Hi, first time poster here - be kind! I last played in the Sudbury and district league around 2011/2012 and looking to get back into things again. I note there are spaces for 4 players on the entry form for this, does that mean it's a team tournament or can I just enter as a singles player? Also are the tables all a consistent size or are they a mix? Thanks! Welcome and thanks for your first post. It is an individual event, it just saves paperwork if four people from the same place wish to enter. If you would like to enter just fill in your details and forward it on along with you entry form and you're in. There are 8 tables used on the day and every one is a narrow Sam's. Now may I ask the obvious questions please, where did you used to play and where about are you based now?

Thoroughly enjoyed the short time I had there due to the rail strike. Interesting combination of modes of transport to get there! decidedly rattly old bus from Colchester I got back ok on the final train from London at 1730hrs. Thanks for the welcome as always, hope to see you in March (or possibly November??)
What could possibly be happening in November?

Nope, Manx GP centenary is too big to miss, especially as I plan to make it my final year. Is that because they don't want any early morning calls either

Hi Dave Absolutely great news and thanks for the final update. It is tremendous that such a figure can be raised at one event For such a great cause. As already said what a fantastic tournament of 4 pin play enjoyed by all. A lovely time and I know I can speak for the surrey gang roll on sept and 4x4. Sleezy I will start plugging the Chris Cass 4x4 hopefully tomorrow. No sav this time so no early morning wake up call so bring your alarm clock

John I only remember playing one shot during our doubles triumph, and all I remember is I needed about 100 with the last two balls to win and declared a 240 shot, falling everyone cos I actually got it, after that it's all a blur so you must of done all the scoring. The down side of the Saturday was, not only did you leave the teddy and chocies you won on the raffle at the hall, you also left the beer I'd won and asked you to bring back to bay while I collected the curry, on the upside Mr Haynes had also won beer and remembered to bring it back so we had to help him out and drink it. Gutted that we didn't get the early morning call on Sunday morning.

I thought the final ball situation was the other way around? Jeff just needed to sink the last ball and missed it! Colin got the 200 second attempt. Final was exciting with Colin in front for almost all of two legs, just under 1k in front with about five minutes to go, Jeff put a 1k break together to go 200 in front as the bar dropped (I think as things are a bit hazy!!)
Great weekend as always
As always Sav you are correct, it was me who was a bit hazy, hope you enjoyed the curry

A massive congratulations to Colin Southouse on winning the World four pin beating Jeff Bridges in the closest final ever, it all came down the the last ball of the second leg with Jeff needing the 200 to win while Colin just had to sink the last ball to clinch victory, which he managed on his second attempt. In the plate final Richard Cox outgunned Dave Ritchie.
I have no idea what happened to the Northants lads, they were last seen leaving the Masonic with a mention of hitting the night club, although not sure how Stephen got on as he was carrying a wooden box containing 130 spoons, I will let him explain that.
in the blind doubles on the Friday night sleezy managed to carry me through to the final, which apparently we won, no idea how or even who played on the final.
The Saturday did get off to an exciting start with Sav arranging for us all to get and early morning wake up call by setting off the fire alarms.
I really do have to send out a BIG thank you to Sav, Alan Mee and John Slee who helped tirelessly with the setting up of the tables on the friday, i think Sav spent the best part of 6 hours with his head either in or under the tables, and then helped me Saturday night breaking down the tables, light etc.
also thank you to everyone who took part or just came along to support the event and once again make it a very successful and enjoyable weekend.
Dont forget the 4x4 will take place on the first weekend of September and the date for next years world four pin championships is Saturday 23rd March 2024

