After years of county meetings the Oxford and Wallingford Secretary would just like to know who picked the teams this year? (good luck on Sunday)
After 20 or more years of giving up 3-4 hours of my increasingly precious life trying to get two teams of the best players in Oxfordshire together and then being totally disappointed by the fact that most of the best players in Oxfordshire just can't be bothered to play.
Most of the teams in the last few years have been self-selected by who could be bothered to turn up ON THE DAY and the captains scrabbling about for replacements on Sunday morning so what is the point of any sort of structure being formulated by a committee. You can pick Lionel Messi for Oxford United but it doesn't mean he's going to turn up!
At the end of the day Oxfordshire's teams are selected by who gives a damn and who doesn't and I'm afraid that the "who gives a damn" camp is so small that it does not warrant a selection meeting.... (to which very few came anyway as you know)
Is it wrong? Damn right it is...but that is Oxon Bar Billiards 2016.
A very well done to the Oxon team yesterday finishing in 3rd position and only 3 pts behind the winners.
We started off beating Surrey 4-3 and followed that up with wins against Northants 5-2 and Berks 5-2. At this point we were joint top with both the big guns Kent & Sussex with both of them to play. We unfortunately lost both to Kent 5-2 and Sussex 4-3. Sussex winning with 22pts, kent on 21 with Oxon 3rd with 19pts.
A very well done to all with a good team atmosphere and everyone supporting each other, top stuff!
Here is a run down of the Oxon team.
Player - Wins - Score - Agg
Mark Trafford - 4 - 55,640 - 11,128 Dennis Atkins - 4 - 38,350 - 7,670 Ian Moquet --- 4 - 30,370 - 6,074 Tony Martin --- 2 - 24,080 - 4,816 Kevin Godfrey - 2 - 20,390 - 4,078 Alan Oliver --- 2 - 17,460 - 3,492 Terry Cook --- 1 - 16,190 - 3,238
I also took the highest break award with a 17,990 run out against Kent.
Bad luck Oxon B in the Division 2 championships. A very enjoyable day with a great team and well done to Sussex B who ended Champions and undefeated on the day.
We were unlucky to lose 4-3 to Sussex in the first game when Pete Burton lost a winning break at the death after chasing 6.5k against Kevin Hall. We then had two 5-2 wins against Bucks and Berks followed by a 4-3 victory over Kent B. We then finished with a disappointing 4-3 loss to Hampshire but the chase was over by then....
Final table was; Sussex B 25 Oxon B 20 Hampshire 17 Bucks 17 Kent B 15 Berks B 12
