I have copied the following form the thread on spacing in results tables as the smilie reference was hidden in there and I have had a couple of PM's on it.
There is a slight problem with smilies.
To make smilies work make sure there is no more than one space before and after any smilie code. If there is still a problem remove all spaces either side of the smilie code and insert ONE space alone before and after it.
Any line of spaces is condensed into a single space by Proboards and destroys tabulation in posts.
The routine I have inserted for preserving the spacing in posts replaces every other ordinary space in a line of spaces with an invisible special character (called a hard space) when the text is posted. The hard space is recognised as a letter by Proboards and thus the line of hard and ordinary spaces is not condensed into a single space as Proboards thinks it's a series of one letter words. Results tables can then be posted in their natural columns.
The problem is that if the hard space finishes up next to a smilie code Proboards thinks it's another letter attached to the smilie code and does not recognise the smilie code thinking its just another word. :'( The smilie code looks like these ;D >:( 8-) . If there is more than one space next to the smilie code there is a fifty / fifty chance of it working ;D >:( 8-)
This does not appear to affect spell-checkng. I think it equally important that members can post tidy league tables, but am monitoring both problems.
Sorry for any inconvenience. ;)

It works if you "do not put a space between a word and a Smillie" IE click on the smillie immediately after a word.
Smillie immediate (and return after) :) Smiilie immediate and space after :) Smillie immediate and space before another word :) like this Smillie with space before (and return after) :) Smillie with space before and space after :) like this
The space after the Smillie doesn't seem to affect it so my assumption is that the 'automatic space' (that Sav tells us about) 'Before the Smillie' is the one that counts.

When you put a smilie in a post proboards automatically puts a space before the smilie code, you do not need to put one in yourself.
If this is causing problems then discuss it in a thread and if the feeling is that having proper spacing in the forum is not worth the confusion over smilies then I will put the forum back as it was.

The board will be left with the code to allow extra spacing between words in posts, especially league tables and results.
Thus please remember NOT to put a space before you insert a smilie, Proboards will automatically insert one. If you forget, remove the two or more spaces and insert one space before the smilie code.
Smilie codes must have one space before them to work (and one space after if followed by anything)
