Our first away match was a great deal of fun, seeing old and new faces, meeting good friends and making some new... we hope :D. There was a great deal of laughter and fun, mostly provided by our unending verbal abuse of ourselves. We enjoyed it no end and can't wait to host them at home.
Coach House v Schooner B
Match One.
*Grover 1140 v Rob Laye 1510
Grover reverted to the out dated break as his first break, deciding that old skool was the way to go forward. For a while both lads were batting the balls around the table, knocking down pegs and taking numerous foul shots. Personally I think they forgot the objective was to leave the pegs standing. Rob however finally got the game's purpose and returned the game to the break. He then decided to show off by almost double pegging the whites, but left the balls sitting just behind. It was pure skill. In the end Rob pulled ahead so much that Grover couldn't catch him and it was 1-0 to the home team. (Finally someone has managed to deflate Grover's ego. Congratulations Rob, its not an easy task.)
Match 2
*Chris 1460 - Hem 0 (Yes I am ashamed)
(Has trouble reading Andy's writing)
Chris broke with 50 before allowing me onto the table, and I graciously decide that I would drop my score by taking out the first white peg. Chris racks up a few more points and then leaves the table for me to come back with 24... but no I take down the peg. Man I'm nice aren't I? Finally I manage to score something. There was a cheer from the Schooner B for the whole 8 I managed to score. Proudest moment of my life. Rob however goes one better, returns with 69, good boy. My response to his 1k was to ease my way up to score board slowing by gaining 5. Some how I must have gained some more points because at the dropping of the bar I was at about 90, no where near enough to win but still, it was nearly a grand. I sunk the last few balls and left myself with the 200 shot. Which, as Lady H reminded me, ended with yet another spectacular display of my knocking the black peg over once again. I return to my team red faced, immediately doing as I did with the pegs to my drink. Yes I got laughed at, yes I had to buy another drink.
Well they don't call me Hem "Black Peg" Brewster for nothing you know. 2-0 to the Coach House
Match 3
*Jay Shurey 390 v Rob Harrison 2370
Both refused to pot a single ball at the beginning of the game
Jay just couldn't get started.
And then Rob returned strong.
Jay hit a five.
Rob returned stronger.
Jay starts t score something big, but fouls.
Rob returns stronger.
Then Jay picks up on Rob's streak and split 20 50 off the back of the cushion. We cheer for Jay, we celebrate a brilliant show.
Then He fouls. We commiserate and abuse; we feel it makes us play far better. I realize however that Jay has 1/10 of Robs and things look brighter. Until Rob scores. Well it was good while it lasted.
Match 4
Andy & Jay (Over a grand, can't read how much they scored
*Denise & Chris 940
So our captain takes up the challenge of restoring the Schooner B's pride along with our Jay. Denise breaks well causing concern to us, but the pegs struck again and no one could manage to score in the first round of the game. Denise goes for 25. Andy begins his second round on the table. Now to make this next comment mean anything to you, you must understand that there has been no music playing in the pub, so just as Andy is playing, music rings around the pub, and the song: Eye of the Tiger. We have to Remember this because he clears up and gets onto the break. He comes off at 55 to a round of applause from the Schooner. He rocks, he rolls. Chris was unlucky leaving the red behind the 1 hole,. but Denise comes back with a superb 100 shot. I got distracted at this point by the sandwiches, in which Jay caused some score board damage, because the next thing I know, we're in the lead. then, oh and get this, finally we're winning, and the our idiot of a captain knocks down the black peg.... noooooooooo.
Gary smiled as he continued play; apparently I missed the white going down first. Man I nearly had a heart attack. Don't do this to me people! Anyway after the game goes another round the bar drops on Andy. Now because I can't read the score I sprawled, I don't know how my notes make sense, any pure extract
Chris 100
Whooooot we win. Some how I'm think the boys were more than 200 ahead. Either way we won so 3-1.
Match 5
*Hem & Grover 430 Rob & Anna 2620
It was to play this won. We had no pressure to win since technically we had already lost, but we bowed beneath the pressure anyway, you know for old times sake. I wonderfully turned the break over by striking the white peg from the standing position. Grover got a good break, but lost the ball own the 200 hole almost taking the black peg with it, which would have reduced our score from nothing, to precisely nothing. The Home team gets the break back and whack up some impressive scores. Grover returns to the taking taking us to 29. Just after this Andy works out how the pen works; how to make the nib return inside the pen; possibly he found it more interesting then our abysmal performance. It ended up being 43-262 thanks to both Anna and Chris actually playing the game compared to Grover and myself. However we enjoyed ourselves even if no one else did.
(Personally I think everyone was laughing at us so they must have enjoyed it)
At the end of the match, having lost graciously 4-1 (Again) we played a rather wonderful doubles, and we might have won if it wasn't for Bill coming up trumps at the end of the game and winning marginally. Good Boy.
The sandwiches were great, despite the resident cat trying, and failing, to take some of ours, seeing Gary and Anna again was also great as was the rest of the team. Must admit the table did tend to gravitate to the pegs, and it wasn't just me I swear it! But it was a fun night out none-the-less and we are looking forward to receiving them at home in a few weeks time.
Good Luck for the rest of the season guys!
