulars Gary Naftel and Ian Champion. It was good to see the away team entering into the spirit of the evening with a good sense of humour and taking full advantage of the bar prices, five pints for just over £11 went down well, on several occasions Norman Wilkinson 2900 Shaun Lihou 130 Shaun isn't exactly new to the game, having attended the Sussex Open and having played as a reserve for the Breakaways. knows where the break is and showed some good touches in practice. However could not keep it together in the game. Scored over 1,000, but black pegged near the end. Shaun is attending the Worlds in Jersey in a few weeks time, which will give him a lot more experience. Terry Girard 1140 Niall Bougourd (0) BP Good first win of the season for El Tel, who struggled at first with a lot of balls on the table, that were difficult to clear. But a win is win ! Ben Wilding 4310 Chris Lancaster (0)BP Ben played well all game and kept nearly all of his breaks. Still multitasking playing pool on the same night. Was very unlucky not to make the 5K, loosing 800 when the bar had dropped. Mat Ogier 4240 Gary Naftel 920 Mat struggled during the first half of the match, and could not get anything down. But rallied after about 8 minutes and put together a good break to take charge. Paul Dyer 4580 Ian Champion 5290 Determined to save the whitewash, Champs started off at his usual methodical pace, staying on the table for about 5 minutes. Didi got the break back eventually, but unusually left both balls up. Champs got some more score, then Didi got the break back, only to leave two balls up for the second time On the third occasion Didi got the break, there was not quite the time to overhaul Champs score, and he rued the chances he had missed. Still, 4 points, playing against the opening breaks in the first league match of season is not a bad start

Breakaways B finally make their debut in the league with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Layabouts
Julian Cauvain a late addition to the breakaways team (basically found him at the bar) started off well with a narrow victory putting the last ball in the 200 too win against the far more experienced Paul Dyer.
Geoff Ogier after a small break from billiards managed a win against Terry Girard.
Norman Wilkinson then Managed Layabouts only point in a narrow victory over another new player Matt Wilcox.
Roy Le Page and Darren Ogier then scored victories against the father son Combination of Matt Ogier and Ben Wilding respectively.

Does not tell the full story as the only narrow victory was in the game Roy Le Page v Mat Ogier who lost by just 180 points. I won by nearly 1000 !

22nd October 2013 Giants 3 - Layabouts 2
Tom Oliver 4020 Terry Girard 3940 Tom just edged this one and it was a shame there had to be a looser and Tel put up a good battle against the ever consistent Tom who always manages to get the timing right - well he is a watchmaker
John van Katwyck 4680 Norman Wilkinson 3420 A wasted opening break proved my undoing and John showed the form that won him all those games last season. A late break for me made the difference a bit more respectable, but it was too little too late.
Luke Oliver 2950 Ben Wilding 1650 The two nippers battled it out in a very scrappy game. Took Luke a while to settle, but when he did there was only going to be one winner. 3-0 down, Layabouts were getting thrashed !
Terry Kenny 1200 Paul Dyer 9510 Having played two and lost two, Didi the Guernsey individual champion was a man on a mission. This week he bowed to pressure from his team mates and kept his opening 9500 break, otherwise he would have been in the dog house.
Bob Le Moignan 2300 Mat Ogier 4960 Mat got a second point for us with a confident performance, having avoided being struck by lightning during his walk from town to the Fontaine in a thunderstorm.

Better late than never with this first report. 29th October 2013 - Layabouts 4 - Fontaine 1 The Fontaine team came into this game on a high, having previously whitewashed a deflated Breakaways team which included Gary Naftel and Ian Champion. Mat Ogier 6360 Nik Ogier 3440 Nik started off confidently with just over 3,000 however this would not phase Mat who went on to win convincingly. Paul Dyer 10,500 Paul Mason 1,330 Didi took control in a match filled with banter between the two as usual. Scoring over 10,000 for the third time this season, he made sure he kept it this time again Terry Girard 7,810 Dave de Jersey 1,840 Tel put in the performance he is always capable of, to see off his opponent in true style Norman Wilkinson 230 Bob Chapple 13,440 Bob, playing the split broke off with over 10,000, and never looked like making a mistake, to rack up the highest score of the season to date. Ben Wilding 830 Little Legs 770 A game of two halves - both shocking with 150 being the average break and pegs galore ! Ben just edged it with a last ball finish after two attempts by both players

