Pictured below is an advert that I am placing in Cornish newspapers on 6th December. You never know, I might get a response ;D and before any wiseguys point it out.... I have put my phone number on the ad, just blocked it out for web safety.

I hope it turns up some interesting responses.
Apart from wanting you personally to remain in the game, it is in all our interests to see a Cornish League:
It would encourage "infill" from Portsmouth across the South coast counties of Devon and Dorset and help to make our game more widespread again :)
The idea of a Cornish open is very appealing too 8-)

Hi Bernie
Glad to hear that the "Wild West" is treating you well and hope you get some responses to your ad.... there have to be some more bar billiards exiles living down your way!
Ros's idea of holding a Cornish Open would be great, it's a lovely part of the world and I usually take the kids down for a holiday near St Ives in the summer, so if you have found a friendly pub (or 2!) it would be great to meet up....
I'm still grateful for the fact that you had to pull out of the Mid-Sussex Doubles last year, Colin Mansfield and I went on to win it (thanks to a lot of good luck combined with the occasional good shot!) and we start our defence of the title in a couple of weeks time.
Save a warm pasty for me. :-)

Well Tommo, I did say that we had good luck on the way to winning it last year.... although if we are going to defend our title successfully this season then we will probably have to rely more on good shots, rather than luck! ;) ;D
I doubt if we will get Colin involved on here, he doesn't usually even reply (or read!) e-mails that are sent to him.... ::) but one of the other players (Giles) at the White Horse said he was probably going to sign on here because he had enjoyed having a look at the site after I had told him about it. ;)
So, we could soon be getting reports about their matches.... and of course the lovely table down there.....!! :)

I've had a text from a guy called Roger Hook down this way who "used to play league 70's - 90's" I haven't managed to speak to him as yet but has anyone heard of him?

Had my first game in my new adopted country ;) last night, met up with Roger (see above) and made our way to The Cornish Inn at Gunnislake (thank you Ros for some excellent Googling).
Lovely pub, ex coaching inn, great landlord (and son) who were very keen to see the table get some use.
Initial impression was good, its a Riley with superb baize, couple of pockets very slightly proud of the playing surface but not bad enough to affect play, 'D' is marked rather than stuck on, and no spots at all, just marks where the pegs and red ball should go.
Rolled some balls up and thats where the problem started, everything went to the top right corner.... BADLY, closer inspection showed that the right rear foot had pulled out, as had the mounting for it. Landlords son, David rushed off and brought back screws, screwdriver and spirit level.
Refixed the foot and placed the level on the table, downhill with a capital D, adjusted feet to their max/min, releveled and STILL very downhill, I then placed the level on the floor...... it is the floor thats downhill, and some.
Ended up with about 2" of wood under the rear right leg and finally got some sort of level, slightly uphill and an even 'splay' rolling to the 30's.
Now to play.... red spot/mark is a long way forward making the break impossible, brought the red ball back about 2" and the break is perfect, no side needed. The only thing we didn't have on the night was a measuring implement to check where the spot should be, will correct that one next week.
Landlord then came over with 2x£1 coins for our use as a thank you, and then gave us the next round of drinks on the house ;D
He also believes that a league still exists in Cornwall, around Launceston area :o :o he is going to have a few words around the trade to find out more info.
All in all a very successful evening and a pub for you all to try the next time you're down this way.

Well done Q, Glad to see you are still determined to fight the cause of getting the game played out West. The brother of a chap I work with has recently acquired a big hotel in Lincs (near Skegness) and has plans to buy more than one table (he has loads of room) and start the game off in that area. So with those two on the horizon, as well as Sudbury (Suffolk) plans to expand the known bar billiards world are beginning to look rosy. :)

That's wonderful news Bernie, sounds like a good evening after the kinks were ironed out :) Even better that there may still be a league, although I would have thought someone would have responded to your advert if that was so. Where does Roger come from? I asked Pam on Weds, she says she can remember the name Hook, but wasn't sure of a christian name.

Went back to the Cornish Inn tonight armed with D and spots (thanks Sparky) and measuring implement....
distance between D spot and the mark where the red spot should be was 11 inches :o We placed a spot at around the 7 inch mark and the break is great (for me) with a bit of left, table is still uphill, I've adjusted it again but its really the pub floor that needs adjusting ;D
With a bit of TLC it could be a VERY good, high scoring top.
Thats one table, we've another to check out but we still need a few more to make a league ;)

Good start though Bernie, and at least you have found a pub that sems to have a genuine interest, and with a second to look at, from small acorns can great oaks grow. As said in an earlier post bet the smile is very wide.

