I checked out the Bull In in Ilchester the other day - I can confirm it still has a table, housed in the skittle alley which is a separate building to the rear. I don't know how well it plays though as I wasn't able to stop there. OB Stayed in the village over the weekend and can confirm the table is still there in the skittles alley, but also didn't get chance to play

Also, the Bear at Holwell went out of business and closed for good in 2012.

Margo and I have just returned from a week's holiday in sunny Somerset, in the course of which we investigated three of the pubs on the list (sorry not more but Wells Cathedral and the Lambretta Museum in Weston-super-mare won out).
First off, can confirm the continued existence of the table in the Seymour Arms, a charming place miles off the beaten track in the hamlet of Witham Friary. The pub (quoting WhatPub) Very friendly locals, and we tried the locally-sourced cider.
The table..... Occupies the room to the right, sharing with table skittles. The pic in the link does not really reveal its shocking condition. Sunken pockets with rips in the cloth, and a D with an enormous crater. The strip of cellophane across the back of baulk (in evidence in the pic) means that every cueball has to be placed in front of the D. But strangely playable with no roll-off. A label states "table maintained by 8 Ball Pool of Bath". I would say Shame on Them, but might not know the full circumstances; our game only lasted 10 minutes but table was on freeplay (the slot never adapted from taking 10pence coin). What I was able to establish was that it gets played regularly for the "House Championship" and has been there "for ever" - probably the sole survivor from when Somerset had a League.

Remaining results from Somerset visit: 2.Queen Victoria, Priddy (between Cheddar and Wells) A charming place, again off the beaten track, high in the hills, but good parking. Sat and ate an excellent pub lunch in the beer garden, under giant gazebo. Asked about bar billiards, pub has changed hands and table was sold by the previous tenants on or around 2007.
Saw the room on the right where it once was: now fully populated with tables for serving food.
3.The Pub at Wanstrow (between Frome and Shepton Mallet) Has had a recent refurbishment and now re-named the King William IV. Fronts onto a busy main road with limited parking, dangerous ! We stopped by for lunch. Extremely tasty and excellent value. Pub is spotless... No bar billiards though, and would you believe it, the table went as recently as a fortnight ago !! It "took up too much space" and only one person ever played it, to whom the pub were happy to sell at a knock-down price. The skittle alley is very popular, though, with 15 teams taking part in an organised league, every game a home fixture.

Postscript: The Shapway Inn (Everscreech) is still open for business following a 2-year closure between 2007 and 2008 (but as far as we know has no bar billiards). On the trail of the East Somerset League, centred around Frome and Shepton Mallet.........
League struggled on after Somerset ceased to be an affiliated county in 1995. Shapway Inn A won many league titles. Teams from the local villages Priddy, Witham Friary, Wanstrow and Bruton also took part. The latest information on the Shapway:

Hi Killing time in Somerset while attending a wedding. Sad to report that the Rudloe Arms while listed on the map has had no table for at least 3 years. It does have several mummified christ sculptures. Off the map it comes.

However no mention can be found on t'internet of the Heart and Compass (Castle Cary)- which appears to have vanished off the face of the earth ! Further research reveals that it became the Two Swans for a while..........however, this sad fate has since befallen it: www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4509449Reason for the interest was that this was the venue for a special Somerset v England XI back in the day, in which cricketers Mike Gatting and Ian Botham were in attendance:

Ship at Portishead still going strong:
This was the base for the lads from Bristol that I met on the ferry for Jersey in 2000. Nice original Jelkes table. My kind of pub.

NB. I have recently discovered the existence of a Wells Snookerette League which would pre-date these - more of that later !

"In search of the former East Somerset League, 1977-1994" Thirty years following the demise of the Wells Snookerette League saw the rise of a flourishing 3-Pin league in the east of the county. The Heart and Compass and the Shapway Inn, mentioned below in the press clippings I have found in Newspaper Archives, represented the county in National competitions, and there was also a momentous occasion in 1984 when a Somerset v England challenge took place with international cricketers Ian Botham and Mike Gatting in attendance (see mention on Page 1). A dissemination of the information below will follow. [/div]

Further research reveals that during the 17-year existence of the East Somerset League, the following 11 venues (and probably a few more) were involved: Shapway Inn, Everscreech White Hart, Castle Cary Heart & Compass, Castle Cary Waggon & Horses, Castle Cary Brook House Inn, Castle Cary Half Moon, Templecombe Bear Inn, Wincanton Sun Inn, Bruton Old Red Lion, Bruton Railway, Bruton Crown, Fivehead
I say "probably a few more" because many of the teams were nicknamed, a la Guernsey (eg Giants, Baulkliners) and Norwich (eg Beyonce, Dad's Army) Leagues. And with one or two exceptions it is not apparent to which venues they belonged ! We have: Thrashers, Specials (Heart & Comp), Gravediggers, Shove H'ers, Hopefuls, Grizzlies (the Bear ?), Waggoners (Waggon & Horses), Sunbeams and Sunfishes (the Sun), Yorkies, Tumblers, Young Ones, Bodysnatchers, Country Boys, Knights and the Barons !
Of these, just two (Old Red Lion and the Crown) are reputed to still have a bar billiards table.
