Cheering news for a rainy day. The Horsham League are pleased to announce the return of its famous summer competition known as the "King & Barnes Open Doubles" last fought for in 1999. Those who may remember it would undoubtedly include six-times winners Chris Tupper and Colin Smith, recipients each time of a smart "trophy clock". Other winners have come from Mid Sussex, Brighton, Billingshurst, Horsham and Redhill. Entries will be taken early next year and will be open to any Pairs in Sussex and Surrey, with the rounds being played on Horsham League tables. Entry for the first year back will be FREE, with a maximum of 32 Pairs, first come first served. The format will be a simple knockout (as previously) and games will be played on Tuesdays, once a fortnight throughout June, July and August, whilst trying not to encroach upon Jubilee Cup, Off-the-Spot and 4-Pin activity. Condition of entry is that competitors adhere to the set night. You may read about the competition's history and some photos of past winners (and their victory spoils !) here: docs.google.com/document/d/19Tq1JbAcqPVbDR66-YPf_1tR6m9eKpULJaiohvwGaFg/pub

The reinstatement of the Horsham's King & Barnes Open Doubles remains on course: - The sponsored "clock trophies" have been arranged and are already to hand;
- The Winners' Perpetual Cup has been tracked down.
Having lain dormant for the last 14 years in someone's shed it had understandably got in a bit of a state, and verdigris had to be removed. However, it's a quality item, and has responded quite well to a bit of elbow grease - as can be seen in these "before and after" pictures:

Good work Clive. Now all we need to do is find the Runner Up Trophy

Could be a problem there, Ian. The last two pairs of recipients of the runners-up perpetual cup were: 1997 / 98 E Griffin. K Potter 1998 / 99 P Gibbs. M Fairs If Gibbsy and Fairsy have it, all well and good. However, Eddy moved away - in which case I wouldn't hold out much hope of getting it back. In that event it might be worth asking the sponsors a year down the line if they want to re-dedicate the competition and provide a new runners-up cup.

A requisite is that a pairing must be teammates from the same team (from whatever league). This is following the tradition of the competition. Some pairings will no doubt be strong, but we're trying not to encourage the formation of 'super teams' from unrelated venues. Relevant house is to be specified on the (free) entry form. A 'reserve list' will be displayed for those who have registered an interest but not sent in a form. Clive T

Just to say that we collectively agree with the "pair from one team" rule: if that's how it is, please expect to get two pairs entering from Roffey CC. Will get our entries in once this has been clarified.

Read your MSBB post: great, glad that's all sorted. Roffey CC's prospective entries are Adam & Ian, Jim & Paul. Will get the form emailed soon, hope there's plenty of interest elsewhere: looking forward to it!

The Final of the above competition has been provisionally arranged for Tuesday 23rd August 2016. at the Stout House. It will be played as a Best of Five Frames.
It is anticipated that Mark Woodhouse, the supremo of our sponsor Hall and Woodhouse Brewery, will be in attendance to present the prizes.

That is an unusual format for a doubles match? I would have thought that best of 4 frames with each player having one break each would have been the fairest way to play it with aggregate score deciding the result if the match is level at 2-2? It is a shame that the games for all of the rounds have to be played on fixed nights, I would very much have liked to have played in this competition however having booked family holidays in June and August and not knowing the dates that the games would have to be played on I don't think that is possible. I know that I am not the only person who will be unable to enter for those reasons. Good luck to all taking part, I hope that the competition is well supported and will continue to prove popular in the future.

Okay, some fine-tuning of the arrangements for this competition is now possible. I have taken aboard the sentiment that it would be reasonable to outline the probable dates for the set nights - if set nights are to be - for the sake of those who want to plan their summer holidays around the billiards ! It was always the intention to introduce a small degree of flexibility for the later stages (quarter-finals, semis) and to canvass those still left in the competition as to which dates of a small selection were the most convenient. What we do not want is players calling off games at short notice leading to a draw being published containing "either/ors". So having touched base with John Tidy (Billingshurst Jubilee Team Knockout) and Colin Southouse (Eastbourne 4-Pin League) as to which dates to steer round, this is to be the likely outcome for Horsham's sponsored King & Barnes Open Doubles (- completely free entry, and residency not a condition! ) Tues 31st May (8pm) - 1st Round (8 matches) & Wed 1st June (9pm) - 1st Round (8 matches) ======================================= Venues are Roffey S & SC; Roffey Cricket Club; Southwater Sports Club; Limeburners; Stout House; Windmill Crawley, Windmill Littleworth and Plough Bull. 31st May will be an 8pm start and 1st June a 9pm start. Players may switch days, but keeping the same venue and time so long as the opponents agree and the venue are informed. Tuesday 21st June - 2nd Round (8 matches) ========================================= The same 8 venues will be used, players will have the option to play a week earlier on Tuesday the 14th by arrangement (ie. at their opponents' convenience) Tuesday 12th July - Quarter-finals (4 matches) ============================================== Preferred venues at this stage are Roffey S & SC, Roffey CC; Limeburners and Plough Bull. Players will be given the option of playing a week earlier or a week later (Tues 5th or 19th) Tuesday 9th August - Semi-Finals (2 matches) ========================================== Venue: Windmill (Crawley) - slight possibility this will be put back a week (16th August) if 4-Pin league is still running. Tuesday 23rd August - Grand Final (best of 5 frames) ================================================== Venue: the Stout House (already booked). This will be followed by the presentation of prizes by our Sponsor. Unless all slots are filled by 31st March (only 8 taken so far) the closing date for entries will be extended to 30th April 2016.Clive Thompson, HDBBL Chairman

One more week to enter. I will put reminders up on the various boards where an interest has been shown. Competition will be underway a month later (31st May/1st June) and I would like to publicise draw 3 weeks in advance. Even if we get just five more pairs entering that will form a reasonable basis for reinstatement of this flagship event !

Matt, I will be having another operation on my cue arm on the 21st... it will be under a general, can we bring our match forward to the 14th? Tommo, I was going to ask Richard where Littleworth was, but sadly he is not here any more... how do we find this place? Geoff.

Hi Geoff, Best way to give you the directions is to quote this from their website:
If you can't get in the carpark (entrance is a bit tight) you can usually park in a layby opposite, or a bit further down on either side of the lane.
Regards, tommo
