The Layabouts are delighted to announce that a new team member will be joining us for the forthcoming Guernsey League 2014/15 season.
Only two of the founder members of the team play regularly, namely Paul Dyer and Mat Ogier, although Julian Webb helps out as Sub on occasions.
Both Mat and Paul have won the Guernsey individual singles title, a no mean feat given the quality opposition.
The team first played as The Lagerlouts at the now closed Public House The Dukes Arms and other team members in the early years included Billy Smith, Rodney Smith (Jnr) and Adrian Harvey.
The team then moved to the one time Bastion of Guernsey Bar Billiards - L'Auberge Divette, which at one stage entered 4 teams into the league when there were 2 divisions.
Finals nights and Internationals versus Jersey used to be played there, the place still exists, but now as a restaurant.
The team then moved to The Prince of Wales with L'Auberge landlord Dave Lane for two or three seasons, before re-locating to The Plough Inn when it was run by Martyn Dyer, brother of Paul.
The team currently plays at The Ex Service Club in Victoria Road, St Peter Port.
Terry Girard, Dave Le Cras and Norman Wilkinson who played together in a team at L'Auberge Divette joined forces with the younger team, with Norman and Terry still playing on a regular basis.
Over the years we have had several new and guest players, notably a former Channel Islands Champion, the late John Beck who made a big impact during two comeback years, the highlight being as a surprise runner up in The Guernsey Open, held at The Wayside Tavern.
Pete Lowe and Andrew Rundle who have both played for the Island team have also played for our team.
Ben Wilding, son of Mat has claimed a few notable scalps since he started playing and has managed to beat two former Channel Islands champions in league matches, namely Trevor Gallienne and Rodney Smith (Snr.)
Ben will be our sixth man this year and we are delighted to welcome on board a player you may have heard of -
Bob Chapple for the forthcoming season.
(*Please note this signing was discussed before he won the Guernsey Open !)
We look forward to an interesting season ahead with our new signing Bob and he has a lot to answer for. as it was him that first got me into the game back in circa 1976 when working together at Le Riches when we regularly used to go for a match Friday lunchtime at the Rohais Inn, and my first season as a player was in his team with his late father who was a former landlord of The Swan Inn, together with Big Paul and Norman Jackson.
