A good week for the Layabouts as they progressed to the final of the Six-a-side Knockout and took more points to maintain their league title challenge'
Six-a-side K.O. Played at Rangers Club * denotes opening break. Layabouts 3 Baulkliners 3 (Layabouts win on aggregate)
Paul Dyer* 8780 Pete Sanders 4090 Didi opened up with over 2000, but Pete broke back and it was very close until Didi got his head down and put in an uncatchable break. Great first game and the aggregate difference was to Layabouts advantage early on.
Terry Girard 2030 Rodney Smith* 1570 Useful win against the break for El Tel and although both players struggled on the table, it was Terry who made fewer mistakes and kept his scores.
Ben Wilding* 930 Ricky Guilmotto 1110 The two reserves slugged it out with a display of bizarre shots and multiple felled pegs. It was Ricky who held his nerve to get a point back for The Baulkliners.
Mat Ogier 4290 Trevor Gallienne* 5530 This was the best match of the night by a mile. Trevor opened up with a steady 4800 and was disappointed not to have scored more, the quirks of the table proving difficult as it did for everyone. Mat got the break back almost straight away and replied with a creditable 4000. But Trevor kept his nose in front, however the difference in scores was not a great as it could have been.
Bob Chapple* 5870 Andy Rundle 3200 Another great game as the two Island players slugged it out. Some unkind rolls and kicks by both players kept the scores close, and Andy looked as though he was going to catch Bob at one stage. But Bob hung on to give the Layabouts an even bigger lead.
Norman Wilkinson 0 Barry Osbourne* 3860 Barry needed to win by 6000 and it was a tall order. I scored then lost a couple of big breaks which took up some time, and managed to black a minute before the end, but Barry's win and score was not enough to catch up the aggregate deficit.
The Layabouts will now play holders Giants in a repeat of last year's final.

League match Layabouts 4 Breakaways B 1 played at Ex Service club - Breakaways had the opening breaks.
Terry Girard 2320 Peter Wilson 390 A kinder draw for Terry for a change. No fireworks or big scores, but an important win to start the evening off right. The table very slow at the bottom due to uneven floor.
Bob Chapple 12610 Geoff Ogier 0 (BP) Geoff manage a creditable opening 2000 break, but when Bob got on, he immediately got into his splitting break routine and put up over 5000. Geoff's heart was not in it from then on and Bob got back on with another confident 6000 break. Geoff frustrated and well beaten finished off with a 200 shot that took out the black.
Mat Ogier 3500 Mat Wilcox 2600 This game was quite close, and Mat O lost a big break due to a missed centre ball which would have made it easier for himself. But experience told in the end, which put the home team 3-0 up.
Norman Wilkinson 1700 Darren Ogier 4900 I just could not get the break back despite lots of attempts, Darren got the better of the table and me, claiming a much needed point for the away team.
Paul Dyer 6410 Roy Le Page 2310 After watching his beloved Arsenal, Didi had to re focus and put in a good performance against Roy who was desperate for the win.

congratulations to the Layabouts Can you know make it a double. We will be doing our best to, however The Giants are the holders of the six a side knockout and beat us in the final last season, so it should be a close one to call.

With the league title already decided, the three remaining league matches in the Guernsey league are only significant for pride and some of the Guernsey Masters places.
Champions Layabouts will play the former champions Baulkliners on the fast West Legion Table - Will Trevor's 19,080 season high score stay intact ? Breakaways host Fontaine at Rangers Club. And the following Tuesday will see Breakaways host Baulkliners in a re-arranged league game.

31st March 2015: Baulkliners 1 Layabouts 4 - played at The West Legion - Layabouts had the opening breaks; This match was academic, as Layabouts had already won the league BY 7 POINTS (have I already mentioned this ?) Ricky Guilmotto 0 Bob Chapple 15830 Bob opened up with just over 5,000, but the split was not going to plan as the table was colder than normal. Ricky their reserve was only on for a short time, loosing his score before Bob got back on and played the table out. Pete Sanders 0 Mat Ogier 12410 Mat having one of his best seasons for some time played superbly enough to record his first ever play out in a league match. Pete not even having chance of a consolation shot as Oggy finished on the 100. Rod Smith 1580 Norman Wilkinson 5650 A little more scrappy than the two previous matches, Rod failed to capitalise when I scored just over 1000 on my opening break. I regained my composure and built a lead that the leather jacketed one could not catch. Barry Osborne 4270 Paul Dyer 5680 Diddi did not keep his opening break and it looked like Ozzy was going to claw a point back for the home team. But Diddi made the most of a second chance when he got with the break back and just hung on at the end with an under hit touch shot that just about made contact with the ball next to a 50 pocket. Gasps of amazement echoed the room ! Trevor Gallienne 15400 Terry Girard 1550 Terry looked confident and was not scared of the opposition. But it took just one mistake to let Trevor on the table and he duly played the rest of the time out, just failing to get top score for the night. The Layabouts will play the Giants next week in the Six a Side final.

