I beat Chris Turner 2-0 in the Captains Cup this evening, the match was played on Table 7 of the AEBBA set at the Hurst Club.... which played very nicely! I then beat Chris Haynes 2-0 in the quarter-final, this game was played on Table 6 at the Hurst Club, it seemed to make sense to play them both on the same night to save them another journey over. Many thanks to Bill who scored both games for us.

Colin is Playing Barney and Stewart is Playing Neil Tuesday 25th Feb
Colin opened with a hard fought slow 4k then things slowed down a bit, Paul's deficit increased a bit but a nice play out of the last 7 mins saw Paul home 6k to 5k Game 2 was a bit scrappy Paul opened with 2.5k, Colin found ways to come off and Paul kept scoring a few Paul took the 2nd game 5k to 4k going into the next round without too much worry
Stewart opened well in the 1st game with 2k Neil took the whole time to get used to the table leaving Stewart to win by 5k to 1k. Neil then returned the favour to Stewart in the following 2 games to win 2-1
Good hunting to both Paul and Neil in the next round

Colin, I don't know if you have booked the table at the Horse and Groom for tomorrow but you may have a problem because Man Utd are on terrestrial television and the set is straight above the table

Jean and Richard beat Ros and Marcus 2-1 in a very good Mixed Doubles match at Hassocks Hotel tonight. Ros and Marcus won the first game after Ros got them off to a steady start and then two good breaks from Marcus made sure with neither Jean or Richard getting the balls back. Ros & Marcus 11,300* - 350 Jean & Richard Jean opened with 1.5k but was first to get the break back and made a good 6k break to win the leg, Richard getting a few towards the end. Jean & Richard 9,130* - 1,970 Ros & Marcus Into the decider and Jean & Richard won the toss with Richard making a good break of 10,590 in just under 12 minutes. Marcus made a good start but had a nasty kick on the break and although he did get the balls back he missed soon afterwards to come off on 2,640. Plenty of people there to watch and score, giving us all a very enjoyable evening.

Hayley and I beat Nige and Chelle on a very good Brewers Arms top last night 2-1. The first game saw us take a 7880 lead, not quite enough because Nige caught us up on the bar. Fortunately for us it trapped the red ball and it meant they had to go behind the black, which Nige felled. 7880 - 0 Game 2 saw Chelle off early and it got quite scrappy up the top. Nige was the only one to retrieve the break and made a steady 5k for the leg. 570 - 7040 Nige won the toss and put us in, where I ran the table out for 19750. He was just ahead on the clock in the next but left one short of the hundred and consequently missed potting anything after making 7570. As I said earlier, an excellent table, worthy of any top match

Tone,
Can't reply to your email as it seems to be rejecting your email address (might be the set up on my new iphone but I can't reply with proper compooter either).
I'm fine for 20th but is Dave? I didn't see it on his list of available dates.
And where will it be?
Also any idea why Jean wants the trophy back? (KT texted me yesterday to say that she did). It is engraved and I could just bring it along on the 20th.

I would be okay to play on Tuesday 13th May. Jean normally has the trophies back to enable her to get them engraved with the winners, this avoids the problem of some winners names being "missed off" the trophy when the winner doesn't get this done, as has happened on occasions in previous years. The trophies are usually then presented on League Presentation Nights.