A12 was full of road works last week between the M25 and Colchester so it's hit and miss, catch it at the right time and it's OK. for me we always go M25 and up the M11 and then across the A120, normally the only hold up there is at braintree on the Maccy Ds/ KFC roundabout and usually that is only in rush hour time

just a few reminders. Even though parking is still, as far as I know, free, you will need to get a ticket from one of the machines. I believe the tickets are valid for three hours and you don't need one after noon on a Saturday, but please check.
The Masonic Hall will be open from around 9 on the Saturday morning with teas, coffees and breakfast rolls available. Please try to arrive in plenty of time to register and remember the morning session, groups 1-8 starts at 10-30. If you are running late please try to let us know, either on here or by text message to 07896292585, The A12 is was full of roadworks when I travelled on it a couple days ago.
If you are playing in the blind doubles on the Friday we need to start play by 7pm at the latest so please do your best to be there early and by 6-30pm the latest to allow time for the draw etc.
if any of you are around on the Friday day time we will be at the venue from around 10am setting up and as always any help will be gratefully appreciated, or you may wish to stand around and take note of just how many beers are needed to set the weekend up. unfortunately Jim Balchin has already volunteered to be in charge of quality control and check all the beers out.
On a final note, don't forget this is a fun tournament and as always we will be raising money for the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, SARS, so any donations of raffle prizes or items we can auction off will appreciated and please dig deep into your pockets and help us raise as much money as possible. Members from SARS will be around all day and happy to chat and explain in as much detail as you want about the life saving work they do.
See you all in less than a couple of weeks
Dave

Just to let you know that the draw is scheduled to take place next Monday at The White Horse PH in Sudbury from around 7-30pm everyone and anyone is welcome to come along. Either Steve or myself will make sure the draw is posted on here as soon as we possibly can.
please also remember that during the weekend we will be raising money for The Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, so any donations of raffle prizes or things that can be auctioned off will be gratefully received. We are lucky that due to the generous sponsorship from Specflue our events are self funding meaning every penny raised really does go to SARS.
Looking forward to seeing you sll next month.

Just read this post back.... I'm beginning to sound like BBW with my rants, sorry Dave Q, I think that I am (mainly) past "rants" these days.... it's more just "waffle" most of the time, but you may find a few good suggestions hidden among it and I do care about our game! There seems to be lots of waffle going on. As I see it. Finances play a major part in why people don't enter all the opens. Adding in extra competitions for the lesser players may help, but opens are held over one day, usually on 8 tables so there really wouldnt be time to fit in any more than the normal main and plate comps, plus for the very few people who actually organise these events it could turn into a nightmare. To find time to cater for extra formats may mean spreading the tournament over two days and this in turn adds extra expense for players with overnight accommodation required and obviously this may then deter extra players from entering. Re advertising the events, as Curt as already said, sending out personal invitations just doesnt happen, players who want to play in opens already know roughly what dates they take place from past events so just look on here for confirmation. I certainly look and then let players from my area know if there is anything I think would be interesting to them. Most leagues or at least counties have players who use this board, so we would hope they will let other players know the dates, it isn't hard to pop on to the AEBBA site and grab a copy of all the scheduled events and dates and then forward it on. While the AEBBA do their bit for bar billiards it should be promoted more at local level.

OK, I know 4 pin is a totally different game, but here in Suffolk we play our open on a Saturday and we split players into groups of four, top two from each group progress to the main comp while the bottom two go into the plate, this means everyone gets at least 4 games, yes I know in 3 pin you play the best of 2 legs so everyone gets to take part in four legs, but with our format it means you get to play at least 4 different opponents, three in the group stages and then at least one more in the main or plate comp.
May be you could try something similar in 3 pin even if you had to play only one leg and limit each break to a maximum of say 8K during the groups, this should still mean the better player would win but at least the less skilled players would get a chance to have a shot and play different opponent's. I realise that limiting the break to a maximum figure will be frowned on by the top players but surely it would mean the average player may be a little bit more inclined to enter when he knows he is not going to just sit there for the complete leg while watching someone rack up a massive break or even play the table out, you could always revert back to the best of two legs after the group stage and do away with the cap on the break.
As has already been said, some people don't have the time or just don't want to spend hours practicing, and knowing they stand a good chance of being thrashed in an open really doesn't give them the incentive to enter in the first place. Unfortunately there appears to be a massive gap between the top players who have the skill and concentration to stay on the table and hit big breaks and those who are happy with a 2 or 3K break.

Just to add to the list of trophies Steve has mentioned above, Gillian Cass is kindly going to donate a perpetual trophy for the highest single leg score made during the day in memory of our great friend Chris Cass. the single leg score can be made at any stage of the event, ie the league section, or any leg in the main or plate competition including a single leg score in the best of two legs.
