What an amazing day in Southend at the Papillion. Four players from Sudbury made the short-ish trip into Essex, arriving at 11-45 to be greeted by a already busy pub. 15 minutes spent levelling the table and then the fun started. Due to the number of their people wanting to join in it was decided that the best way to make sure that they all got plenty of games was to play doubles, Jeremy and Jeff teamed up to make one pair from Sudbury leaving Brett and myself to make up the second pair. Landlord John then put twenty £1 coins on the table and play started. A record of the scores were kept just incase tommo wanted to see them. As the day progressed the home players certainly got better while we struggled with the effects of alcohol. Pairs changed and some single games were also thrown in and after over 6 hours of playing only Jeff remained undefeated. Our hosts were incredible and made us all so welcome, the fish and chips mid afternoon went down almost aswell as the beer and there is already talk of a return fixture in the near future, possible entries into the world four pin in March and even a chance of a Southend team in the 4x4. We also hope to make our trip to the Papillion an annual event, moving it forward to January or February next year when hopefully the costs for accommodation will be lower.

Next Saturday, the 30th, the Brewery Tap intend to take four players across to the Papillion Pub in Southend which is right on the sea front.
The Papillion is a new venue, they have only had their table for a few weeks and at the moment it doesn't get played too much, mainly because although they have a set rules they don't know the basics of the game.
It is our intentions to give them a bit of support, help and try to teach them what we know about playing the game. OK we know that wont take long to do and obviously we can only really show them how to play 4 pin so if any three pin players fancy a day in Southend please let me know and feel free to come along and join the party.
We feel it is important to try and help them and aim to be there around noon on the Saturday and stay there until early evening.

Yep, I did talk to nigel a few weeks back and he said that he hoped it would be groups. It's just a 1pm start seems late in the day meaning a late finish and that will eat into drinking time

I know a few Suffolk players had thought about entering but the 1pm start has put people off. You are either going to finish very late or it's a straight KO so they could be travelling for hours and get knocked out in the first round and therefore only play one game.
If you could let us know the format it may help to change some people's mind.

I can also confirm that there is still a table in ye olde bell and steelyard in Woodbridge but it totally unplayable, the cloth has more holes and rips in it than my socks. Plus it's another supreme

Here is a brand new one for you guys and gals, only a supreme and set up for four pin. Was hoping to get a narrow Sam's in there but unfortunately the pub is tied to Essex leisure. Only been in a couple of weeks
The Papillion 14-15 Marine Parade, Southend-on-Sea SS1 2EJ
So non league 4 pin or non league 3 pin depending on what you want

So far we have two "away" teams confirmed.
Although it was always our intentions to rename this tournament in honour of Chris, when planning this years event none of believed Chris wouldnt still be with us.
The date of the 3rd of September has now taken on a greater significance for every one as it the very date Chris and Gillian finally tied the knot and therefore their wedding anniversary.
Lets hope we can make the tournament one Chris will be proud of.

Well chalk on the cushion effects the bounce dramatically and chalk on the cue tip helps. Try the break with two whites or a different red and see what happens, also make sure the balls are placed in exactly the same position each shot. It could also be dependent on how much alcohol has been consumed. Northants have some weighted balls so be careful up there 🤣

It is with a truly heavy heart I have to let you know that I received a message from gillian giving me the terrible news that sadly Chris Cass passed away this afternoon. Chris was not only a very close friend of over 40 years but he was also the driving force for the Suffolk Bar Billiards Association and without his dedication there would be no 4 pin open every year or indeed the 4x4 tournament which was all his brain child. The SBBA had aleady taken the decision to rename the 4x4 "The Chris Cass four by four" in honour of all his efforts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Gillian at this time and we will be offering every support we can. Please feel free to post your messages below and I promise I will make sure Gillian has the chance to read each and every one them

I/ we are considering dropping the doubles as we would be allowing 45mins for the 2 doubles in each match and over the course of the day that will add a lot of time to the tournament. Also how would people feel about trying to go for a 10am start?
Btw I did forget to say entry will be £20 per team.

