I would like to wish my grandson Jake Sheard & his playing partner "auntie" Pauline good luck for the W/end, at 9 years old I was wondering if he was the youngest to have ever taken part in the AEBBA pairs ? He hasn't got long before he takes his first shot as it's 10am with his break and three easy matches to start with! All the best to everyone else taking part and for a great time spent at the Suncliff Hotel. Regards & see you all soon. Keith

Thanks to those who organised and ran the weekend, those who got the tables there, in and set up and dismantled and away, your hard work is really appreciated. As usual a fun weekend with a high standard of bar billiards, plenty of laughs and always good to catch up with people.
Congratulations to Matt Jones and Mark Trafford on winning the event and to Curt Driver and Gerry Fitzjohn on making the final. To Stuart Carruthers and Steve Hopkins on winning the Plate beating last years winners Dave and Caroline Jones in the final. Sure Nigel will update fully once everything is in place.

A summary below of the competition from me. Full details of the scores etc will be available on the website when I get a chance to put all the results together.
52 pairs entered the competition (1 pair up from last year). These were split into 8 groups, 4 of 6 and 4 of 7. As last year the groups of 6 would play 5 games, each pair getting a break each, last game being pairs choice and equal opportunity. Top 3 pairs to go into main and bottom 3 going into the plate.
Group A – 7 in this group. Reigning champs Jim Millward & Joe Oakley, were placed in this tough group and the breaks did not come out well for them having Curt Driver, Stephen Coleman and David Jones all with the break against them. However, they got chances in all games (they didn’t take them all) and qualified 2nd in their group recording 5 wins. The group was won by Curt Driver & Gerry Fitzjohn, they were unbeaten. The 3rd qualifying spot was taken by Simon & Stephen Coleman.
Group B – Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham won this group unbeaten with 6 wins. 2010 champs Pete Phillips & Steven Sheard left it late but a 19k score in their last match gave them 2nd place. Three pairs scored 3 wins, Lewis Stratford & Sean Stratford edged out Paul Butcher & Paul Lovegrove by 1,020 on aggregate. Karen Bacchus & Sue Oakley did well to match those 2 pairs on wins but were short on the aggregate.
Group C – Three time winners Leon Beer & Phil Collins overcame a dodgy start losing to Surrey’s Colin Robbins & Gary Powell first game but won their remaining 5 matches to top their group. Dennis Atkins & Geoff Jukes were solid winning 4 matches for 2nd place. Michael Wilson & Nigel Wilson made a fine debut qualifying for the 2nd Round winning 3 matches taking out Lorraine & Sandra Hall on aggregate score. Colin & Gary only managed one more win after beating Leon & Phil and could only finish 6th out of the 7 pairs.
Group D – Melvyn Johnson & Vince Brown played well to go through unbeaten with 6 wins. Barry Holt & Chris Cox lost to Melvyn & Vince first match but won their remaining games to progress in 2nd place. Damian Coates and Mel Standbridge continued their good record in this event by progressing with 4 wins to take 3rd. A mention for Caroline Gower & Sue Haberman who earned the merit prize for their 2 wins in their group plus a win over the very experienced Brian Richards & Roger Taylor in the plate.
Group E – Dave Ingram & Martin Cole faced Matt Knight & Phil Osborne in a last match shoot out to determine who won the group. Dave & Martin won this 6,360-4,100. They also had the highest group average of 12,026, (helped by a 21,310 break by Martin) Both pairs safely through though. They were joined by the most successful in this event all lady pair of Dawn Jordan & Sue Atkins who won 3 out of their 5 matches. Dawn knocking out and beating hubby Ernie (partnering Ray Hussey) in the process.
Group F – 2016 & 2018 winners Marc Chipman & Nigel Senior required a last match win against the then unbeaten pair of Ric Cunningham & Tony Jenner to win this group. Darren Isard & Terry Isard made it through in 3rd place with 4 wins out of 5.
Group G – Bob Hall & Kevin Hall went through comfortably winning all 5 of their games. It was close for the 2nd and 3rd places but these were taken by Oxon’s Graham Mildenhall & Keith Hollis and Doug Dawson & Ellis Candy. Both pairs winning 3 matches.