Flukey, There is no such thing. You need to learn that it takes skill to beat a player of Ian ability.
He is one of our Islands best players at the moment and i had to judge it to perfection when beating him on the last ball

Only one week to go until Guernsey Finals Night and presentation of trophies.
Tonight sees the final of the Six-a-side where the defending champions Giants will face the league winners Layabouts on the neutral West Legion Table.
Also another KEY match, the re-arranged outstanding league game where Baulkliners will try to access maximum points at The Rangers Club v Breakaways B. Baulkliners can not catch Giants for second place in the league, so only pride and a few minor Guernsey Masters places to contest.

The final League game of the season is done and dusted with a 3-2 victory against the breaks for the Breakaways
Game 1
I managed to beat Andy Rundle 3970 to zero. Andy started off slowly but managed to score 2900. I then missed and Andy scored another slow 2500 before hitting the peg and giving me the break back, Scoring 3970 i touched up with the bar gone. After a few shots and missing the 200 Andy smashed over the black peg with his cue. Pretty happy result for me. After losing my first 4 games to now finish 9th in the Island Rankings.
Game 2 Geoff Ogier beat Barry Osbourne in a poor match. Barry was leading with around 1800. Geoff could not doing anything on the table and even took out the black peg. It looked as though the games was beyond him before Barry black pegged and Geoff ran out winning 1700 to 550.
Game 3
Trevor beat Steve Carre ( another newish player) 5430 to 330. Trevor started off with a good 4700 before letting Steve in for a few shots. Steve is still learning the game and it was good to see Trevor ensure won but didn't humiliate Steve.
Game 4
Matt Wilcox lost to P sanders 1440 to 4160. This was not a good game as neither produced the play they had been accustomed too. Matt though was keen to keep the scores as close as possible and finish equal top of the handicap league. ( which he has done)
Game 5
Roy managed to win this one 3110 to zero. I slightly flattering scores as Rodney Smith knocked over the black peg with his last shot. This ensure roy remained as the top ranked Breakaways player of the year.
It was good to hear that all the Baulkliners intend to play in this years masters at the roquettes on Friday the 1st May

Guernsey Six-a-side Knockout Final played at West Legion Club 7th April 2015. Layabouts 3 Giants 3 (Layabouts won on Aggregate Scores) * Denotes opening break.
On a night of excellent competitive Bar Billiards, sadly there could only be one winner. Some superb games were well contested with some big performances. All matches went to the players with the opening breaks, and it was Layabouts who won the toss of a coin to choose and it looks like we made the right choices. Massive thanks go out to Ian Champion who gave up a night off to score and mark all six games. Layabouts complete the League and Cup Double.
Mat Ogier* 8620 Terry Kenny 2110 Mat kicked off with a very impressive and confident 7500 break and at one stage it looked like he was going play the table out like he did last week. Kane clawed back some precious points with over 2000.
Paul Dyer 2960 Tom Oliver* 4960 Tom managed to bring the tie back to 1-1 although his scoring rate was not as quick as some others, he still played well enough and deserved the win. Diddi got the break back with time to spare to catch Tom, however an over hit shot on the 50 pocket resulted in a spin out which gave the advantage back to Tom.
Bob Chapple* 17220 Luke Oliver 350 Bob played superbly in a defining match that gave the League Champions a massive points aggregate lead. First opening up with an impressive 7230 break which put Luke under a lot of pressure. Luke missed after a couple of shots, leaving Bob to quickly get the break back to play the rest of the table out with an even more amazing 9990, achieving the second highest score of the season 17220.
Ben Wilding 460 Jon van Katwyk* 6080 Ben has not had much table time as our reserve this year and it showed as he struggled with the pace of the table. Jon started off nervously, but soon settled, making up some of the aggregate deficit and bringing the match level at 2-2.
Norman Wilkinson* 4170 Bob Le Moignan 1430 No pressure then, as I had to keep the winning momentum going despite the aggregate lead, as two wins for the Giants would give them the match. I would not say that I was over confident and was pleased to open up with just over 3,000. The rest of the match was a bit 'cat and mouse' with me leaving most of the difficult balls to Bob and staying away from the black peg. Happy to win, but no big scores like my team mates.
Terry Girard 0 Karl Ogier* 13450 What a reserve player to have in your team ! Man of the match must go to Karl who emulated his brothers performance from the week before, playing the table out to level the match. Chasing a massive points deficit of 18,500 he did not give up and his highest ever score and best performance was greeted by a round of applause by all. This player should be playing every week !!
So the Layabouts get the spoils, but it was Guernsey Bar Billiards who are the winners with such a good display of talent. Now bring on the Inter Insular v Jersey. (And thanks again Champ - hope you slept well counting breaks not sheep.)

