It is a shame there was no live stream as there is in Jersey and I think Guernsey.
This is the AEBBA's most prestigious event, would have been great to hear how it went each day.
I wait to be shot down here.

It seems that on the AEBBA site the mechanism has been put in place for a live feed: aebba.co.uk/aebba-pairs-2023/... but it's probably 'twirly' to expect it to be done this year and we'll just have to be patient. Hopefully someone will post a snippet for us later on this evening.

I wasn't at the event this weekend, but I believe the winning pair was Jim Millward & Joe Oakley - so congratulations to them!

Well done to Jim Millward and Joe Oakley on winning the Pairs today, richly deserved and congratulations to both of them. Runners up were Kevin Tunstall and Martin Cole, well done to both of them. The final and both semi finals were fantastic matches of the highest quality. Jim and Joe beat Nigel Senior and Marcus Chipman in one and Kevin and Martin beat Mark Trafford and Matt Jones in the other
Well done to Caroline Jones and Dave Jones on winning the Plate defeating Dave Constable and Tony Cross in an all Surrey final
Thank you so much to the people who helped set up and take down the tables, a thankless task. We could certainly have done with more help taking them down this evening
I am sure that once Nigel has recovered from playing so well and running a brilliant tournament he will post a more detailed report

Great weekend, well run and highest standard. Shout out to all those that made the event possible and to those who work tirelessly in the background. I would like to say a big well done to Martin and Rebecca Greenway on winning their group a tremendous effort which resulted in them deservingly winning the meritorious performance trophy.
Stuart Mepham as always for all the work he does getting the tables to the event and setting up a great set of tables, Nigel and Matt for the work on the admin desk and to the lovely lady who raised loads by selling the raffle tickets. Thanks to those who helped get the tables in and out. As Matt says not that many willing volunteers getting the venue cleared but thanks to those who helped including Laura Cole and Emma Noel who put some that sat and just watched to shame.

A great weekend with friends and bar billiards, made even more special with an all-Surrey plate final and a win for Caroline and me.
The tables were some of the nicest I’ve played at a tournament. Not too easy but all getable.
Congratulations to Jim and Joe on winning the main, Rebecca and Martin on a great group performance, and many thanks to all those who ran a smooth and successful competition and evenings entertainment.

