Berks next!
I have asked the organisers to email an entry form for the site, but none has been forthcoming.
Has anyone got one they can scan?

Strangely enough I (and many others) have had an entries reminder email from Dave Alder this evening.
I have replied to the effect that the form has only gone on the AEBBA site today.

The draw has been made and I received it for my input THIS MORNING without any mention of how many tables they had (which makes it a bit difficult). It will be available WHEN I have time to sort it out. In the meantime, you have two options. Wait for me to find some of my precious time between dates to sort it, or find another mug to do it.
How about it Mark, you are always the one hassling me to do it.
Your flaming choice!

what is this about hassling i only ask :-X :-X :-X :-X Seems like you are not allowed to ask a simple question now eh Mark ;) Considering Berks is only a week away I wouldn't call it "hassling" to ask simply if the draw has been done or if it is on its way. Sadly there isn't enough Berks interest on this forum to guarantee we are going to get the draw early enough to do the tipsters and more importantly get the start times so we can all sort out our travel arrangements (especially if you are as far away as the Kent boys). No one is being got at here, I understand that for some events we are going to get the info later, but this forum is a great way of keeping us all in the loop. I look forward to seeing the draw on here soon, and see you all in Reading next weekend.

Hear hear..... and well said Nigel! ;) As somebody who has to plan child-free weekends and will have to book a dog-sitter for the day in advance, it would be nice to have as much notice as possible! I appreciate that we are all busy in life, so maybe the closing dates for the Opens should be earlier to enable to draw to be known in plenty of time? I wouldn't have thought that one week earlier wouldn't make much difference to the number of entries, but would probably be a big help for the organisers to arrange things. Just a thought.......

Nobody is having a 'go' at you Pete, simply asking the question.
If you need to 'have a go' back at someone I would suggest that you make your target the person who has given you late information.
TAKE A CHILL PILL ;) ;)

you get yerself into trouble ! we only ask because we need to make arrangements as BBWARRIOR said - dogminders/childminders etc
we understand with your hectic social and work life it's tough but if you accept these responsibilites you accept the grief that goes with it ?
p.s. we DO appreciate everything you do, though we may not say it sometimes cos you're too busy getting into trouble ! ;)

This is not aimed at anyone in particular, but when is Pete going to be cut some slack ? He is an unpaid volunteer and does not deserve this.
It is unfortunate that the Berks is a week earlier this year (last year it was on the 16th Sept, this year it's on the 7th) - so there's less time to play with.
Bernie touched on the cause and effect of any so-called delay - the obligation is on the County organising each particular Open to communicate with the competitors to make sure they know start times and how to get to the venue: when I entered the Kent Classic for the first time I received a map from Pete Sainsbury, and likewise Mary Daniels did the same for me for the Wessex (Portsmouth).
Please don't antagonise Pete, we've already asked him to work out our schedule for the Surrey Open next May, and want the event to run smoothly. We will be extending him the courtesy of offering him adequate time to work it all out - that is providing he's still around then and hasn't thrown his lot in with what is becoming an increasingly thankless task.

The person who asked the question initially does not have such problems as far as I know. Frankly, although the Tipsters was (like a lot of things) MY original idea, that is not my priority at the moment. I empathise with people who have genuine arrangements to make, but it is simply not the fault of ANYBODY who uses this forum. The draw is made, but the times and tables will NOT be available until Monday, possibly even Tuesday or Wednesday as I have a match on Monday and a date on Tuesday. Work does get in the way for most of us too.
So, sorry if my forthrightness does not suit all, but I have never been one to suffer fools gladly as you all know.
The conclusion to this is that I will continue (for the moment) doing any open schedule that I am requested to do, with the following provisos which may increase when thought can be put into it.
The organiser MUST:
(1) let me know the date of the draw in advance so that we can agree when it will be available to me, so that I can confirm it will give me enough time
(2) let me know how many tables will be used and what time you wish to start
(3) let me know if there is any preference as to when two-leg matches will start in the Plate
(4) disclose the counties of most players. You have to understand that I am likely to miss many Opens from now on and will therefore lose touch with who is who.
(5) give me a bit of slack as my friend Clive puts it
More conditions will follow.
Note that, if I had not been typing this now, it may even have been halfway done.