Finals night 14/04/15
Bob Chapple beats Ian Champion in the Final held at the fontaine. After Ian was unable to keep his small opening break the writing was on the wall as Bob managed to get the break back and put in a healthy lead with his break to come.
Bob dually did enough on his break to put pressure on Ian who after several attempts to get the break back conceded.
Bob had been a tad fortunate to get through to the final after scraping a win against Luke. Bob had put in a good score in his opening break and when at around 10k he missed the object ball and all scores were level. The game was very scrappy and very little in the scores with Luke break to come. With the final on Luke home table all expected the him to take the victory. He was unable to capatilise before Bob put in a late break to give the game some respectively.
Ian had reached the final after a tight finish against Andrew Rundle. With Ian having a 10k lead from the 1st Game Andrew pegged back the score and was only 500 points behind when the bar dropped. All Andrew had to do was pot 6 whites in the 50's while on the break and finish with the 200. However he was unable to and Ian progressed.
In The pairs final Trevor Gallienne and Barry Osbourne came from 2-0 down to beat Ian Champion and Gary Naftel.
Ian Set about the opening game with and ended with 10k lead. Barry was unable to utilise he break and Ian and Gary were able to capatilise and increase the aggregate score slightly. Trevor and Barry now 2-0 and with Gary break to come looked down the barrel. However the game was very scrappy and with just less than 10 mins to go neither had scored much before Trevor got the break back and scored 8500. This meant they were still alive and when Trevor Broke off with 10 and took the final on aggregate.
Island team announced as
Trevor Gallienne (c) Ian Champion Bob Chapple Roy le Page Paul Dyer Matt Ogier Luke Oliver (Reserve)

Slight correction to Oge excellent post, I won the toss and put Luke in first, Luke was off the table a lot earlier than I thought he would be, I got the break back and decided that when I reached 10k to tap up unfortunately a little short of my target I missed a ball between the 200 and 100. After dropping a further 10k plus in a couple of breaks I finally managed to keep a break of approx 5k to secure the match. Luke had chances but fortunately for me he was unable to manage his home table.

Sorry Bob I arrived a little late and I missed the start of the game. Also I wrote this with a cider head on this morning.
Congratulations. If I remember rightly last time you won this you were also the Channel Island Champion that year. In jersey I think

Good report Darren. I think you covered most things, but I will fill in a few gaps. The two Islands Singles semi finals were each fascinating matches for different reasons as was the final.
Luke Oliver v Bob Chapple. On paper, Bob started as favourite. But after loosing two big breaks in the first match he looked as shocked as the audience were. In the second leg with the break, he did not start off too well and it looked like there could be a shock on the cards. Eventually Bob realised he had to keep a break for a change and played safe when he had got his third big break.
Ian Champion v Andy Rundle I missed watching the first leg which left Champs with a nice looking 10,000 lead over his opponent. Champ had been a loosing semi finalist on many occasions and was determined and capable to make the final this year. Andrew had different ideas though and mounted a superb fight back timing it almost to perfection, but just failed on the last couple of shots.
The dream final Champs v Bob Chapple - Champ suffered an unintended double kiss during his opening break when he was going like a train, which took out a white peg. After that Bob did not make any mistakes and extended the lead he had built in the first game during his break game.
League Champions - Layabouts League Runners up - Giants Six-a-side Knockout Champions - Layabouts Six-a-side Knockout Runners Up - Giants
'Highest League Score' 19080 and 'Player of the Year' with most league wins - Played 15 won 14 - Trevor Gallienne (Island Captain)
Handicap Joint winners - Matt Wilcox, Ian Champion and Bob Chapple.
Thanks to the G.B.B.A. for the evening and Fontaine for the nibbles after.

After the Guernsey open I announced to my team mates that after 40 years of continuously playing in the Guernsey league it was time for a change. I will be taking a year out from the team, and it was good to go out on a high winning the league and knockout competition. Not that I needed the break, but perhaps everyone needs a break from me ! I will sign on as reserve for my old team to only play in times of desparate need. Not planning to go to the Open in Jersey in November either - only the third one I will have missed since the start. I will see how I feel at the start of next season. But for now its goodnight from me.

Hi Stormin'
Sometimes "a man has to do what a man has to do."
A year from now you'll feel completely refreshed and raring to go for the new season.
"You be sure of it!"

Sad to see Stormin' taking a break, it would have been good to defend the league title but can understand his reasons.
A few years back I retired for a season and a half and came back refreshed and stronger, hopefully Norm will be back next season also refreashed.
You'll be missed mate.
