Hi everyone,
I am trying to gather information about the indoor league of the 1970's (don't ask why...)
Does anyone know the full name of Taffy John, or any of the other players and whether they would still be alive?
I can't even find Vera Poberezhec and you wouldn't imagine there to be too many of them in Bradford.
Cheers,
Tom

Quite a bit of the background on Indoor League does exist on this site, but in the Members' Section. Some of the names thrown up - particularly on the later series - we can provide information on, and some are actually still playing ! Many have sadly passed on.
Taffy John, being from Pontefract, would have been associated with the South Yorks/Doncaster League, which was only in existence for half a dozen years or so in the 1970s/80s and details are very sketchy. * We would be better placed to advise on the competitors from Hertfordshire, Northants, Oxon, Bucks, Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent.
If you were to join the Forum we would be able to point you in the direction of which all this information exists !
Incidentally, there is now a revival of bar billiards in Yorkshire, with leagues springing up in York and Sheffield, but this is a whole new generation of players.
* As far as is known, neither Taffy nor any of the original competitors in Indoor League were actually League players. One would imagine that Yorkshire TV did a recruiting exercise from casual players found in pubs around the county and invited them to Leeds to play off for the right to be called Yorkshire TV champion.
Eventually All-England Bar Billiards expressed an interest and were invited to send along two champion players from each affiliated county. Stan Pratt beat Gerry Lambert to win the event the year after the same players had contested the All-England Final.

I assume it's not a coincidence that I have just received an email on the same subject from one "Ellis Lane" who professes to be a sports journalist.

I should also point out that the permissions were wrong on this board as guests should only be able to post in the non members area. I have corrected that an suggest that 'Tom' applies to join.

Analysis performed in the members area under "General Bar Billiards Matters" (thread : Indoor League"). So far we have 6 still around and 6 having passed on, but nothing is known of the Yorkshire names including Taffy John as as far as we can make out they were not part of any organised league.
