Report for the press from Craig Carlson:
Tuesday 10th May was finals night in the Dover, Deal & District bar billiards league, held at the Fleur de Lis, Sandwich.
The Open Singles was won by a familiar face, as Chris Saville defeated Tim Bourner in an all-Red Cow final. Saville posted a 14,400 break in the first leg to put it beyond reach, and a closer second leg saw him better Bourner’s score 2,760-2,010 to win 2-0. This was Saville’s third straight Open Singles, and his fourteenth in total.
Saville & Neville Potts were up against defending champions Gareth Butcher & Alan Farra in the Open Pairs. Butcher, who plays for the Fleur, opened with a 3,000 break in the first leg, which was overhauled by Saville as he and Potts won 6,610, and 11,000 in the second leg gave Saville & Potts the title.
Saville made it 3 wins in 3 finals in the Division One Singles as he took on Alan smith from the Two Sawyers. A tricky table saw the match reduced to attrition, and 3,290 was enough for Saville to take the first leg. Saville just beat Smith 2,420-2,400 in the second leg to complete a unique treble of titles on the night.
It was an all-Red Cowboys final in the Division Two Singles, and Kurt King claimed his first title as he beat Stuart May 2-0. A close first leg was won 2,600-1,850, and a score of 4,420 gave King the trophy.
The Ladies Singles saw Ann Keen pick up her 21st title as she beat last year’s runners-up Cat Peel 2-1. Keen took the first leg 1,380-1,020, Peel levelled with a 2,340-1,820, but an impressive third leg from keen saw her score 4,280 for the match. Both finalists play from the Market Inn.
The Mixed Pairs final saw the same finalists as last year, but with a different result, as Mike Callanan & Lin Callanan from the magnet beat Craig Carlson & Ann Keen 2-0. Scores of 3,590 and 4,120 were enough to give them to title they last won 8 years ago.
The Ladies Pairs saw a second win of the night for Lin Callanan as she and Gill Saville defeated Cat Peel & Vonnie Ryan from the Market Inn 2-0. Callanan & Saville took the first leg 2,530-320, but a much closer second leg of 2,480-2,260 saw them clear.
The Over 50s final saw a very competitive match, as Alan Smith beat Mike Callanan 2-1. Smith (1,540) took a low scoring first leg, Callanan (8,060) levelled, but was unable to maintain the free-scoring in the third leg as Smith narrowly won 3,950-3,710 to regain the trophy he won 2 years ago.
