Sadly I have heard today of the passing of Ron Child, a true stalwart of Billingshurst Bar Billiards :( Ron was my first opponent when I turned out for The Norfolk @ The Windmill (Three Bees) and we got to play each other many times since, honors even I think! I and I am sure many will miss Ron and pass on condolences to his Family! Ron was a Founder Member and Life-Vice President of the Horsham League, and served as our Chairman for 20 years. This is indeed sad news, we were planning to honour him at this weekend's Jubilee celebration. As Jim says, Ron was a formidable opponent and got to many finals. Apart from that, he was a thoroughly nice guy. He will indeed be missed. Clive and Margo

news indeed and a great pity we won't have the pleasure of his company on our Jubilee day, and hope someone can pass on our condolences to his family and friends, at an appropriate moment, both personally and as current Chairman HDBBL. Graham Sparksman.

With the passing of Ron Child, the game of Bar Billiards has lost a giant. As tommo stated, Ron was one of the Horsham League's founder members. The remarkable thing is that he has played league billiards every year since. He joked recently that he thought he might have set a record for the most league appearances. Considering that for many years he also played in the Billingshurst League, it's quite probable. (Any idea tommo?) I will remember him as a true gentleman, both on the table and round the Committee table. Thoughts go with his family and his team mates at the Windmill.

I can remember Ron coming down to Worthing to play in our Nobby Clark Memorial trophy for many years. Indeed a true gent.
My condolences to his family

he might have set a record for the most league appearances. (Any idea tommo?) Could well be. I remember him playing for the same team (the Green Man) in an unbroken 21-year stint from 1967/68 until the pub closed its doors in 1988, whereupon he played for the Windmill/Three Bees ever since. He also captained Horsham's B Interleague team for many years. Before 1967 I think he was based at the Station, Partridge Green (now the Partridge) and John Turner recalls playing in the team with him at the Bull, Shermanbury in the Billingshurst League. Apart from his tireless committee work, it is also important to remember that he was responsible for helping to raise a lot of money for cancer relief through the Sussex Bar Billiards Charity Association which he ran, along with Mrs Mercer.

I saw Mike and Lynn Lennon this evening and Ron had been diagnosed with terminal cancer about 2 months ago! After some treatment things looked a little more hopeful but alas the demon has taken another from us :(

Well, we gave Ron our final goodbyes today, and his funeral was so well attended some people had to stand in the aisles of the chapel of rest. It seemed the whole village turned out, and amongst the hordes I counted 20 from bar billiards. We took the opportunity to speak to Joan, and told her about the tributes made to Ron at the Horsham Jubilee event last Sunday, and the money raised for St Catherines which would shortly be forthcoming. Joan was impressed and overwhelmed by this. Nice obituary here for Ron (on pages 14 and 15):www.westgrinsteadnews.co.uk/Core/WestGrinstead/UserFiles/Files/Newsletters/Newsletterautumn2011bookmarked.pdf
