In the Dover, Deal & District Bar Billiards League, the Spring Cup is under way, in which the top two of each group eventually qualify for semi-final knockouts. The singles are maximum 3000 breaks, but the doubles are played using a triangle to rack the white balls behind the 100 hole for each opening break, resulting in low-scoring but often close games.
The Chequer Inn won 6-0 at home to the Royal Oak, Nonington in Group A. John Addley (6,960), Chris Saville (3,710) and Tim Bourner (6,830) swept the singles, with doubles victories for Neville Potts & Bourner (2,160), Saville & Wack Sampson (1,580) and Addley & Potts (2,780).
The Market Inn A started their campaign in good style with a 4-2 win away to the Two Sawyers A. Stuart Richardson (5,220) and Alan Smith (3,140) won for Sawyers either side of a Market success for Derek Latham (4,070), but the Sandwich side swept the doubles via Craig Carlson & Latham (1,980) Ted Hogben & Carlson (2,220) and Latham & Hogben (2,300).
The Magnet B drew 3-3 at home to Betteshanger Club in Deal. Val Judd (1,670) won for the Magnet, before Dave Howarth (6,100) levelled and then Warren Cowdrey beat Dawn Williams 1,510-1500, needing the last ball down the 200. Shirley Cowdrey & Judd (890) took the first doubles, Howarth & Ward Griffiths (1,890) regained the Betteshanger lead, and finally Williams & Cowdrey (1,770) forced the draw.
In Group B, the Market Inn B defeated the Plough & Harrow A from Tilmanstone 6-0 in Sandwich. Dave Carliell (3,590), Gareth Butcher (2,950) and Alan Farra (3,120) swept the singles, with the first two doubles going to Carliell & Farra (3,380) and Butcher & Carliell
(2,250). The final doubles went to the last ball as Farra & Butcher beat Ann Keen & Karen Keen 1,280-1,260.
The Plough & Harrow A from Bridge drew 3-3 at home to the Magnet A. Ian Dennett (3,550) and Keith Symes (4,260) put the Plough ahead, before a Magnet success for Mike Callanan (6,570). Dennett & Baz Symes (2,720) gained the first doubles, but Mike Callanan & John Higgens (2,270) and Lin Callanan & Mike Callanan (2,140) took the last two games to force the draw.