4th November 2013 Baulkliners 2 Layabouts 3 Played the day before Guy Fawkes night, I expect a cue or two may have ended up on the bonfire from two of the reigning league champions Mat Ogier 3,460 Pete Sanders 9,250 An early peg in his opening break attempt was Mat's big mistake. Pete showed what a great player he is and built a commanding lead with just over 9,000 before calmly touching. Mat got the break back and banged in a rapid 3K reply, but the game was already in the bag for the defending champions. Good job we are not sending him to Jersey as he could do some damage over there. Norman Wilkinson 6,170 Barry Osbourne 5,020 I led with over half the game gone and zero points to Ozzy. But when he got the break back, I thought it was perfect timing for him, as he passed my 4,800 score. Only to break down when he reached 5,020. I accepted the opportunity to get back on the table, and sneaked a closely fought game. Ben Wilding 830 Rodney Smith 200 Rodders went into this match undefeated and for 18 minutes it looked as he would win again with a canny performance with no fireworks. However after the bar had dropped he played a trick or treat shot, missing a ball on the back cush. the cue ball bouncing off three cushions, and coming back to just about topple the black Ben accepted the point gracefully, this his second win on the trot with under 850 scored all game. Andrew Rundle 130 Paul Dyer 15,340 On this lightning quick top there is no stopping Didi when he is flowing, and former team mate Andy could do little but watch a master at work. Banging in the highest score of the season to date, just 500 short of his total on that table two seasons ago, he took the win and the three points for the Layabouts. Only one point separates the top three teams; Giants 15 Baulkliners 15 Layabouts 14 Bob Chapple 4 wins out of 4 played - Trevor Gallienne 5 wins out of 5 played.

Breakaway B played their A team and come out 3-2 winners.
Full scores to follow. The draw wasn't kind to the new players with all the newbies having to play far more experience players.
Game 1
Paul Le Gallez gives the A team a good start with a nervous victory over Pete Wilson, Pete having been around as a reserve for a couple of years is starting to show some improvement by playing on a more regular basis, Being in the lead for about 12 minutes of the Game, Paul was becoming nervous and with the banter growing this was not helping however paul sneaked ahead to win by about a 1,000.
Next up
Ian Champion beats Matt WIlcox
Matt started off well but made a small mistake to allow The A teams best player in, Ian took no mercy smashing in just over 5k to destroy any hope for Matt. Matt plodded away though and showed that it will not be long before he starts taking some wins from some of the more experienced players.
2-0 down the B team were up against it but with have their experienced players to come there was hope to swing the result in their favour, Roy Le page played his steady game and pushed on to beat Chris Lancaster. Chris enthusiasm for the game will bare its fruits in time.
The 4th game was always going to be the critical match with Island Player Gary Naftel for the A team and former Island Player Geoff Ogier (returning to the game after a short break) meeting. This was always going to be tight and for much of the game it was, With Geoff taking the early advantage before missing and allowing Gary his chance to show why he is one of the islands best. Gary came back well and the pressure was on. But a small error allowed Geoff to take an easy victory.
Now the pressure was on Me to give the B team the victory over their stable mates. Its been called banter and in cricket i think its sledging but all i could describe it as was an absolute verbal onslaught. with every shot there was the scream of abuse with the Marker trying every trick in the book to put off his former team mate. However i managed to keep the stone face and set about the job at hand. score 1000, let newbie Niall Bougourd have a few shots. score another 1000 and do the same again. after getting to the 5000 mark the abuse subsided. Niall then managed to play a bit and showed some good play before knocking over the black peg. With only a few minutes remaining i managed to play to the finish and give the B team their second team victory of the season.

