Can I please offer my assistance to any Secretary who cannot sort out a fair fixture list of regular home and away fixtures. Corner House's fixtures this summer are very, very lop-sided and our landlord will be wondering why we are never there over the next few weeks. The table has (according to my information) NOT yet been purchased.

This is probably something we should have on the forum technical help, a set of template fixture lists for sprog secretaries. If you have a set of them for even numbers of teams Peter, email them to me and I'll put up downloadable links.
Odd numbers are easy, but send them if you have them typed

I work out EVERY fixture list from memory and experience. I do not use any template as there is always so much to be taken into consideration, especially now that there is likely to be more venues with A and B teams.
This also applied to playing formats for all Opens, including Bournemouth.
I reiterate my offer, and would much rather put extra work in myself than have a very lopsided fixture list imposed on ANY team, expecially as it always seems to affect my own team; by total coincidence I am sure.

No problem Peter, I'll post them up myself when time allows.
It's only a question of using a satisfatory standard template that makes sure no teams are home or away more than twice on the trot and then listing the teams that are never home together.
Sav.

If it's that easy, why does everyone else not follow those guidelines.

I used to do this sort of thing (15 years ago now) and was armed with templates (some of which I worked out myself) for 9/10 teams; 11/12; 13/14; 15/16 and 17/18.
But the skill is around tailoring the fixtures to fit the length of the season, and whatever else is going on - fixed nights for cup competitions, etc. And it's usually a good thing to avoid Bonfire Night.
So you're both right. ;D

[size2]If it's that easy, why does everyone else not follow those guidelines.
They probably do not know the core odd number of teams pattern that is the basis for all fixture lists and have not been told by those who do See technical help section Sav

Should be a piece of cake nowadays, with divisions averaging about ten teams across the board: We certainly won't see the likes of the Billingshurst League Division Two of 1973/74 again, when the Partridge's record was : P 32, W 31 L 1, F 126, A 34 Pts 62. Seventeen teams in the division that year, and they won by 14 clear points ! ;)

Just to point out that I wasn't saying there was any correct or incorrect way, I just said that personally I do not use any templates. I collate the requirements of any fixture list and do the calculations individually. Whichever way one does it, you should never have any team being at home or away more than two consecutive weeks. It is not fair and it is not good for the landlord, especially these days.
Nobody finds these things easy to arrange when they first have to do them, but I have done them for nearly 30 years and was simply offering a free service out of the obvious goodness of my heart.

For future reference, the way I would start for a 10-team league would be: week 1 1v10 2v9 week 2 9v1 8v2 week 3 1v8 2v7 week 4 7v1 6v2 etc Do you see the basic pattern? The problems arise with A and B teams, especially when A is in one division and B is in another. You have to know what you are doing BEFORE the draw for teams is made, and match numbers up that go together on home and away bases. It is no good blindly drawing numbers and then find out they will not link in with each other.
It is also important not to give any team any advantage by playing two away matches on any particular table within a short space of time. Believe me, there is ALWAYS a way of making it fair as long as you do not have too many venues with two teams.
I always also try to make every team START with one H and one A match, and then, even more importantly, FINISH with the same pattern. It is fairer if things are tight and it also makes things "work" at the half-way or changeover week of the league.
Tips are free, but any donation may be sent to a cancer charity of your choice.
