Ian Lelliott won the Brighton Masters at the Stadium beating Alan Brackenridge in a cracking final. Both men were playing in the final for the first time, Alan was put in first and knocked in a 10k break and was able to add another 2k to take a handy 12k lead into the second leg. Ian missed early handing a golden chance to Alan but Alan was unable to pot on his first visit in the second leg. This left Ian one last chance. Ian retreived the break back but looked very shakey until he reached around 6k and then looked far more comfortable as the winning line approached and won by around 1,500, also helping himself to the highest break prize.
Ian and Alan both had great runs to the final. Ian knocked out Susie Mariner and then beat number 2 seed Chris Reeves in the quarters. Former champion Chris Tupper was Ian's opponent in the semi and despite the loss of a 7k break Ian started off with enough in leg 2. Alan beat Chubbster in round 1, the beat number 1 seed and 2003 champ Nigel Senior from 7k down in the quarters. Then he beat 3 time (masters) champ Jim Millward in the semi after Jim knocked his mate Steve Mariner out 1 round earlier.
A performance of note was made by Gina Sherratt who made a stirling fightback to knockout Masters break record holder and number 3 seed Richard Wooton.
Little bit of trivia here, Ian now becomes only the third player to win both a Brighton and Worthing Masters, the other two being myself, and a certain Mr. Millward. Well done Ian, another great performance in a terrific season for you.
Also must not forget, well done to Caroline Retfalvi, who won the Lower Division Masters, her first bar billiards singles title. The final, against Tony Witcomb, ended bizarely when Tony asked for a count up after the bar had dropped, then got told he was ahead, and then sunk the break down 4 times to lose the break and the title! Hopefully the first of many for Caroline - my first title was the Lower Div Masters (in what feels like ages ago in 1998). And a very young Chris Reeves burst on to the Brighton bar billiards scene in 2002 winning this title. And I suppose I should mention a slightly older senior Senior (my dad) won his first title also in this competion in 2004.
Good luck to everyone in tomorrows Off the Spot competition.
