Hi everyone, first chance I've had to do a report from Thursday's finals. Firstly I'd like to thank Pete and Ben for all their hard work throughout the day with setting up the tables and dismantling them late on. Pete also supplied two of the tables which subsequently will save the league some funds. Thanks to Chris Richards also for selling the football cards. There was certainly a big difference in how each table played. Table 1 turned out to be a flyer with two 18k breaks in the Mixed Pairs final, one for Dave and a slightly bigger one for myself in the decider. Matt Jones & Chris Cox followed us in the Div 1 singles where Matt took the first with a decent break. Chris came back to take the next two. The Senior final was next with TJ beating Neil 2-0. The Ladies Doubles final was played as a round robin on the club table upstairs. Firstly, Ros & Sheena beat Nikki & Chris 2-0 . Jean & Chelle then did the same to the same opponents. The third and deciding match was moved downstairs onto table 2 . Table 2 played pretty well although a bit slower than the others, a combination of being by the open door all day and the air conditioning not helping. TJ should have been playing Brian Bartram first on this one but a no show from Brian meant this didn't get played. Next on was Steve Hurley and Andy FW in the Lower Div singles where Andy won 2-0. The third and deciding Ladies Doubles match was next and although Ros & Sheena won the first, Jean & Chelle took the next two to regain the title. The Men's singles was last on here and Foxy started well in the first but broke down on 4K. Dave replied with 9k to take the opener. Obviously favourite now to take the title, Dave settled into the next but he also broke down when reaching 5k giving Jim a chance to level. He cleared the table and started to chase but fell short again leaving Dave to clear up and win his second Worthing singles title. Table 3 turned out to be very disappointing . The table played quite well when setting up earlier but obviously didn't like the carpet as it changed drastically as the evening went on. Pete & Ben probably had the best of it in the first match against Matt & Tony (Lower Div Doubles) winning 2-0, although no sizeable breaks scored. Four of the county's top players tried their best next in the Men's Pairs final but it certainly tested every one of them. Martin & Dave took the first but Jim & Chunky came back to win the next two. Had we have had time, I would have switched the Ladies final onto table 1, but with the evening running a bit later than scheduled, this wasn't possible. I had a quick go at trying to make table 3 more playable before the ladies started but it made no difference. Chelle started game 1 but both her and Jean struggled as did the men before them and ended up losing her break game. Jean had the same problem in the second but managed to build a lead that wouldn't be caught on this top. I am sorry to all the players who had to endure this table. We will look at moving it next year.
Thanks as always to the Tarring club for hosting our finals evening and we will see them again in two weeks for Presentation night.
