After a three month summer break the Sudbury & District Bar Billiard league will commence Thursday 3rd October. The major change over the summer has been that the league will now be sponsored by local firm Specflue Ltd and hopefully we will have a long and successful association together. Sincere thanks go to our former sponsors, Industrial Electrical Services, with whom we enjoyed a very successful nine year partnership. The league will again be made up of ten teams as follows; Brook Gloves, Brewery Tap Silvers, Cornard Brook, Hadleigh Cock, Institute Club (formally the Saracens), Red House All Stars, Sudbury Snooker Club (Formally the Tavern), The Bay Horse, The Whitehorsemen and White Horse Optimists (Formally he Kitcats)
The First fixtures sees last years champions The Brook Gloves head to the Red House All Stars in a tricky opening tie. The Gloves succumbed to the All stars last year and will want to make a stronger stat this year.
After falling at the final hurdle last season The Bay Horse will be looking to dust that disappointment under he rug and start afresh when they host the visiting White Horsemen. Last seasons game saw the Bay run out 4-3 winners but with only 4 players that evening the Horsemen could and should have upset the applecart, a shock potentially on the cards
The Institute Club is a new venue but have some well known names playing playing for them. With the table being dropped from the Saracens HEad the team has moves to Station Road and with a new narrow table will be looking to challenge again this season, although they will be making the short journey into Cornard to face the Cornard Brook this week, who themselves will be looking to build on some impressive late season form. The Institute (Saracens) nicked the fixture last year 4-3
The Hadlegh Cock will be looking to make a strong start to the season and put their home form woes of last year behind them as the entertain the Sudbury Snooker Club, formally the Taverners. The Cock won last years fixture 5-2 and they would certainly settle for a repeat of that.
In the weeks final match The Brewery Tap Silvers make a short trip around the corner to face the White Horse Optimists. The Silvers ran out comfortable 6-1 victors last year and will also be looking to make a strong start. The Optimists will be looking to challenge more this year and there have certainly have been marked improvements during the summer.
Good Luck to everyone this week

The Specflue Ltd Sudbury and District Bar Billiard League got under way with last year’s champions, Brook Gloves, facing a stiff task when visiting an experienced Red House All Stars outfit. The hosts couldn’t have started better taking both doubles before Luke Cole-Watts halved the deficit in the opening singles. Elaine Wright restored the two game advantage only for Alan Giles to keep his team in contention. The final two games went the way of the All Stars with comfortable wins from Lee Harman and Craig Bennett making the final score 5-2.
Last year’s runners up, Bay Horse, entertained The Whitehorsemen and raced into a 2-0 lead. The visitors had a chance of reducing the arrears but when Robert Cook black pegged with the last ball it handed Jeff Bridges the game. Further wins by Kieran Pettitt who top scored with 2630 and Steve Hale made the score 5-0 before Brett Parker managed a victory for the visitors. Alasdair Carnegie then made it 6-1 to the Bay Horse.
The Institute Club, formerly Saracens, travelled to Cornard to take on The Brook. The doubles were shared before Dick Cheshire and Steve Brown gave the visitors a 3-1 lead. Chris Ackland-Lang kept the Brook’s hopes alive but these were short lived as wins by Chip Millins and Simon Tonkins wrapped up a 5-2 win.
Hadleigh Cock played hosts to Sudbury Snooker Club, formerly Taverners and were soon in control taking both doubles. A top scoring 2860 by Melvin Tilbury increased the lead and wins by Doedy Munson, John Raine and Melvyn Willis made a whitewash possible. Mike McAndrews could have prevented this but a last ball 400 miss left Graham Rolfe completing a 7-0 win.
An all Sudbury derby between the White Horse Optimists and Brewery Tap Silvers went the way of the Silvers 5-2. Each team won a doubles before Michelle O’Flynn, Pete Lillie and Emma O’Flynn won their singles, Dave Cox stopped the rot temporarily with Pat Parmenter winning a close final game.

The Specflue Ltd Sudbury & District Bar Billiards League entered it’s 2nd week and saw Hadleigh Cock attempting to consolidate their lofty position with a trip to take on the White Horsemen. Taking both doubles the match was over as a contest with wins from the returning Dave Willis and Melvin Tilbury putting the Cock 4-0 up, Wins from Brett Parker and a top scoring Gary Addison (2040) stopped the rot before Doedy Munson won the final match to give the Cock a 5-2 victory.
3rd entertained 4th as the Brewery Tap Silvers hosted the Institute club, and the Tap shot into a 3-0 lead winning both doubles, including a 1010 break for Dave Lillie, and Michelle O’Flynn taking the 1st singles, however the Institute rallied and wins from Simon Tonkins, Chip Millins & Ian Furlonger levelled it up. Steve Brown then proceeded to knock in a 920 break to rattle up a score of 2130 to take the deciding singles to make the final score 4-3 to the Institute
Hosting their first Home game were the Sudbury Snooker Club as they entertained the Red House All Stars from Stanningfield. Both doubles went to the visitors and lead became unassailable with wins from John Henderson and Craig Bennett, Kevin Patrick pulled a game back for the Snooker Club before James Baker top scored with 1730 to make it 5-1. Mike McAndrews took the last singles for the Snooker Club to make the final score 5-2 to the visitors.
Last seasons champions, the Brook Gloves, have made a slow start to the season but were back to winning ways after entertaining the White Horse Optimists. The doubles were shared and the Gloves moved in front with Andy Hill winning the 1st singles, a cracking match then saw Alan Giles and Jake Cox tie leaving the game 2.5 to 1.5, however the Gloves were not to be denied and wins from Billy Anderson and Joe Andrews-Worth sealed the game. Dave Cox pulled one back late on to make the final core 4.5 -2.5 to the Brook Gloves

Been a little lax on here this season so I thought I’d put on an update.
We have 5 weeks left in this league season and two teams (The Institute & The Bay Horse) currently lead the way. The Institute are top on game difference and also having a game in hand on the Bay Horse with 23 points from a possible 24. However the game in hand is against the current champions the Brook Gloves who sit in 4th but 7 points worse off., seemingly unlikely to defend their title. The will still have a say in where the title goes though as they still have to face the Bay Horse in 2nd place whose only dropped points came in defeat against the Hadleigh Cock, who are sitting 3rd, and the Institute where the game finished as a 3.5-3.5 draw. The top two meet next week (Feb 6th)
The first trophy has been won with Melvin Tilbury and John Raine winning the Steve Richardson Charity Doubles at the Stanningfield Red House.

The Brewery tap had a extra player in their team who were away against the formidable Bay Horse team on Thursday and as usual a happy affair throughout, many thanks to both teams for fitting me in especially Emma my skipper and Dave Lillie for dropping out of his singles match and all the oppos who graciously accepted my inclusion

It was a pleasure to see Colin, although I think he needs more practice, as he was struggling to keep up with the drinking side of things at times
Colin did have the misfortune of partnering me in the doubles and I do believe he was somewhat happy that I refrained from going for too many 200 shots and we did have a comfortable victory.