Guernsey six-a-side Team Knockout, 1st Round 12th November 2013 Layabouts 3 Baulkliners 3 (Layabouts win on aggregate scores) *indicates break games - Neutral venue - Played at The Rangers Club Seven players that took part in the Jersey competition were in action during this enthralling contest. Six being affected by severe Aurigny lag and from having to take on more fuel + G.S.T. at the bar, suffering an unexpected 24 hours extra stay in our beloved sister Island due to the fog. It was only Andy Rundle who was lucky enough to get home on the Monday as he had taken his car and booked on the boat with a sensible return trip on the Monday morning. Ben Wilding 870* Rod Smith 4,700 Rodders was not going to gift young Ben with another last shot black like he did the previous week, and the experienced old plodder got the league champions and holders off to the perfect start. Norman Wilkinson 4,360 Barry Osbourne 4,860* Out to gain revenge from the previous week's encounter, Ozzy made his opening break count and was not missing much. I got the break back and put in a good effort to catch up, only to let him back on the table with a minute left. 2-0 down it was not looking good - Time to bring on the big guns Paul Dyer 13,930* Trevor Gallienne 100 Yes Trevor only 100 - do not adjust your computer screens Diddi re discovered the form he had left at home and did not take over to Jersey. Despite having three or four shots in between Diddi's breaks, Trev was 'not at the races' unusually and we built up an excellent aggregate lead that proved to be invaluable later on. Top performance from our Island champion Larry Bearder 2,870 Pete Sanders 5,030* Drafted in as a last minute Supersub once again, veteran Larry helped us out as Julian Webb was probably knackered after helping with Donna's paper round a day longer than expected. No stamina these nippers Larry kept the amount of score difference down as much as he could, showing a few good touches despite being a bit rusty. Layabouts now 1-3 down and we could not loose another game. Mat Ogier 4,110* Andrew Rundle 3,130 Andy has now set an incredible Guernsey record, unlikely to be ever surpassed Loosing to three former team mates in three separate competitions in the space of a week, in the form of Diddi last week in the league, Terry G in the Jersey Open and Mat in the knockout this evening. Each player having their chances, it was Mat who took them. Andy's season has not yet started yet, and I am sure better results will follow later in the season Terry Girard 3,670 Peter Webb 1,300* Playing against the break, albeit versus their weakest payer, the job still had to be done. Another confident and vital win for El Tel. Peter did not play a lot last season and lacked the form he is capable of. But he is still only the second Guernsey player to reach a Jersey Open final, and a still a Baulkliner's legend. So Layabouts got one over the old enemy who have often stuffed us in this competition in the final and it was good to get our revenge for a change.

Matt Ogier and Trevor Gallienne given walk overs
Roy Le Page, Darren Ogier, Bob Le Moigna and Paul Mason all progress.
Champs and Gary are due to rearrange their match
La Fonataine Lose 3-2 to The Breakaways B team.
Breakaways B find a new star in Sam Crawford. Short of a player find someone sitting in the bar. Friend of Nick Ogier and gets drawn against him. Nick started with high hopes however these were soon dashed as we could of found a new star. Sam securing a good 1800 break in his first ever game.
Davey Little legs makes it 1-1 with a comfortable win over Pete Wilson
Bob Chapple take the fontaine into the lead as he beats Roy Le Page in an interesting Game. Both players had plenty of chances to build a score and in particular Roy missed at least 3 good chances. Bob though managed to make the most of one of his chances putting in a 5k break.
leaving the 2 Ogier to bring the score back into the Breakaways advantage. Darren up first narrowly beat Paul Mason. After only a small opening break on a tricky table. Paul though was unable to take advantage and i took the game to 2-2.
Geoff Ogier then managed to beat Dave de Jersey in a straight forward victory while Daves team mates provided him with plenty of encouragement

Recent results; 3rd December 2013, League. Giants 2 Breakaways A 3 - Highest score Luke Oliver (Giants) 6,100 Baulkliners 5 La Fontaine 0 - Highest score Trevor Gallienne (Baulkliners) 10,750 Layabouts 4 Breakaways B 1 - Highest score Roy Le Page (Breakaways B) 6,600 10th December 2013, League. Layabouts 4 Giants 1 - Highest Score Terry Kenny (Giants) 6,600 Layabouts have had an excellent run of form recently, scoring 8 points out of a possible 10 against the break in home matches. Last evening we defeated the team above us in the league to go clear second with a match in hand, 5 points behind the leaders Baulkliners. Mat Ogier 3650 Bob Le Moignan 2230 A tense game with Mat always looking favourite, however he left it late to show the form he is capable of, Bob losing his place at top of the Handicap league after this match. Norman Wilkinson 4600 John van Katwyk 0 (BP) Looking for a swift pay back from a defeat earlier this season, I had to put in a good reply to John's opening 2000 break. I stayed on long enough to put in just over 4000 and John ran out of time to catch up, after some messing around at the bottom of the table from both players, his break back ran out of time and he went for the 200, knowing he had already lost. Revenge is sweet Terry Girard 1490 Luke Oliver 560 Another tense and low scoring game, however Tel stuck to the task and the practice Luke + 3 others from his team had on the table the night before on the table proved to be a waste of time, with none of them hitting form except for Terry Kenny. Paul Dyer 4600 Tom Oliver 4340 Tom put in a solid performance and Diddy was looking like he was on the end of another rare defeat. However his rapid break building proved vital as he got close to Toms score, and put in a swift final break to pip Tom at the post, after some careful counting after the bar had dropped. Tom does not loose many per season and this was an important win for us. Ben Wilding 1070 Terry Kenny 6650 Kane saved the brush for the away team, Ben arriving late as usual after his Pool playing distractions