Just *bumping* this one to tell everyone that if they should be holidaying in Cornwall or Devon they should pop in to The Cornish Inn at Gunnislake www.thecornishinn.co.uk/Wednesday is a bad night, they have a quiz or bingo most weeks, Thursday would be your BEST night, cos every week around 20:30 Roger & myself are there playing Bar Billiards and we'd love to have some fresh competition.

Had word of a new table in Cornwall... ;D Whilst we were all in Jersey my playing partner took a trip to Tintagel (he had been told of a new table), he eventually found it in the Tintagel Arms, www.tintagelarms.co.uk/ went in with his son to try it out and in his own words "it is total cr@p", from how he described it it sounds like a Supreme ::) but the company who installed it obviously know NOTHING about our sport... It has no baulk lines, no 'D', no spots at all and to say that it wasn't level would be a gross understatement. They had supplied 4 pegs, 2 white, 1 black & 1 red but hadn't told the landlord where they should be placed :-/ the 200 shot is impossible from either side of the table due to restriction of room. Roger left feeling VERY underwhelmed, I may pop over myself at some stage & see if anything can be done to make it playable (and check wether it is a 'narrow' or normal top) but it doesn't sound very good so far :'(

Something like this is and detrimental to our sport. Whoever designed the first Supreme table moulded it in the image of a Pool table, and needs horsewhipping. What the Brewery says goes, and often they have a contractual arrangement with Leisure Group whereby they supply the table to be installed and it turns out to be an unplayable Narrow Sams. This happened at two potential Redhill venues on the outskirts of Crawley - the Hedgehog (Burstow) and the Black Horse (Hookwood). Conditions would have been ideal for League play - apart from the rubbish installed masquerading as a bar billiards table. Any overtures to have the tables replaced with a 'proper' one like a Jelkes fell on deaf ears, plans never came to fruition, and the next thing you know there's no bar billiards there at all and the landlord would not be having anything more to do with it until hell freezes over. It gives bar billiards a bad name.

Latest update from Cornwall.
I missed a table on Ebay today, being sold in Liskeard. I phoned the seller because the photos were VERY poor, requesting a viewing, the only time they could arrange was this morning (Auction finished at 12:09) I just didn't have the time to see it but from her description it sounded like a narrow (even though it was described as a B&W) I wasn't prepared to bid unseen, it went to the only bidder for £450. BUT it has solved the mystery of where the table went from the local pub, The Fountain, this was it. I just hope the buyer is happy and that its not another dealer.
Other news is that a regular at The Cornish Inn was asking me about the possibilty of a Cornish League, how many teams and players we would need, I told him that we would stick to AE rules but the number of players per team would be decided by us, if needed we could have teams of 3 playing twice, he is now making some contacts with ex players & pool players who have shown an interest, we still only have 2 venues BUT we could have 2 teams of 3 at each venue giving us a league of 4 teams... from small acorns etc, and if my search for a table eventually comes off (and I can find a suitable landlord) we could expand, this local is known for fairy stories but it cant hurt to show enthusiasm for his idea ;)

Good luck with your continued search, Q. Gratifying to know that you still miss playing after having been away for - is it three ? - years.
Referring to your earlier post on the Tintagel Arms, my East Grinstead connection has now similarly turned sour............. Had a super day there last week, great pub lunch and Margo loved the table. Only problems the lack of a D and spots. (Just two pencilled marks either side of the 100 and out of position by about an inch). Mentioned it casually to the landlord and promised to come back and sort it out for him (free of charge, of course.)
Went on the bus again today, armed with 'D'-making kit (Duck tape and Compass cutter). Table not working, the electronic timer had packed in. The fruit machines and juke box were being emptied of coins, and the bar billiards too.........The landlady mentioned to the Coin Machines rep that a call had been put out last Thursday to have the timer repaired but had heard nothing since.
I mentioned that I would be more than happy to make a new 'D' for it, and was told by the Coin Machines Rep in no uncertain terms that no-one apart from them was allowed to touch the table. >:(
Their loss, won't be going there again in a hurry, and we had lunch instead in a bistro round the corner. I shall however stick a D and some spare spots in the post to the landlord as it's not his fault - although he had previously given me the impression that it was he who owned the table ! :o
postcript...................Steve King popped into the pub on a recent visit to East Grinstead and found they had got rid of the table.::) Curiously, they featured in the Sunday Mirror last week as 'the pub offering free lunches for customers buying drinks'. :o :o

One of our players is touring around Cornwall and Devon this week, and, following a recommendation, plans to look in on the Cornish Inn at Gunnislake for a couple of games, and hopefully will report back. 8-)