Group H The top ranked pair Mark Trafford & Matt Jones untroubled here with 5 wins and a 11,764 average. Dave Constable & Tony Cross took 2nd. The last qualifying place was the closest call as Alan Brackenridge (partnering wife Jean) went off with 8,010, only to see Jon Bamsey (partnering son Adam) come back with 8,030. This put Adam & Jon through and Alan & Jean perhaps the unluckiest pair not to qualify with an average of 7,628 and 2 wins.
Into the Sunday, the plate competition had 28 pairs in it. Caroline & Dave Jones had the opportunity to defend the title they won last year and made it to the final. They knocked out fellow Surrey pair Colin Robbins & Gary Powell by just over 500 points in the quarter final. They then beat Cliff Slade & Tony Hearne convincingly 3-0 in the semi final. In the final they met Bournemouth virgins Stephen Hopkins & Stu Carruthers. They were perhaps a bit disappointed not to be in the main but played much better on the Sunday. After surviving a fightback from Ernie Jordan & Ray Hussey in the quarter final they took on Daniel Wheal & Melissa Beach in the semi final. They were 2-1 up and 12k up but it was Daniel’s break to come. Daniel had 2 chances but couldn’t convert. In the final Caroline & David led by 6k with 1 leg won apiece at halfway. Then Stu made a cracking 16k run out in leg 3. Caroline couldn’t recover this deficit and although David got a chance he couldn’t prevent Stephen and Stu winning the plate title
Onto the main, where the 2nd and 3rd place teams from Saturday played off to meet the group winners. Reigning champs Jim Millward & Joe Oakley made it safely through beating Dawn & Sue – their reward - a matchup against Trafford & Jones. Matt Knight & Phil Osborne made it through just beating Simon Coleman & Stephen Coleman by just 600 points.
Into the last 16, and now Saturday’s group winners entered the fray. Only Matt Knight & Phil Osborne could beat a group winner taking out Melvyn Johnson & Vince Brown. Nigel (& Marcus) set Geoff (& Dennis) 20,820, Geoff making a fine reply of 17,920. Martin Cole also hit form with an 18,000 run out seeing off Barry Holt & Chris Cox. Curt’s 16,990 was enough to see off DC & Tony Cross. And the big match between Trafford & Jones and Millward & Oakley. Jim & Joe could only get 140 points – not enough to challenge the favourites!
The Quarters followed, Curt & Gerry could have been out despite being 12k up Stu Mepham (& Alan D) had a chance reaching 10k but came off short. Matt & Phil took a first leg lead of 4k against Leon & Phil, but Phil wrapped it up from there. Nige & Marcus got 17,670, Martin Cole (& Dave Ingram) got to 12k on target but missed both balls on the split to end that one. Bob Hall & Kev Hall were 9k up on Traff & Jones but they came back with 15k+
Into the 4 leg semis – Nige went first against MT & MJ but off on 6.5k. Mark got them back only to miss on 2k, but from there it was all Matt, winning leg 1 with 5k, then breaks of 16k and 10k. Although I do remember him leaving a dodgy one in the middle in leg 2 on 16k! An early miss by Leon put Curt & Gerry in control with them going 2-0 up and 28k up. Phil then makes a magnificent tournament high break of 22,840. Gerry kept his cool to make a match winning 8k break in leg 4.
So,,,the final on table 6 Gerry off early, Traff in to make 16k lead. Matt J super run out of 18,790. Then Curt an even better run out of 19,820. Mark needs to clinch the leg to get the title but misses early. Gerry tried as he might to get balls back but takes peg out and gives balls back to Matt – no mistakes this time and gets enough for their 2nd title.
So there you go the winners were then
Winners – Mark Trafford & Matt Jones (£300 each + break at Suncliff Hotel (courtesy of the hotel)) Runners-up – Curt Driver & Gerry Fitzjohn (£100 each) Semi Finalists – Marc Chipman & Nigel Senior/ Leon Beer & Phil Collins (£25 each) Plate Winners – Stephen Hopkins & Stu Carruthers (£50 each) Plate Runners Up – Caroline & Dave Jones (£25 each) High Break – Phil Collins 22,840 (£50) Ladies High Break – Jean Brackenridge 8,590 (£50) Merit Prize – Caroline Gower & Sue Haberman (£50)
Congratulations to Mark & Matt. They will be hard to stop in the future as both are 2 of the best players around at the moment.