Layabouts 4 Breakaways A 1 A predictable easy win was made more interesting by the harmless banter from the usual suspects....... Some people prefer to let their cues do the talking Layabouts players listed first. Larry Bearder 1,470 N.Bougourd 800 Paul Dyer 2,950 C.Lancaster 370 Terry Girard 4,270 Paul Le Gallez 1,320 Ben Wilding 1,310 Ian Champion 6,370 Norman Wilkinson 7,160 Shaun Lihou 640 Mat Ogier v Gary Naftel - Not played as Gary conceded In the other semi-final Giants 3 Breakaways B 3 Giants go through to final on aggregate score.

The above quote I will not agree about being harmless banter as things got very personal between certain players, if only people had the balls and accepted they were out of order from certain said things bar billiards would be a much more enjoyable evening!!!! With 3 new players in my team and the conduct of a player in the above match we will most likely lose another team if not this season...next! I wish the layabouts best of luck in the final and hope this can be forgotten.

No league fixtures this week, so the Guernsey singles and pairs can be played. Mat Ogier and Terry Girard still flying the flag for Layabouts. Holder Paul Dyer was defeated in the first round on the tricky Bowl table by Jon van Katwyk. Trevor Gallienne, Ian Champion and Bob Chapple also still in the competition.

Two local Derbys see the two Breakaways teams facing each other at Rangers Club.

Underdog and in his first season Rangers B player Matt Wilcox gets a kinder draw than some, however Luke will start as favourite. It could be war in Ogier land if Mat overcomes Kane to face Darren Oge. Baulkliners team mates Trev and Sid face a tricky quarter final against one another. And another pair of team mates from Rangers A - Champs and Paul will do battle to claim a semi final spot.

21st January 2014 Layabouts 0 Baulkliners 5
An emphatic win over a subdued and sad Layabouts team, who did not take the chances they were given in three of the matches. Defending champions Baulkliners now firm favourites to hold on to the league title.
Terry Girard 1980 Pete Sanders 5980 Terry had his chances mid way through the game and there was a lot of scrappy play at the bottom of the table before Pete got the break back and took control building an uncatchable lead.
Ben Wilding 620 Barry Osbourne 8110 Not used to playing this early on, Ben still had a few Pool shots in his head, and Barry played very well, making very few mistakes.
Norman Wilkinson 1100 Trevor Gallienne 7530 The only shock was that Trevor lost his opening break, however I failed to keep going and left some balls at bottom of the table which Trevor cleared eventually. Making no mistake with his second break attempt running out the clock, he remains still undefeated in the league this season.
Mat Ogier 450 Andy Rundle 8,850 Andy got his own back after 3 straight defeats from his former team mates. A slow 7,000 + opener with some flukey banana skin slippery shots left Mat with no chance and no time for a come back.
Paul Dyer 1570 Rodney Smith 6480 Yet again in the match, the home player had an early chance they failed to take, and the visiting team player regained the advantage to finish with a high scoring second break.

As Darren seems a little shy in putting the match report up, here are the stats for Breakaways B 0 Layabouts 5 Good win for the away team who come fighting back after a whitewash defeat the previous week.
R.Cowley 570 Paul Dyer 1900 Geoff Ogier 3770 Ben Wilding 3810 - The game of the night. With no pool match, Ben settled down and showed what he is capable of. Very close game, Geoff unlucky to loose. Ben sneaked it with a white down the 200 to finish. Darren Ogier 1660 Mat Ogier 4480 Roy Le Page 1650 Norman Wilkinson 3420 Mat Wilcox 80 Terry Girard 8040
A good night for Mat Ogier who went on to win a humdinger of an Island singles match of two legs v Terry Kenny, repeating the skill of his son by finishing with a 200 shot at the end to win.