The National 4x4 team event will take place at The Masonic Hall in Sudbury on Saturday 3rd September 2022.
Obviously teams of four playing four pin
We are looking for teams of four players to take part, it is hoped that each match will consist of two doubles games and four singles but that is dependant of the number of teams entering and time constraints as we appreciate some players may want to travel down in the morning and back home after the finish.
The exact format will be decided once we have an idea of the number of teams entering. But we will try to make sure every player gets a few games.
Please can you leave a message below or PM me if you are interested in entering a team into this fun competition
Thanks The Suffolk Bar Billiards Association

Hopefully everyobe enjoyed the day and well done to everyone who took part.
Congratulations to Steve and Lee on winning the main and plate finals.
On a personal note can I please thank Chris Saville Alan Mee John Slee For all your help on the Friday, Saturday and again this morning. I spose I should also mention Jim Balchin who took it apon himself on Friday to sit back and supervise the setting up of the tables while taking on the arduous task of sampling the beers to make sure they were all up to the required standard and then retutnig this morning to make sure what ever beer was left was still drinkable
I did get this message from the SARS rep who was at the hall all afternoon. Comments like this make it all worthwhile and comments like this are a credit to each and everyone of you who took part .
Dave, Clare here from SARS I hope the rest of the afternoon /evening goes well. I have done many fundraising events over the years but I was blown away today . What an incredible crowd of such fantastic people, so friendly, so welcoming, such great entertainment and support of SARS. It was brilliant. Let me know the date for next year, I'm there!🤩😁

Well this time next week it will all be over, we will have a lost an hours sleep and some of us will be back at the venue clearing up.
But just to keep everyone updated, we have had some bad news,
Cathy, our host and main cook has managed to break her wrist. This obviously means cooking food will be problematic.
Our plan is to still have breakfast rolls for sale from early doors until about 11am, from then on Gary from the white horse has agreed to put on a limited delivery service, so you order and pay for your food at the Masonic Hall, Cathy then phones your order through and it will be delivered. Food available will be Chilli and chips £4-50 Small scampi (5 pieces) and chips £5-50 Chicken nuggets and chips £5-50 Sausage bap £3-50 A portion of chips £2-00
We appreciate this is a limited menu but Gary wants to keep it simple so he can get the food delivered quicky as he is also running a busy pub, for those of you who are not playing you do have the option of walking down to the white horse and eating in, where the full pub menu will of course be available. I will get a few of the pubs menus so you can look before walking the couple of hundred yards down to the white horse and I am sure we could phone orders through in advance so you are not waiting too long as the pub does get very busy.
We know this is not ideal but it's the best we can come up with in the time we have
From a committee's point of view we want to do all we can to stop people going into spoons for cheap microwaved food especially after the way they shafted us with our open a few years back.
See you all next weekend
Suffolk BBA

Hi folks With our open, the first ever World Four Pin, just over a week away here are a few notes.
The main differences in our rules. In single leg games the second player has the option to have the balls back for their FIRST break or to continue from where the balls are
A player may only play the same break shot three times in succession and then they must change their break shot, a mirror image shot is fine. If during the break shots the bar drops and the red is therefore not available, the break shot will be considered to be the same if a white ball is potted down the hole where the red had previously been sunk. If a player does play the same break shot four times in a row it will be called a foul and the score accumulated in that break lost.
If a ball comes to rest behind or obsructing the tram lines when viewed from directly above it will be called a foul and the score accumulated in that break will be lost and the ball returned to the tray. If a ball touches or goes over the line formed by the end of the cloth that ball shall be deemed as having crossed the baulk line and removed from play and a foul called with the player losing any points accumulated in that break. In other words a ball may cross the tram lines but must return completely over them, we believe this is fair as there could be times where it is impossible for the scorer to tell if a ball has completely crossed the line while it is moving, especially given the pace some players hit the ball.
Remember, if the red ball is potted then it must be used for the next shot unless the bar has dropped.
Can players drawn in groups 1-8 please be at the venue in plenty of time to register and by 10-15 at the latest ready for a 10-30 start Can players drawn in groups 9-16 please make sure they have registered by 12-45
Cathy will be providing food during the day including I believe breakfast rolls along with tea and coffees. We would ask people to be polite and not bring their own food or drinks into the venue unless they have first spoken to Cathy and gained her permission.
As always we will be holding raffles etc during the day to raise funds for The Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, SARS and any donations of raffle prizes will be gratefully appreciated. Every penny raised will go directly to SARS.
Finally on a down note. Nationally Covid is on the increase big time again and if before the 26th new restrictions, guidelines or rules are put in place we will obviously have to abide by them. We ask all players and spectators to be responsible and respectful of others. Hand sanitizer will be available by each table and throughout the venue. We will leave it up to individual players as to whether or not they shake hands with others and ask people not to be offended if a hand isn't offered before or after a game
See you all in two Saturdays time
Dave

Robert Cook has been forced to drop out of group 8 as as he is starting a new job on that day, becoming a manager in a pub and I have to agree it wouldn't look too good if he failed to turn up on the first day.
If anyone wants to take his place let me know as we will also start asking around some local players.
See you all in three weeks

Has this problem only just started? If so it's worth checking the battery voltage, although it does sound like one of the timing capicitors may have given up.
If the problem has always been there then there is some adjustment on the timer
