To be fair to the Merton, the fist time we held the tournament there some years ago, they used to email the people that had booked in, asking if they required Sunday lunch, and to pay in advance. At that stage it was difficult to say yes or no, so I did not decide to reply. You can not blame the hotel for taking bookings from Jersey residents in advance with a guarantee of filing the dining room up, rather than leaving it empty if the Bar Billiards contingent decide to go elsewhere. We were fortunate to get the last table for four and with hindsight should have booked earlier. You can not blame the Hotel for wanting money up front also for these bookings to prevent residents booking, then disappearing elsewhere in St Helier for a Sunday lunch.
