not blaming any of the oxford commitee but there r not many entries 4 this years open Hi Sid The Oxford (i.e. City) Committee as such have nothing to do with the organisation of the OXFORDSHIRE Open. It is run by Ray Sturgess specifically and the Oxford shire Bar Billiards Association generally, of which Ray is Secretary. It was his first year doing it and he did an excellent job - all of the 90 or so entries enjoyed the day immensely. Tony

Just a personal comment re: the Oxon Open reduced turnout. From a personal view, so please do not take as any sort of criticism: Last year I entered my first Opens for seven years: The three I chose to enter were all held on Sundays. Perhaps people are otherwise engaged on Saturdays.

Thats fair enough Tommo, the idea of running the Oxon open on the Saturday is that all the other opens are on a sunday, so the people who are unavailable on a Sunday, can play on the Saturday !

I must admit I would rather opens be held on a Saturday, its horrible going home after an open thinking you have work tomorrow rather than a lie in.
As said on another thread I thought the running of the tournament was excellent. Incidently what were the actual numbers who did turnout and how much was it down on previous years? I can't think of a reason for a lower turnout, does anyone have any ideas?

I intend to try and turn out in most of the opens this year and unfortunately from a personal point of view the Oxford being held on a Saturday was not able to enter as this is normally a hard day to get out of working.
Everyone commenting on entries being down, but looking at the results and scores this certainly did not retract from an excellent standard of play, with many high scores.
It certainly will be interesting to see how figures for future opens compare to get an idea wether it a general trend to less entries or just one particular event.

Like BigTj I now have to work (don't laugh) on Saturdays (having just had my overtime restored after having had none for two years). And on Saturday afternoons more often than not I go to a football match. So to play B-b's on a Saturday all-dayer it means a double-sacrifice.
I know exactly what Nigel means about facing work on a Monday morning after a Sunday all-dayer. My feet usually feel like lead at around 10pm Sunday. But there's a simple answer, Nigel - take Monday morning off as a half-day's holiday. ;) I do it on a regular basis.

i think the main reasons entries were down on previous years was the transitional period between kevin and myself. entry forms were late going out(my fault) and the lack of publisity (also my fault) but valuble lessons learnt for future years. we are the only open to be held on a saturday, we do this to enable us to use the tables on sunday for our inter area team competion and keep our running cost down. some people don't like playing two days on the trot.
[edit]Last paragraph removed in fairness to the author of the thread as I had also removed digs from him.

(One like you accused me earlier of dwelling in !)School holidays last for six weeks from mid July to early September (I know 'cos we have to look after the granddaughters for that period.) So any Opens held within that period shouldn't cause a problem for playing on a Sunday. ;)

There are a few from Northants would have liked to have gone to the Oxford Open but it was generally felt it was a bit close to Bournemouth especially with a few of the lads playing in the 7's on the Sunday. Not enough time to build up brownie points with the other half :-/

Distance is also a problem for those of us who live in Kent. A round trip of over 200 miles is a lot to ask of people nowadays, especially if you get a bad draw, and then lose in the first round of the plate competition as well. Some of us from Medway will be at Sussex, and possibly the Mermaid as well. I hope to see you all there.