A summary below of the competition from me. Full details of the scores etc will be available on the website when I get a chance to put all the results together.
51 pairs entered the competition (2 pairs up last year). These were split into 8 groups, 5 of 6 and 3 of 7. As last year the groups of 6 would play 5 games, each pair getting a break each, last game being pairs choice and equal opportunity. Top 3 pairs to go into main and bottom 3 going into the plate.
Group A – 7 in this group. Sue Atkins & Dawn Jordan were brilliant securing wins in their first 5 matches. However, they were pipped to the group win by Martin & Rebecca Greenway who beat them in the final match. The Greenway’s performance earned them the much deserved merit award. Brian Richards & Roger Taylor missed the chance to win their group but lost their last match but qualified in 3rd place.
Group B – Jim Millward & Joe Oakley were dominant in this group winning all 6 matches with a 9,082 average. Chris Cox and Matt Knight won 5 and only lost out to Jim & Joe due to Joe’s opening break in their match. Wily old Ric Cunningham and Tony Jenner qualified in 3rd edging out Paul Butcher and Paul Lovegrove on aggregate score.
Group C – A very tough group. Marc Chipman & Nigel Senior went unbeaten with a 10,685 average and recorded against the break wins over the other 2 qualifiers Bob Hall & Phil Osborne, & Leon Beer & Phil Collins. Bob & Phil also had a 10k+ average recording 5 wins. Last year’s runners-up Leon & Phil looked in real trouble losing their first 2 matches. And with Dave Jones breaking on table 6 they could have been almost out, but in the end they won that game and eventually made it through on aggregate. Dino Clark & Syl Murphy missing out after beating Leon & Phil in their first match.
Group D – Curt Driver & Gerry Fitzjohn confirmed their status as group favourites with 5 wins from 5 and a 9,154 average. Jon Scoones & Phil Hawkins 2nd with 4 wins. Melvyn Johnson & Vinnie Brown doing well to progress with 3 wins.
Group E – Previous winners Pete Phillips & Steven Sheard topped the group but left it late as they had to win their last game to guarantee qualification. They beat Colin Robbins & Gary Powell to knock them into the plate, as Ernie Jordan & Ray Hussey and Damian Coates & Mel Standbridge both recorded wins in their final matches to overtake Colin & Gary and qualify for the next stage.
Group F – Another tough group. Reigning champs Mark Trafford & Matt Jones won 1 out of their first 3 matches, but could not really be blamed as their opponents went off with enough in their 2 losses. The pressure was on and they gave chances to Alan & Jean Brackenridge but ultimately survived that test and then won a must win game against Bill & William Trinder to make it through in 3rd. Kevin Tunstall & Martin Cole made it through unbeaten averaging 10,490. Dennis Atkins & Geoff Jukes also through with 4 wins.
Group G – Barry Holt & Chris Oakley impressive going through unbeaten averaging 10,396. Barry also with the highest break of the day with 19,330. Simon & Stephen Coleman through as runners up. Tim Cole and recent West Sussex quarter finalist Trevor Fitzwilliam also qualifying in 3rd spot.
Group H Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham topped this group with 4 wins. Late replacement Jon Bamsey secured 2nd place partnering Roger Bowen with 3 wins. Darren Isard & Terry Isard grabbed 3rd spot – this meant Andy Haines & Merv Yearwood slightly unfortunate to go out on 3 wins losing out on aggregate score. Into the Sunday, the plate competition had 27 pairs in it. Surrey were strongly represented here and had 3 of the favourites – Colin Robbins & Gary Powell, Dave Constable & Tony Cross and Caroline & Dave Jones. Darren Isard & Terry Isard. Colin & Gary would lose to Caroline & Dave in the quarter finals. Caroline & Dave then beat Ian Gordon & Pauline Withey on aggregate in the 4 legged semi. DC and TC getting to the final with a 3-1 win over Paul Lovegrove & Paul Butcher. The final was a little one sided as Dave & Caroline sealed it 3-0. Well to done Dave and Caroline.
Onto the main, where the 2nd and 3rd place teams from Saturday played off to meet the group winners. Reigning champs Mark Trafford & Matt Jones had a tough assignment against Chris Cox & Matt Knight. Chris & Matt getting a 15k lead, but Matt J was up to the task making 18k. Leon & Phil looked more into their stride after the Saturday a 21k opener too many for the Colemans. Into the last 16, and now Saturday’s group winners entered the fray. The Greenway’s wonderful tournament was ended by Jon Bamsey & Roger Bowen. Jim Millward & Joe Oakley got a rough draw having to play Leon & Phil. Must have felt rougher being 4k down with Phil’s break to come. Phil missed early and Jim called on his years (and years) of experience to get the balls back and stay on to win the game. 2 time champs Marc Chipman & Nigel Senior got through with the aid of a 21,250 break from Nige to take out Dennis Atkins & Geoff Jukes. Curt Driver & Gerry Fitzjohn survived a scare as Roger Taylor chasing 11k broke down on 8k and partner Brian Richards got the balls back only to miss leaving Gerry to secure victory. Darren & Terry Isard made a nice 16k 2nd leg score to knock out Pete Phillips & Steven Sheard. Bob Hall (partnering Phil Osborne) opened with around 8k against KT & Martin Cole. But KT more than equal to the task. Barry Holt & Chris Oakley led by 4k at halfway but Mark Trafford & Matt Jones got them in leg 2. Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham also progressed seeing off the all-lady pairing of Sue Atkins & Dawn Jordan
The Quarters followed, Jim & Joe recorded a comfortable win over Jon & Roger. Curt (& Gerry) set Nige (& Marc) 20,480. Nige got there but required a 50-10 split to seal it – butchered that shot so left the 100 to win – which he got (just) to win by just 180. KT & Martin set 17,770 for Darren & Terry – which was too many for the Isards. No mercy for Al & Stu as Matt Jones made the day’s high break of 22,510 followed by a 22,070 by Mark T. So only 44,580 put past poor Al and poor Stu.
Into the 4 leg semis – these were great matches. Jim & Joe v Nige & Marc on table 6. No misses in legs 1 and 2. Nige getting 19,670, Jim 18,780 to keep them in touch. Marc nervy to start with but got to 4k but unfortunately pegging them. Jim misses, Nige balls back and got 13k. Joe out cold for 3 legs but played fabulously, made 19k to seal his and Jim’s spot I the final. The other semi was KT & Martin v Matt & Mark on table 4. Again this went to the last leg, as Matt & mark had secured a 2-1 and 14k lead. But Kt steps up as he usually does and delivered a 16k winning break although there were a couple visiits to the back of the table….
So,,,the final on table 8 Martin getting 8k in front, but Joe nicked the leg by around 400. Jim then off early in leg 2, but Joe gets them back to put them in a commanding 2-0 lead. KT steps in next to make a serene 21k break. But all Joe has to do is win leg 4 for the title, easier said than done, but easy he made it look opening with 9k.
So there you go the winners were then
Winners – Jim Millward & Joe Oakley (£200 each + break at Suncliff Hotel (courtesy of the hotel)) Runners-up – Kevin Tunstall & Martin Cole (£100 each) Semi Finalists – Marc Chipman & Nigel Senior/ Mark Trafford & Matt Jones (£25 each) Plate Winners – Caroline & Dave Jones (£50 each) Plate Runners Up – Dave Constable & Tony Cross (£25 each) High Break – Matt Jones 22,510 (£50) Ladies High Break – Jean Brackenridge 5,250 (£50) Merit Prize – Martin & Rebecca Greenway (£50)
Congratulations to Jim & Joe. I probably should have said a few more words on our winners when giving out the trophies but want to say now what a fantastic performance by them both. Jim was brilliant on Saturday to guide him and Joe out of the group stages. Again he showed his class against Leon & Phil when Phil presented them an unexpected opportunity in their last 16 match, he got the balls back and stuck it out to win that game. As for Joe, his performance in both the semis and the final showed a real ‘coming of age’. It is a bit of a unique experience in bar billiards the 4 legs matches in pairs. Joe as the 4th player had to sit out the first 3 legs against myself and Marcus, but to be honest never looked like missing in leg 4. Then in the final in leg 4 he had to win the leg for title – again never looked like missing. I will stop now as dont want him to get a big head!
The age gap between the winning pair is 39 years. I believe the biggest gap for a winning pair. Perhaps the perfect blend of youth and experience??