My comments were certainly not aimed at Pete...... I have nothing but respect for anybody who gives their time free of charge to help arrange the Tournaments and update the websites. 8-) ;) However, I do feel that the organisers of this event should have made the closing date earlier than 2 weeks before the day to allow sufficient time for the draw to be sent out before now. >:( The closing date for most of the Tournaments so far this year was 3 weeks before...... meaning that the information was available here usually 10-14 days before the day, therefore giving the people that have to arrange dog / child minders enough time to organise these. So keep up the good work Pete, we DO appreciate the work that you do - even if it may seem sometimes that we don't show it! :-[

Thanks Dave, But you've been a bit mischievous by being selective with your quote on my post which looks out of context. Can you not do that, please ? Here is the missing bit: It is unfortunate that the Berks is a week earlier this year (last year it was on the 16th Sept, this year it's on the 7th) - so there's less time to play with. I would rather people looked at this bit, where I have tried to delve into the problem, rather than my rather futile attempt to come to Pete's aid.

Sorry Tommo..... no mischief intended.
I was simply pointing out that it was the organisers that were the cause of the delay - not Pete...... and since most of your post was in his defence, I used the part that related to him.
I will remember to either quote in full..... or not at all..... in future.

Not really the point I was making Dave. ::) It is definitely okay to quote parts of a text and I wouldn't what you to limit yourself in such a way from now on.
Half of my post was of a similar theme to the one you followed up with (on shortcomings in organisation by certain (not all) counties), and that was the part I would have preferred you to have quoted me on: you were more or less saying the same thing as me, and it came across that the idea was all of your own invention ! ;D

Just a thought....... I think that you will find that I had already made the point that the organisers should have made the closing date earlier in my previous message...... especially if the date for the Tournament is a week earlier than the previous year!! >:( [Edit - Quote fixed - Sav]

I think that you will find that I had already made the point that the organisers should have made the closing date earlier in my previous message...... especially if the date for the Tournament is a week earlier than the previous year!! >:( Ok, now a theme we can develop on. I'm with you on this one, if you were to believe it. So just how do you propose to enforce that on counties that are spread far and wide? How many times does the number of entries fall short of the mark, and the closing date is then extended ? Some counties are considerably better at publicising their Opens than others. I would like to see the following, in turn: 1. Entry forms going up on the AEBBA website earlier; 2. More advance publicity (not only on the Forum but elsewhere) to gain sufficient entries (especially where a limit has not been set in advance); 3. Better timing after the close date, as BB Warrior requests. 4. Initial notification of the Draw on here as soon as possible after it's been made - to allow sufficient notice for the competitors. 5. Then and only then, the schedule with times. This latest Open will give less than a week's notice of timings - unfortunate for those who have to make special arrangements, or could find themselves stuck for transport unless things are made clear. But maybe I'm missing the obvious here? Surely an individual could contact the 'scheduler' by Private Message and request a particular time slot if the circumstances warranted it ? Isn't that the whole idea behind someone working out the times - so that those with the longest journeys are allowed an extra bit of time to get there ?

I agree with you 100% Tommo...... but as you say, how could it be enforced?
Most of the counties seem pretty good at making entry forms available to be put on the AEBBA site, but on this occasion the only reason that Sav got a form to put on there was because Colleen e-mailed him a copy of our Entry Form when he posted the initial message here - less than 2 weeks before the closing date for entries.....!! >:( :P
Unfortunately, this makes things more difficult for everybody, the players can't make their travel arrangements (and sort things out at home) easily and it makes it much harder for people like Pete who give their time to schedule the matches.
Very frustrating for everybody! >:( :-X

I agree with you 100% Tommo...... but as you say, how could it be enforced? The answer sadly is, it can't be. Although the Opens are officially endorsed by the AEBBA, they leave them to the individual counties to run. The only opportunity to get a point across that will be acted on is to put something before the AGM in November: It's less than satisfactory. Those other counties who run their Opens efficiently are being let down by the odd one or two who don't.

