I heard recently that there are half a dozen or so Bar Billiard tables in pubs in London. At the moment, the pubs and locations are unknown, but my source is going to find out. Apparently they are 10 minute clocks so people can have games during their lunch breaks! ;D Apparently it is becoming quite popular :o Will let you know more when i do :D

Don't you think you are being just a little bit naughty, lumping all Londoners together so unfairly like that, you whiskey-swigging, Celtic-loving, bagpipe-swinging old Jock you!

I recall there was reference to a Bedford Tavern, quite near to Crystal Palace football club. We did have plans to check it out, but then arrangements fell through.

Hello there,
Sorry to bother y'all, but I'm researching a potential feature on bar billiards for Time Out London magazine. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with information on London pubs that hold bar billiards tournaments, prominent London bar billiards players or just anyone I can talk to about the sport. Ideally we're looking to document a tournament/competition, including interviews with the player and a history of the game, but it has to be happening in London.
Thanks in anticipation

I don't think there is any BB played in London itself, there maybe tables in pubs still but have never looked for them. High Wycombe and Tunbridge Wells are maybe the nearest leagues.
Pete Sainsbury or Dave May could possibly give you some info.
Someone else may know of local tables in London.

Hi and welcome. You may expect a wealth of information to come forth following your enquiry, and I'll start the ball rolling by entering the following link into an overview history of bar billiards : www.tradgames.org.uk/locations/Bar-Billiards.htmLondon rather strangely appears to be a no-go area as regards bar billiards ! This is all the more strange when you consider that the original table manufacturer - William Jelkes & Sons of Holloway Road - were based in London. Though no longer trading, tables made by Jelkes in the 1930s continue to be popular and many have been fully restored to their original condition after a colourful history over the last 70 years in the pubs, inns and taverns across the British Isles. Maybe it's because people have to be able to get around really quickly to meet up to play matches and the M25 is seen as the border for which this is possible. Tables do however exist within the circle of the M25 - I have played on tables in Raynes Park and Tooting, and also a league match at the Emma Hamilton (Wimbledon Chase) - though I doubt if those particular tables are still there now !

Hi David , As far as I know there are no tournaments held in London but there are a number of pubs with tables if you can find them . Try a search for Bar Billiards on www,beerintheevening.com and you should find some .

I thought the "London game" was slightly different to the version we play with the pegs in front of the 50 holes and the 200.
Alec Hastings from Redhill told me once he used to play this version regularly and with the longer games (not sure how long) once score over 25,000

Great link provided by Mark Senior, very instructive.
It seems that London is spoilt for choice, with tables existing in Brentford, Walton-on-Thames, Twickenham, Chelsea, Teddington, Thames Ditton, Richmond and Deptford.
Whereas the nearest location to London where the game is played competitively is of course Redhill and Reigate.

The pub that was used as the 'local' in the first 2 series of 'Hustle' on BBC had a bar billiards table. This was set in London, not too far from the London Eye I think. It seemed to be the same type as we are used to rather than the London equivalent with the 4 pegs in front of the holes.

There is, of course, the City Bar Billiards League in Rochester - just under an hour from London. I've seen a table in Sidcup a few years ago but the Medway League is possibly closest.

As you can tell from the above - there are tables dotted all around London. I tried to find out about competitions and leagues years ago - and there were none. There was the odd pub who used to play friendlies - but that was all.
I started playing Bar Billiards at the Emma Hamilton in Wimbledon a good few years ago. We had a young eager team and decided to stage a 24 hour bar billiard competition. We tried very hard to get other pubs in London involved - and there was no interest whatsoever. Things might be different now though!
As a previous All England Ladies champion who used to live and still works in London, I really must say that the Redhill and Reigate leage is without doubt the nearest league to London. When I played for the pub in Wimbledon we played in that leage for years - and entered all the competitions we could!
If you need any info or help I can put you in touch with lots of people from that league - please leave a reply to this and I will get in touch with you privately. Speaking for everybody on this board - we would be most interested in helping out with your article and would be keen to see a copy of the finished product!!
Many thanks and I hope you get the info you need.

Just to make you all aware, I am meeting up with David - hopefully next week. If you are interested in meeting up with him as well then please either reply directly to this or you can e-mail me/personal message me.
He is thinking of changing the article to the decline of pub sports in London and maybe what the Landlords/customers can do to remedy it. There have been lots of opinions on here of late - anybody willing to come and talk?!!!
The more people that meet with him and the more information we give him (obviously all interesting ;)!) then the bigger and better the article will be.
Any and all publicity for Bar Billiards is helpful. Anybody interested in joining us?

As I'm one of your Tuesday-night team-mates I'm obviously up for it. Will it be East Surrey or South-West London ? Can't make it next Tues (25th) though as Margo and I have a Mixed Doubles Semi to play.
