Congratulations to Jim Millward who won his 6th Brighton Off the Spot title. Jim beat Nigel Senior in a hard fought final after Jim had defeated Kev Hall in his semi, and Nigel had beaten Dave Ingram in his semi, although Dave had black pegged when looking to set to take a big lead.
Nigel had produced the all time Brighton Off the Spot records and Jim's record is amazing with somewhere approaching a 90% success rate over the many years the competition has been run.....he hardly damaged his record yesterday losing just one match (to Jack Baden) in the group stages.
There were the usual thrills and spills in the group stages with Nigel's usual format of 4 groups of 6 providing plenty of entertainment. Kev, Jim, Mark James and Dave won their respective groups, joined in the quarter finals by Nigel, Jean Brackenridge, Sandra Hall (who continued her good form of the weekend) and Matt Knight (who won the high break award, only valid in the group stages)
Kev beat wife Sandra in the quarters, Jim beat Matt (again) although I managed to put up a better show this time.....Nigel beat Mark and Dave beat Jean in a tight last quarter final.
In the plate competition, Bob Hall took home the cash beating Joe Oakley in the final. Bob had beaten Ros Appleby in his semi-final, a very close one with both players needing the 100 to win over the two legs. Joe had reached the final in another close match with only a couple of hundred between him and opponent Stu Mepham.
Thank you to the County Oak for hosting us, to Nigel and Kev Hall for setting up the tables (which were challenging making for some very close matches), also to Alan and Jean, together with Stuart who helped on Sunday morning with getting the tables ready for play. Cheers to Bob and Kev Stoner who scored extra games in my group, and those that stayed behind to help with scoring later in the day. Thanks to everyone who played, all the regular faces were in attendance and some new faces as well, hope you all had an enjoyable day.
Final thanks to Nigel for all his hard work in running the two days, without his efforts neither of the events could take place

And congratulations to Jim who, despite a field not lacking in bar billiards pedigree, is frankly in a class of his own when it comes to off-the-spot.

Just to say this was a great day out. Competition was well organised, a credit to all concerned. Nice venue, including the all-important coffee at the bar: good close games (I had my chances): plenty of banter and BB-related chat. Looking forward to joining the Horsham & District contingent again next year, all being well.

Excellent day well done to Jim, I always watch him play this format and as Mark says he is a class above, but even an old dog can learn by watching.
Well run and as usual great fun.