Hi all, Firstly anyone who organises times etc voluntarily deserves our thanks.
However just a thought but if a list of opens & dates are already listed in advance on the AEBBA website, could a standard form not be used for all the opens?
Then all you would need to do is add a closing date, contact name, number & address for the person dealing with each individual open so people know who and where to send their entry in to.
Then, maybe a list for each open added to the website, which can be updated by the people nominated to receive the forms for each of the opens, showing the people that have entered and paid.
This would help: • To ensure that forms & Cheques have been received and not gone astray in the post. • To arrange transport as they will know who is going in their area • And as it will be fully visible, could be used as a reminder for people that know that their friend Joe Bloggs was going to enter but his name is not on the list, so the next time he sees him he could remind him and might help boost attendance.
The above is only a thought and is suggested not knowing what resources or effort would be needed by people to implement it.
Thanks

Good idea in principle John, the problem is every county is an island.
Re Berks, I never received an entry form as AEBBA webmaster despite asking at Kent, It was only through getting a copy scanned from BBWarrior that we ever got it onto the site. That was two weeks before closing and far too late.

I knew nothing about it until after she had done it! ;) One thing that really puzzles me about this........ were the entry forms for Berkshire Open not supposed to be sent to the same person who is shown on the AEBBA website as Secretary? Surely he must have had a spare entry form........ ??? ::) Seems a bit like the left and right hands aren't talking to each other there! :-X

So if we used a single form that can be downloaded, filled in and sent through to the organiser of the open you wish to enter. it should do away with waiting for the organisers to send it through so for example:
I would look and see what competitions are coming up on the AEBBA website and decide what ones i want to go in for, lets say kent Open & Sussex Open
then I download the standard form from the AEBBA, fill it in then send through to the Kent organiser who's contact details and address would be listed on the AEBBA website.
Then i download the same form, fill it in and send through to the Sussex organiser, whos details are also listed
Sorry if i have repeated myself in any of this, i have trouble putting my thoughts into words
Thanks

Tell me if im wrong but surely if a county wants to run an open its down to them to run it and make it work. Dates are usually known months in advance and it just takes a bit of effort to do the entry form and get it distibuted at opens, aebba site e-mails and on the tournaments page on here.
Having taken over the Sussex Open with Nigel last year i know that some effort has to go into it but we knew that when we took it on.
We also wrote our own formats and times etc as i thought this was what happened. I didnt realise at the time that Pete did most of the formats for the other opens. To be honest surely this is a safer bet as who knows what may happen and the various reasons why someone may suddenly be unable to do them.
The date of next years open is set and i know the forms will start going out in Feb at the Oxford open starting the distribution 4 months before it.
Just a bit of forward planning is needed by Counties if they want to make their open a success and keep it running.

First of all "Hi" to all my fans.
Secondly, I have only been at home for a few minutes this entire weekend, and just got home after a very long drive from Gateshead. I now find I am the subject of another "ban threat" without initially understanding why, as there is no detail in the threat which would explain. Another email to me has enlightened me, thankfully, that by using the phrase "suffering fools gladly" implies/infers that Mark is a fool. This is a well known phrase which totally describes my attitude to life in general as most of you will know.
If it was taken any other way, it should not have been misunderstood, but I totally withdraw it and apologise. I will however just request that people wait for any Open draw and times to be issued without continually asking the same question each time. When I do a schedule, it is published as soon as it is available. Ask anyone, and I do not need badgering, especially when time is so precious.
This particular one is VERY late being issued to me. It is also difficult for me not to reply to the question because Dave Alder does not use the forum. So, if I had not done so, who would?
Despite my objections to the threat, I WILL wholeheartedly accept my punishment like a man and not log on until next Sunday at the earliest.
The only problem now being, when will the forum users learn their times? So, it seems the initial question has now had the exact opposite affect to what it was trying to do, apart from also taking that extra bit of time fielding this flak.
Anyway, I have taken a very brief look at the draw and it seems that there are very few 1st matches not including either a Kent or Sussex player.
As Dave has opted for a 10.30 start, if nothing else is heard from him, the players from these counties will not be playing before 11.15, but that is the best I can say.
But no volunteers to take over these tasks yet?

Reading through the posts here, I can see no mention of a "ban threat"........ most of the comments seem to be thanking Pete for his work and stating that the organisers seem to be making his job harder than usual on this occasion. ::)
However, it would seem that Pete is unable to provide the draw or start times here to enable people to make any arrangements for travelling etc this weekend....... >:( >:( :-X
I have e-mailed Dave Alder this morning asking him to send me any information that he can and will follow that up with a phone call later if he doesn't reply.
I will post up any information that he sends me that may help other people.