Over 50s was played at the Stout House last evening,on an interesting table, which at times looked as though the players had sorted but kept coming back to bite them.
In the first semi Dave Ingram won the toss and put Neil in and Neil soon found the table to be slow, and a roll in front of the left hand 50 caught him out and he was off early, Dave got balls back and left the one up short. Neil built 990 lead before Dave got the balls back with the bar due, Dave played the remaining balls out sinking the 100 to pinch it by 70
Dave started well in the second but left the one up short, Neil got them back and ran in a 7k break to make sure.
Dave won the toss in the decider and aware of the Rule being equal break and time set out a a good clip mastering the split until he put the one up behind at just over 3k. Neil pulled back the 3k but came off with the scores almost level. A battle at the top end of the table ensued until Neil got them back and made sure to win 2-1.
Paul Barnett won the toss and put Peter Payne in and it has got to be said out of all four players Peter could not settle on the top at all. Barney winning the first by a good margin, the second was closer but Peter still did not read the table, Paul running out a 2-0 winner.
In the final Paul won the first with a couple of good breaks. The second was a close encounter and went one way and then the other, when Neil got the balls back with time running out we thought it was all over but he left the one up short just before the bar dropped, Paul then seemed to be in control only yo leave both balls up with 44 balls left, Neil sunk three and the 100 to nick the 2nd.
In the decider Neil left his one up short Paul opened with 2k, added another, Neil did get balls back twice but left one up short on both occasions, so Paul went on to win 2-.
Well done to Paul, and thank you to all players for making an enjoyable evening. Thanks to Bill Kerr and Dave Ingram for helping with the scoring.
Captains cup being played to a finish next Monday at the Hassocks Hotel.
I believe the 2nd semi for the mixed being played either this or next weekend?? Then if final could be arranged promptly as there are ranking points for this which could effect masters. I think it best to leave the finalists to get together and arrange date and venue suitable, if I am available will come along and score.

Sandra & Kev beat Colleen & I 2-1 at the Hurst Club tonight, first two games could easily have gone either way and Kev made a winning 5k break towards the end of the decider to seal the win. Good luck to both pairs in the final.

The semi-finals and final of the Sussex Captains Cup were all played on a very good table at the Hassocks Hotel, here is a brief summary of what happened on the night:- Semi-Final 1 - Dave Ingram v Tony Jenner Tony won the toss and put me in, I touched on 10k with my opening break, Tony hit 3k in reply and I finished the game off. Dave 15.5k - Tony 3k. Tony off with about 3k on his opening break, I got the balls back but missed a split and came off but was first to get the balls back and made sure with a couple more breaks. Dave 11.3k - Tony 3.8k Semi-Final 2 - Phil Osborne v Henry Brooks Phil opened up a 4k lead and Henry was unable to get the break back, Phil added some more to make sure. Phil 9.2k - Henry 670. Henry opened with 1.4k, Phil got the break back but then black pegged and lost about 4k. Phil first to get the break back and knocked in 5.5k, Henry got the balls back and ran the table out, he missed a split after the bar had dropped and ended up needing the 200 hole to win, which he got at the second attempt. Phil 5.5k - Henry 5.6k. The drama continued in the decider with Henry off at around 2k and Phill off at 3k, Phil added some more but Henry then got the break back and started to look comfortable. The bar dropped with Henry on a break of about 5k, match won we all thought.... only for Henry to miscue his break shot and totally miss the ball. Game over. Phil 4k - Henry 2k. Final - Dave Ingram v Phil Osborne I won the toss and Phil opened with a steady 6.2k, I got the balls back but broke down on just under 7k, Phil finished the game off with 2k to take the first game. Dave 6.9k - Phil 8.4k I opened with 12.2k to give Phil no chance, he got the balls straight back and finished the game off. Dave 12.2k - Phil 4.2k. Phil won the toss in the decider and went first, he had a couple of adventures at the back of the table but recovered well each time and set me a target of 9,820 in 14 minutes as the equal time rule was in place. The time wasn't the problem and I was on my way when I left a split short of the 100 hole, I potted once off the side cushion but didn't improve the position and then sent both balls up the back, neither went in and Phil was a deserving winner on the night. Dave 3.3k - Phil 9,820. Congratulations to Phil on his win, a very enjoyable evening, plenty of good games and excitement on the night, many thanks to Bill, Tony and Bob for helping with the scoring and good to see Sandy make the long trip there from Hastings.

Congratulations to Phil on a very solid performance and a well deserved win! A very good table at the Hassocks Hotel I can't help but disagree with this comment in the way I found the table - however, as the scores show, and how everyone else played, I can't be right on this occasion. I would love someone to explain to me why I can't figure this particular table out and indeed what I was doing wrong with some fairly standard sensible shots - most confused... Dave?!!!
