Dear all
Now I know that Supreme tables have been slagged off on these pages but that it has been said that the newer ones are 'better' and have a slate bed. I also know about the coin mechanism and it's cosmetic failings etc.
One of our local pubs has got one of these from his machine supplier who bought it and is renting it back to him and the landlord has contacted us as he is interested and keen to get a team in our league. He has asked that we go and give him some advice about the table and set it up so that it is playable etc. etc. All good.
Now, we are certainly not in a position to turn people away (and would never dream of doing so) but what are going to be my chances of getting this table to play to a reasonable standard that won't P. off the rest of the small-but-perfectly-formed league? Will I be able to get it play a break and split that will not be too difficult for inexperienced players?
Any advice/experience/thoughts would be most appreciated. I know it's not ideal but that's the situation and we're stuck with it - if the team gets keen then we may be able to convince the owner to get a proper one in the future, but our expansion possibilities are very limited in our region and we have to make the most of it... It's quite refreshing to have a new site of whatever type it is.
thanks in advance Tony

Beggars can't be choosers in this desperate time for pubs and our game.
If it's like the one down the road from me with a slate bed, you'll be reasonably pleasantly surprised.
Poor quality cloth will make it slow and in severe need of a hot iron. 'D' will need replacing.
Apart from that, with a bit of fiddling of the red spot it will play reasonably well. Just remember the plasters for your knuckle on the coin mech!
Good luck and let us know how you get on
Sav.

It does need a 'D' and proper pegs and cues but we have all these so...I'll let you know. In these days of eclectic tables maybe it's time that the 'distance between spots' rule was relaxed a little to allow us a bit more scope to adjust it beyond present limits! thanks again Tony

Hi Barbelman a mate of mine was playing aunt sally last night in the wychwood league at the Plough Finstock and sent me a picture of what looks like a refurbed Jelkes thats at the pub , never ever realised they had a table but then again they have only just got a sally team back at the Crowns expense, it seems to me that prehaps some of these pubs that have concentrated on food in the past are broadening there horizons in the current economic climate.
Cheers Till

Cheers Till Hi Till Yes the Plough actually play in the Witney league having moved there from the Saddlers at New Yatt when that was turned into a gastropub. The landlords at the plough are brilliant, bought the table from BB ltd and give the team a lot of support. The position by the toilet door is not the best though.... :-/ Table plays quite well too if a little slow. cheers Tony

Also, the table being too close to the side wall aswell which stops you playing shots from the left hand side >:( The reason i will not play there if we are due to be playing them this coming summer league

Gone are the days when we could threaten to chuck a team out if their table was not up to scratch. I'd rather have a table that I had to play standing on my head than not have one at all which would be the alternative at the Plough I'm afraid. There is nowhere else for it to go that fits in with the economics and the lay out of the place, given the type of pub it is. We have a lot of small country pubs in our area (thank goodness) and bar billiard tables are quite dominating in small pubs so unless they generate a lot of customers then they get put where they can....sad but realistic I'm sorry to say. The paucity of tables has meant that we have NO room for expansion unless a pub/club is willing to buy one, so when a pub has bought a table then we have meet them halfway and accept a few minor inconveniences. In reality the Plough table's situation causes very few problems although it obviously did for you.. ??? We have to look at these things from all sides (except the left hand side of course ;D ;D ) cheers Tony PS Money in post today - sorry kept forgetting - did you get Jenny's?

I agree Tony, you have to take what you can these days. I haven't been in the pub but can't the Plough table be slightly turned away from the wall to give a bit more room to play the table from that side, but saying that I'm sure you'll remember the Bell Headington where I first started playing 35 years ago, we had the same situation as the Plough so had to have a tiny cue to play shots from the black peg to the baulk line on the right hand side cushion, plus you had to stand on the grate!! :o
I also didn't know what you meant by "The paucity of tables" as I had never seen the word (paucity) before, so I looked it up and found it meant, fewness, lack of, scarcity. :-[

Site of many a thrashing..... Yes they do have a little cue at the Plough too.... :) It would be difficult to pull the table out any more as it's a through way to the gents and a bit tight at the best of times. The locals, to be fair, are very good and nearly always wait for the right time to go through and most are very interested in the game. The pub table has a lot of 'casual' users and I'm sure we will get another team out of them in time - it just needs someone keen enough to captain them. cheers Tony

I totally understand the situation Tony, please don't take my comments too negatively, just my pesonal opinion! It did cause me problems last year and it was very frustrating for me and because of this i don't want to be in that situation again and maybe say something i would regret later on! So..... playing standing on your head... let me see if i can accomodate you when you visit us this year ;) ;D
