Cheers Mark, good to see a big entry for the first tournament of the year. Indeed. A big increase on the 76 we had last year! We have had a couple of people drop out, so there are spaces available if people can now make it and want to enter ? I won't say who has dropped out, just in case the potential new people don't like the draw ;) ;D

The draw is NOW spaced out correctly so that you can pick your last 16 in the proper thread elsewhere on this forum

I was given the draw without Counties and I apologise to Gerry Fitzjohn for not remembering where he was from. I thought he may be local. Now I find he is from Kent and does not really want to leave at Dawn (whoever she is!). I will look at it within the next day or so and see if any match can be swapped. Unless there are any volunteers to come early and avoid the crush.

Yeah great, ok with me. Please let all those concerned know that Pete Phillips and Phil Collins will now play at 10.45, with Gerry Fitzjohn and Brian Daniels switched to 12.15. I do hope now that the Kent lads can sleep soundly in their beds for an extra hour and a half. Mine's still a bacardi and coke!

Excellent, well organised day at Oxford, as you would expect very high standard of play, with the tables setting a fair challange to all. Congratulations to Mark Turner on his win in the final over KT, and to Ray Sturgess for winning the plate, beating Steven Sheard in the final. Sure somebody will put all states on later, but again very high scoring throghout the day. Thanks to all those who put in tha hard work of organising, in front and behind the scenes. The venue was excellent with plenty of room for spectators.

I would echo the comments made by BigTJ, a superb day day at Didcot Conservative Club which made an excellent venue!
Congratulations to Mark Turner on his victory, also to Ray Sturgess on winning the plate and for his hard work (along with all the other organisers!) who made the day run so smoothly.

Fantastic win for Mark Turner, still proving what a great player he is despite not playing as many opens as he used to.
For others that were not there
Runner Up - KT
Semi finalists - Tony Martin, Chris Reeves
Quarter finalists - Phil Collins, Nigel Senior, Paul Lovegrove, Geoff Jukes
Thanks to Ray, Mark and Dave Barnes for their great efforts throughout the day.

I`ll just echo Nigel`s sentiments about Mark. He did worry earlier in the day, saying he didn`t expect to get very far, but i told him the cream `always rises to the top`, and so it proved. The standard of play was very high, I know, having to chase two run-outs in my first two matches ::) Another one v Gary Johnson in the third rd meant yet another match-up against Milko in the next. It didn`t help either when my regular cue disappeared just before I was to play Milko ???, fortunately I carry my spare in the car and was able to switch to that while everyone looked for the other. Two more run-outs against Keith & Phil Collins took me to the semis, and then a strange thing happened........my other cue appeared ??? in the far corner, where three of us looked earlier. Odd that :-/ Milko just fell short in our match, chasing 20,700, the bar dropped when he was about 1k behind, hard luck mate :'(
Then it was my usual Worthing/Brighton opponent in Chris Reeves, who made an early mistake on table 2, and i had my regular piece of luck against him (always seems to be chris) to get the break back and play the clock out and then opened with enough in the second.
Mark had good wins on his way to the final - Pete Edwards, Mark James (chasing 11k), Paul Reece (last ball game), Geoff Jukes & teammate Tony Martin (also had a great day, starting off by beating Steve Sheard in the 1st rd).
The final itself saw Mark totally outplay me (I couldn`t get the one-up right) to win his second Oxon open title, and surprise surprise, he beat me in the other one as well :P
Great day, well done to Murph and Jenny in the kitchen (food was excellent) and to all on the admin desk. A very good venue.

Echo the first bit but you obviously forgot ME in the second line up. My format would have kept to schedule perfectly if we had not had one of those 45 minute raffles. Everybody won a prize though, even me!!!!

Better to have too many prizes than not enough ! I think Tony Webster hired a 2nd van to take all his prizes home :o :o :o ;) ;) ;D ;D

Fraid I do not agree. Too many prizes causes a ridiculous delay before the next round. Players can be pumped up and ready to play, so the last thing they want is to have people going up to choose between a cheap bottle of wine and another cheap bottle of wine. Or a box of deodorant and a box of bubble bath. Better prizes would have more of an impact.

Have to agree with Fazza on this one. If you do get lots of bottles donated (thats great), but pair them up. We did this recently on a function night & it saved quite a bit of time :)

Agree with Ray, a raffle is imperative if opens are to continue at their current entry fees, on the otherhand I think nearly everyone supports the raffle with at least a fiver, so prehaps another route would be to do away with raffles and charge £15 instead. This of course for some would take away the chance to gain something for the extra fiver, then KTS` suggestion of doubling up prizes is an excellent one and am sure would not effect the number of tickets brought. The other problem was in thatpeople had left and quite a few had to be redrawn, causing the draw to be furthur elongated.

I agree Ray, without a raffle, you probably can`t survive. A few years` ago, we tried to cut the amount of prizes and obtain bigger & better ones. Great idea if you have the resources I know, but it does work. I approached Channel hotels when we were in Jersey and managed to get a free weeks stay at the De Normandie, b&b(flights not included) as the main prize. I think John Burrows won it. I remember running out of raffle tickets anyway, so you don`t need loads of smaller prizes to sell them :)

Just a thought but why not put the price up £3 and give each player one strip of raffle tickets. That way you don't have to sell them and can do the draw around luchtime so people have a natural break to get some food etc. In my opinion the raffles are done late to maximise the tickets but if you give everyone tickets in the entry cost you can draw it much earlier in the day.
How much did the raffle raise as there were in excess of 90 entries so at £3 a pop thats £270 and charge anyone who is not entereing the comp £3 to come in and give them a strip to. One set of raffle tickets is all that would be required so saving on some admin costs to.

I recently attended a charity do, the raffle was 'drawn' by two individuals and the tickets were placed on the prizes, this all happened whilst the guests were eating and or dancing etc, all you had to do was look at the prizes and claim it if your ticket was attached to it , sorry Pete but Sundays raffle was also dead boring and too long and we left before it's conclusion, Agree with Ray also though that raffles are needed for income, some sense and common ground is needed, maybe Bournemouth could be used as an experiment ???

I didn't say I disagreed with raffles taking place, just the number and standard of prizes. One or three really good prizes and then about 15 smaller ones would be enough. If time was at a premium, as it usually is, the numbers could be drawn by any independent person during play and listed for viewing before people leave. If any are not claimed, a re-draw could take place in a few minutes.
As I have said, it just needlessly prolongs at already long day.
45 minutes for this one forced myself and I am sure many others to leave instead of staying for this exciting final.

I agree with Pete Farrelly, in that a raffle is a useful method of raising revenue for the tournament which would have to be raised in another way if no raffle were held, but it shouldn’t be allowed to impinge on the progress of the tournament itself.
One point concerning when the prize draw takes place. I’ve always felt that it makes sense to do it between the last 16 and the quarter finals. Playing formats mean that this is the point in the day when winning players cease to have a break before their next match, so the raffle draw provides a natural gap of a few minutes before the remaining 8 players enter the final stages of the tournament.
But I do feel that the raffle draw should only be a few minutes in duration. Open tournament days are quite long enough already (through necessity), and we shouldn’t extend them any more than we have to.
