This one looks fundamentally sound: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110734237260A sturdy SAMS, I reckon £500 would be a fair price. Of the others displayed on eBay at the moment, the Bishop Auckland one has a broken electronic timer (= nuisance factor) and the Nottingham one is a Supreme (=inferior modern design). You can also see an example of a brand new Supreme being offered at £1,149. (Not to this Forum's taste !) Went for £655.33 after 20 bids.

Not a great deal of equity left in this one, a self-styled 'restoration project' cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300598854493Two knackered legs (one sounds really bad) Some holes still to be replaced (cups provided) The rustiest timer I've ever seen, and it's not the nice standard Brevete (French) make. The table itself is an ancient Padmores (note the holes at the front for the cues to slide in). Probably of East Anglian origin. 34" width makes it a 'narrow' table, suitable really only for 4-Pin. Went for £411 after 25 bids, probably to a professional restorer.

Regrettably another dud: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120776560762SAMS (probably narrow) with catastrophic damage to one corner, which demonstrates perfectly the effect caused when dragging a table across a floor by people who have no knowledge or interest in the game. >:( Went for £420 after 29 bids, a single bidder stealing it at the death, probably a professional restorer.

Well spotted Clive, you could be right on that. Not been much on for a while now aprt from this one which should go for a reasonable price as it's a long way from the epicentre of the game. Still loads of Billard Russe tables in France like this one for £150 if you fancy a long day trip 200 miles from Calais and a bit of work to give narrow Sams config! Sav

Sav Ah yes that's the very same one as in the top of the thread, which I liked at the time and went for £655.33. Same seller, so looks like the buyer reneged on the deal. :o Went this time for just £511 after 6 bids. :o

Good example of a "Supreme", modern make which none of us will touch. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190581584000Early Supremes have MDF base rather than a slate (although more recent ones do). A good traditional table will, if looked after, appreciate in value; these however start at over £1000 and go the other way. A bit like a quality vintage sports car versus a cheap modern-day saloon. ;) Went to a single bid of £545 (the asking price). About half of what the vendor paid for it originally.

Oh yes a vivid memory from some years ago............hope I never have to suffer that again. :'(

Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear - ::) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220872135885Where to start ? Well, firstly it's not a Jelkes, it's a hybrid. The top is a very early Padmores (the four cue inserts are a feature). The base is like nothing I've seen before, but I must say the wood is in very, very good condition, and a good match for the top. It has round 'Jelkes' legs, and a very early Brevete timer, which date it to pre-war - so that part is right. The great shame is that it's a 'Narrow' top, which means it shouldn't be advertised as a 'Traditional Jelkes'. (Note - advertiser has since modified his description - has he read this assessment ?) :o :o And the starting bid price (£600) and Buy-it-now (£1000) are way, way over the top - even for such a rarity. Wonderful piece of furniture, though. ;) And 12 great pictures which you can view in closeup. 8-) Went for £703 to one of two last-minute bids.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ANTIQUES-BAR-BILLIARDS-TABLE-MADE-ALTONA-SUPERB-FREE-UK-DELIVERY-/380377620535?pt=UK_Antiques_AntiqueFurniture_SM&hash=item589045e037Looks nice, Billiard Russe, but don't be deceived - this is Dinky ! 4' x 2' means it's the same dimensions as the Joe Davis novelty tables: everything in miniature. Never seen one on legs before, though - nor one with a timing mechanism. :o :o I like the strategic positioning of the BP and of the balls - to draw attention away from the lack of a ten hole and the 200. ;) Sold for the asking price of £495. :o :o .................................................................................................................................................................................. Now this one is the best Russian Billiards top I've seen, and would give something like a reasonable game as it's 6' x 4'. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290618419527With just 10 minutes to go, I am thinking of putting a bid in for it myself but shall drop out if it goes near the £100 mark. Went for £97.95 after 18 bids. Didn't want it enough !.................................................................................................................................................................................. Caveat emptor on this one: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130588511791From a pub? :o Maybe, in the way that a table skittles lays on a table: It's another miniature (4' x 2') Went for £21 after 3 bids

Wonderful Billard Russe! Never seen a configuration like that before.
The curvatures at the top end of the table and the lugs on the side cushion demonstrate how pinball developed from bagatelle.

Hi folks, Took some time out yesterday, and have returned to find the thread is becoming a bit tangled (my fault in letting it run to several pages).
I intend now to separate into separate threads for :
Jelkes on eBay Rileys on eBay SAMs on eBay Narrow tables on eBay Anything else.
Hopefully we won't get confused then on which ones we're discussing.....

E.A.Clare & Sons (Liverpool) table in reasonable nick: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180793033506#ht_611wt_1187Seems to have more in common with Rileys than anything else, but the Kings Lynn loaction might attract the interest of the Norwich League. This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available. Looks like a private deal was struck on this one.

Another Supreme: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190636891968This one looks like it's coming out of the Horseshoe at Clerkenwell. Went for £510 after 2 bids. Was interested by this question posed by a Doctor Jackson - sounds as if he's an expert! ;D Hi, could you please tell me the name of the manufacturer. The reason I ask is that the traditional sams/jelkes tables are listed as 33.5" X 55-56.5". Sometimes they are thinner 30"X60" and the burrows and watts tables (channel islands) are 34"X69". Your dimensions do not tally with any of these so its confused me a bit. Therefore to know the manufacturer would probably answer this problem for me. Likewise if you could measure from inside the cushion to inside the cusion, that is the accurate width of play area as opposed to the width from outside wood to outside wood. Similarly the length is measured (apparently) from centre cue off starting spot to the outside hole (top left or top right). Most grateful Dr G Jackson

A French table and i can sense Sav's fingers twitching already: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280824819629These are well built - apart from the obvious drawback of the absence of the 200 hole ! Sav has picked up a couple of these at a song directly from France and has sold them on at a good profit after drilling and fitting a hole in the appropriate place. It is unlikely though that this one has passed through Sav's hands as it is still 'missing' a hole. Because of this, the asking price of £700 could be considered optimistic. Developments28/2/12 Two offers declined, but the Buy-it-now has been dropped to £650.

Check out the Tables Ancestry/History sub-boards to answer that one, Graham. Bottom thread relates Sav's experiences in 'upgrading' one to UK use, and there's also a thread near the top with a link to the website of the French manufacturer.

A Supreme from Leeds: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320851379019It has been claimed that some of these play alright, though many were made with an MDF base rather than a slate. Main gripe of bar billiards players is the Pool-style coin slot which you can damage your hand on when picking a ball out of the tray. Went for £421 after 16 bids.

Immaculate Supreme, this time from Kent: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300670822874Seller "Saint2661" - funny, I thought there was only one Saint in Kent: Saint Christopher ! ;D Expect this one to go at around the £700 mark - quite a drop from new. Shame. Note the tiny circular D, encouraging the playing of off-the-spot ! Auction closed early, a single offer secured it for £500.
