Excellent night played on 3 good tables, thank you to KT for running the night and to Pete Hickman and Stuart Mepham who with help from some willing helpers got the tables in situ and set up. To Tarring for hosting us and last but not least to the players who took part.
Just to echo TJ's comments from last night. Stu & Alan's table, first time it has been seen in public, played very well. The club table, re-set, also had some good scores recorded . Pete's table, although slowed up as the night went on due to the air-con, still played well. There were some notable performances during the evening. Marine View landlord Martin Grubb took the the title against regular stalwart Tony Collins. Hopefully he will have a team on the seafront next season so he can defend his crown. Anyone looking for a hospitable and friendly venue, the table will remain there. The Lower Div Pairs saw excellent performances from husband and wife team Mike & Alex Formoy who beat Ben & Alan (strong favourites). Mike recorded his highest break in leg two with over 4K. He then went on to tackle teammate Matt Jones in the Lower Div Singles. Although he played well and recorded another decent break, Matt proved too strong in both legs. Another shock came in the Ladies Pairs. Regular winners Jean & Chelle came unstuck against Ros & Sheena. In the first leg, Jean was in good form posting about 8k in two visits. After that, the defending champs lost their way and Ros kept scoring steadily to take the title. The Div 1 Singles saw James Whittle dominate postie Steve Hurley 2-0. Steve never got going until it was too late The premier finals pretty much went too form ; In the Men's Pairs, Matt Knight & Nigel retained their title beating Martin Smith & Geoff Jukes 2-1. Nigel pretty much sealed the first leg against the break, Matthew came off on about 4K in the next leaving Martin to clear up to make it all square. Martin went off with 7690 in the decider but Nigel replied with 8370 to the end. The Ladies Singles was a scrappy affair in the first two legs with Ros & Chelle sharing the spoils. In the decider, Chelle opened with nearly 5k, Ros tried in vain to catch the defending champ but the speed of the table kept finding her out. The 3rd leg scores were 5540 v 3370 In the main final, Nigel retained his title in a repeat of last year's match. Mark opened with10k in the first, Nigel did the same in the next with interest. The decider saw Mark take the break and reaching 3k he unluckily had a massive kick, missing both balls. Nigel took advantage and went on to win back to back titles.
Again thanks to all the helpers during the day/evening, thanks to the club as always and see you all on presentation night in three weeks.
The unplayed finals, Mixed Pairs & Senior Singles are being rearranged for hopefully Monday 29th April back at the Tarring club
