All that and I STILL dont know what my stats were...... You still want to know about the season 1978/79 ? Well I've already said that I know nothing about the Mid Sussex league prior to 1980, so you'll have to make do with some facts from the pop world at the time. As the new season was starting, the Commodores were at number one with Three Times A Lady. This knocked You're The One That I Want (John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John) off the top where it had stayed for ten weeks. This was followed by Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc and Summer Nights (JT/ON-J again) which stayed at the top for a further six weeks. In mid-November the excellent Rat Trap (Boomtown Rats) started a 3-week stay and there was a brief appearance at number one for Rod Stewart with Do Ya Think I'm Sexy ? (Catch those leopardskin pants !) The Christmas No 1 was Mary's Boy Child by Boney M. The new year started with YMCA at number one - no, the Village People not Gibbsey's mob ! This was followed by Ian Dury's Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and then Heart Of Glass by Blondie - every young man's fantasy at the time. Four followed in quick succession : Tragedy (Bee Gees); Oliver's Army (Elvis Costello); I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) - best karaoke number ever- and Village People again with In The Navy. The season was seen out by Art Garfunkel with Bright Eyes. There - Happy bunny now ? ;D ::)

My first ever league game was circa 1978 and I played under the pseudonym John Phillips (I wasn't registered). I believe I won against a dwarf called Reg who played with the cue over his shoulder, but I may be mixing up my first legal game with my first actual game

This thread has taken on a quirky thread, thanks for joining in BarneyBear, and I admire your honesty over a crime long since committed.
I have known of other felonies in the game: my first season in the Mid Sussex league was marred slightly by the discovery that the teammate I had known as Doug Open was really Dennis Goodburn, who had taken over Doug's registered place early on in the season just before I joined the team.
The other one was in the Horsham league, where a chap called Phil Mills was refused a mid-season transfer from the Green Dragon to the Pump Room (you had to have a good reason in those days !). He promptly changed his name by deed poll to Phil McCartney and played for the Pump Room anyway without the League secretary (my predecessor) being any the wiser !

Yup, good stats indeed for his age and first season. With the average age of players going up, many players start seasons records are probably chiselled into a piece of rock somewhere ;) Do you know, I've just stumbled over a piece of rock with LLOYDY's first two seasons chiselled into it ! ;D ;D How cool is that ? 8-) 8-) 1991/92 G.Lloyd (Dog & Bacon) 156th overall, 38th best in Div3 : P25 W14 L11 Total Score 48,570 Average 1942.8 1992/93 G.Lloyd (Dog & Bacon) 36th overall, 3rd best in Div3 : P17 W15 L2 Total Score 63,020 Average 3707. It gets put into perspective when you realise that 2k on the difficult Dog & Bacon table was worth about 8k anywhere else. ::) And the rest, as they say, is history.............. Mind you, he must have only been about twelve at around that time ! ;D

Gareth lost the final of the National Under-22 championship in 1994, and (I believe I am right in speculating that) he could not enter the following year.

You're right, ordinary Pete. Maybe I was mistaking the "23 posts" on his profile for his age. ::) ;D :o :-X :P :-[ ;)

You are not the only one with old stats. Gareth lost the final of the National Under-22 championship in 1994, and (I believe I am right in speculating that) he could not enter the following year. I remeber Lloydy telling me about that, he lost a decent break in the final chasing a big score against Allan Howes. He said it made his girlfriend, at the time, cry when he lost :'(

Well I think his girlfriend was still in her pram at the time, so that is totally understandable. I must admit he looked a little tearful himself when I tried to interview him for the Pot Black Magazine that I reported for at that time, but that could have been because somebody had nicked his Farley's Rusk and trod on his dummy!
For those who have not looked at their copy of BBQ16 recently:
"Alan Howes (Kent) played out the 1st leg for a break of 16910 except for needing two shots at the 100. But Gareth was on target to catch it but, at 9800, tried to pot a 100 shot (instead of a safer in-off shot) and toppled the pin."
Alan scored another 7920.
It also states that both 22 year-olds were playing in the event for the 1st and last time. Alan had beaten Ian Street in his semi-final and Gareth beat Robert Brooks (Kent). Notable other entrants that year were Sean Taylor (the holder) Darren Isard and Mark Sawyer.
ALSO in the field were Carolyn Farrelly and her now husband Jamie Richardson. Memories!

somebody had nicked his Farley's Rusk and trod on his dummy! Good job it was Farley's rusk: anyone wanting to nick Farrelly's Rusk (or dummy for that matter) would do so at their peril ! ;D ;D