Before I sign off some thank yous –
Thanks to the hotel, this was our 3rd event here and believe it to be the best one yet. The hotel cant do enough to help us.
Thanks to Kim (Michelle’s) friend for doing the raffle (raised over £400!)
Huge thanks to Stu M, for getting the tables in the venue and set them up. They were of the highest quality. Many table run outs and I made it SIX 20k breaks. Thanks also to everyone who helped Stu getting the tables in and out of the venue.
Chelle and Sami for sorting out booking etc, 51 pairs and that is over 100 players. Plus many non players also were there as part of our party, which make it a great social weekend.
Big thanks to Matt, keeping everyone on task over the weekend and also doing a quiz to boot. Couldn’t do it without him.
Jean for her hard work doing the quiz. And just keeping all things under control in the background.
I will address here the mention of a lack of live feed over the weekend. The running of the event, especially on the Saturday, is pretty full on. Myself and Matt have the job of keeping 100 people on task for 8 hours which is no small task. This take us to around 5.30pm but we then spend another hour or so working out who got through and when and where they are playing next, before we go and get our dinner. Then Matt goes off and fills all the scorecards for the next morning’s play and I go off and a few beers with my mates. So although me updating with all the scores in play or at the end of the days play is possible, quite frankly, the priority is with the players playing and trying to keep them informed of where they need to do next. Certainly I have noticed recently a lot of suggestions of how events could be changed in future to make them better, with people saying how simple it would to be to do this or do that. But I challenge those people to put what they say into practice and run events themselves if they want them to be played differently – I am not so sure it is quite as easy as they think!
But I want to make a final thankyou to all the people that participated. These events do not happen without the support of the players. There are many AEBBA events that will come up in the autumn and I urge players to support the ones that are eligible to play in. Then of course, there are a number national opens held in various counties over the year, the calendar for them is on the AEBBA website. Again I urge players to support these events, they can only run if enough players participate, most only just break even after paying out for table hire, trophies and prize money. If you only can say do one event make it your local open as they heavily rely on the local players playing.
I will end on a very positive note, the hotel do want us back! Next AEBBA Pairs is booked in for 8th -10th March 2024.

Big thanks to everyone who helped with the event.
Running the events is hard work and very time consuming, its not just the time you put in over the weekend as the preparation can start weeks in advance.
Thanks again and congratulations to all the winners.

...and thank you to you Nigel, your love for our game is very clear with the amount of your own time you put into running the AEBBA comps, doing the schedules, the website statistics and everything else you do - I for one really appreciate it :) x
