It's that time to start thinking about this year's summer league. The competition is growing steadily in numbers each year and we would very much like to continue this trend for 2015 - the sixth year of the competition.
“Off the Spot” is a format which has been used as an occasional winter competition by some leagues. It can be quite a leveler between different standards of player, and certainly forces different shots from the norm in some circumstances, but can still be treated as a “serious” contest whilst fun to play.
Proposal: • Teams can be any group of at least four players who can base themselves at one venue. There will be no registration of players, but there is an understanding that no player will play for more than one team during the season - in other words once you have played for a team you are registered for that team!
• All matches to be organized as follows: o Four singles games, and two doubles games o Home captain shall nominate their player(s) first o Away team to break in games two, four and six o ALL SHOTS TO BE PLAYED “OFF THE SPOT” o NO table or player handicaps o Normal refreshment catering!
• League points awarded as one point per game win with a bonus point two points for a match win, and one point for a draw
• Normal league and player stats will be collated and a trophy provided for the winners.
• The player stats will work on a ranking point system as follows - 2.0 points for a singles win, 1.0 point for a doubles win, and 0.5 for any win against the break.
We would like to invite ANY group of players from the Lewes, Brighton, or Mid-Sussex areas to register an interest. We will then put together a proposal for a league. In the event that more than seven teams show an interest, we will try to divide them into more than one division based as far as possible purely on geography to minimize travel distances.
If you think you may be interested, please contact me on h@laughingfishonline.co.uk, via this forum, in person, or phone the Laughing Fish on 01825 750349 as soon as possible, but no later than THE END OF MAY.
I will organise contact details and start and finish dates once I have an idea of the number of teams that are interested.
Cheers all
Henry

I am today going to work out the format for seven teams as I have had no further contact from anyone else. Should anyone still wish to enter, please do get hold of me as soon as possible. With eight or more teams, I will split the competition into two groups with a group then knockout format. If we stick with seven it will be a straight league with byes. I shall post more details once the format is organised.

I received an Eighth team entry last night which means all entries are now closed - there is no more space to accomodate any further teams without going well into the next winter season. Thankyou to everyone who has entered, there will be some updates on the format shortly...

Off the Spot Fixtures 2015.doc (20.5 KB) Please find attached the format and fixtures for the Summer League. A new two group format this year which was decided geographically. Everyone in the groups will then go on to a knockout stage for the "Main Competition" and "Plate" (this is purely terminology I am using for definition purposes - there is no physical plate seeing as this is a fun free competition). Player averages will be produced as normal. In the event of a tie in the final group tables, or in any of the knockout matches, the winner will be decided primarily by head to head team results (if applicable) or secondarily by total team score. I had considered introducing a seventh deciding leg (much like in the Watney Mann), but this would make for a late evening which I don't think would be desirable for some.

Albion Fishersgate 5 Hassocks Hotel 1 Tony Jenner 8,210* - 270 Derek Taylor A good game from TJ who made a steady 2.7k start and added to his score nearly every visit while Derek had no luck. Ian Lelliott 5,290 - 230* Rob Hall Rob was flying and up to 11k in slightly over 10 minutes before leaving a ball up the middle.... he missed and Ian didn't need a second invitation to take the win. A shame, because Rob had played it really well up until then. Colleen Park 2,880* - 1,980 Dilly Williamson Colleen made a nice 2k start and although Dilly got the break back he was unable to catch her. Dave Ingram 7,510 - 250* Barry West Plenty of good shots from Barry who was very unlucky to lose a lot more than he kept in this game. Ian Lelliott & Kyle Ingram 1,220* - 3.170 Rob Hall & Dilly Williamson Kyle unfortunate to lose his opening 1.5k break, Rob and Dilly both got the balls back during the game but the home side didn't. Tony Jenner & Dave Ingram 8,590 - 320* Derek Taylor & Barry West Derek unfortunate to lose his opening break, Barry played a couple of excellent shots to get the break back but then put the break down 4 times, I kept a 7.6k break and we all lost some scores after that until TJ finished off at the end. A nice mixture of sarnies, onion rings and chicken nuggets, the music on the juke box was good and the company was great.... apart from one of the locals who clearly believed that she could play much better than any of us!

Laughing Fish 5 – 1 Plough
Andy Brooks 3250* - 1130 Chase Newman Les Whiteman 1490 – 2000* Darren Newnham Jamie Hall 1530* - 1370 Ian Giffen Henry Brooks 3550 – 3480* Dave Knight
Andy & Les 2010* - 870 Chase & Ian Henry & Jamie 5620 – 1000* Geoff & Dave
As this was the final day of my holiday (hence the lack of recent correspondence), I may have accidently spent the whole day drinking so felt quite fortunate to still be able to see the end of the cue. From what I remember, it was a good fun night with the Plough. Table may not have been at its best but I will have to check that when sober!
Still awaiting the result from HHUSC vs Brewers and then I can send out the first set of tables.

Week 2 Hikers 6 (six) - 0 Fish **Brian 1630 - 1600 Ray - Brian sinking the red ball in the 200 to win!! Matthew 3200 - b/p Andy** **Michelle 5200 - 230 Jamie Kev 2960 - 1260 Les** **Bella & Jack 1750 - 730 Ray & Andy Michelle & Kev 1310 - 1200 Les & Jamie** Enjoyable evening with the Fish guys who were unfortunate not to take a couple of legs. Controversial team selection from home captain could have meant a long walk for him to the Plough for our next match, but fortunately Kev managed to sink the last ball in the 100 to win and avert that possibility

Laughing Fish 0 - 6 Glynde
Scores not to hand but nothing of any note other than a 7k from Phil against me in the singles.
I've decided I'm too old to play any more, seem to have completely lost it!
Nonetheless a very enjoyable night with the Glynde boys
